Limitations of quantum tomography in Higgs-boson decays to four leptons

Abstract

We investigate the limitations of the two-qutrit quantum tomography in Higgs-boson decays to four charged leptons. At next-to-leading order, the standard reconstruction can yield an operator that is not positive semidefinite, even when radiatively improved spin-analysing powers are used. We trace this failure to the coherent combination of photon- and Z-mediated contributions to the off-shell dilepton system, whose distinct production and decay structures invalidate the assumed universal decay analysers. Nevertheless, the rank-two angular sector remains accessible and perturbatively stable, enabling a robust lower bound on the squared concurrence, and hence a reliable assessment of entanglement beyond leading order.

Quantum Tomography and Entanglement in Semi-Leptonic $h\to VV^*$ Decays at Higher Orders

Dorival Gonçalves, Ajay Kaladharan, Alberto Navarro

Angular correlations in Higgs decays to electroweak gauge bosons, $h \to ZZ^*, WW^*$, provide a powerful probe of both new physics effects and quantum information observables. We present a systematic study of semi-leptonic Higgs decays $h \to V V^* \to \ell^+\ell^- q\bar{q}$ and $\ell^\pm ν_\ell q\bar{q}'$, including finite final state fermion masses, NLO QCD, and NLO electroweak corrections. We show that finite final state quark masses can induce effects that go beyond the two-qutrit description in more inclusive regimes, while remaining controllable with suitable kinematic selections. QCD corrections lead to modest percent-level shifts, whereas electroweak corrections can significantly modify the angular structure, particularly in the $h\to ZZ^*$ channels. We assess the impact of these effects on the reconstructed density matrix and entanglement measures, finding that, although they modify the angular observables, the semi-leptonic channels are better approximated by a two-qutrit description than the fully leptonic decay $h\to e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$.

Tripartite entanglement in $H \to ZZ,WW$ decays

J. A. Aguilar–Saavedra

The decays of the Higgs boson produce a state in which the spins of the decay products and the orbital angular momentum ($L$) are highly entangled. We obtain the tripartite density operator, as well as reduced operators, for the decay into two weak bosons. For $H \to ZZ$ in the four-lepton final state we also estimate the statistical sensitivity at the Large Hadron Collider and future upgrades, using a binned method to reconstruct the density operators from distributions. With the expected Run 3 data, establishing genuine tripartite entanglement would be possible beyond the $5σ$ level. The violation of Bell inequalities involving the spins of the two weak bosons could also be established beyond the $5σ$ level.

Quantum properties of H → VV*: precise predictions in the SM and sensitivity to new physics

Morgan Del Gratta, F. Fabbri, Priyanka Lamba +2 more

A bstract We study the quantum properties of the Higgs-boson decays into four fermions via two vector bosons ( H → VV * → 4 f ). In particular, we focus on the case of two different-flavour lepton pairs ( H → ZZ * → μ + μ − e + e − ). We compute the quantum-information observables for the corresponding two-qutrit system ( ZZ ) at next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) accuracy in the SM. We find that NLO EW corrections lead to giant (order 1) effects in some specific cases, significantly altering the extraction of observables quantifying the quantum correlations. We identify observables that are robust and can be used to extract reliable information. Finally, we discuss possible new physics (NP) effects, parametrised via an effective-field-theory approach. We show how quantum observables can increase the sensitivity to NP also for the process considered in this study.

Testing Bell inequalities in Higgs boson decays

Alan J. Barr

Higgs boson decays produce pairs of W bosons in a maximally entangled state, the spins of which can be expected to violate Bell inequalities. We show that the spin density matrix of the W± pair may be reconstructed experimentally from the directions of the charged lepton decay products, and from it the expectation values of various Bell operators determined. Numerical simulations of H→WW⁎ decays indicate that violation of a generalised CHSH inequality is unlikely to be measurable, however the CGLMP inequality is near-maximally violated. Experimental Bell tests could be performed at a variety of colliders and in different production channels. If reconstruction effects and backgrounds can be controlled then statistically significant violations could be observable even with datasets comparable to those already collected at the LHC.

Quantum tomography beyond the leading order

J. A. Aguilar–Saavedra

Abstract Quantum tomography, as a tool to probe foundational aspects of quantum mechanics, relies on extracting spin information from angular distributions. This is inherently a leading-order technique, ill-defined when higher-order corrections are significant. For those cases, we propose to treat higher-order corrections as a background, to be modeled and subtracted from data in the same way as other backgrounds are. We illustrate this procedure for Higgs decays $$H \rightarrow ZZ \rightarrow e^+ e^- \mu ^+ \mu ^-$$ H → Z Z → e + e - μ + μ - , which is of high interest for upcoming qutrit entanglement tests at the Large Hadron Collider.
