Abstract

Angular correlations in Higgs decays to electroweak gauge bosons, $h \to ZZ^*, WW^*$, provide a powerful probe of both new physics effects and quantum information observables. We present a systematic study of semi-leptonic Higgs decays $h \to V V^* \to \ell^+\ell^- q\bar{q}$ and $\ell^\pm ν_\ell q\bar{q}'$, including finite final state fermion masses, NLO QCD, and NLO electroweak corrections. We show that finite final state quark masses can induce effects that go beyond the two-qutrit description in more inclusive regimes, while remaining controllable with suitable kinematic selections. QCD corrections lead to modest percent-level shifts, whereas electroweak corrections can significantly modify the angular structure, particularly in the $h\to ZZ^*$ channels. We assess the impact of these effects on the reconstructed density matrix and entanglement measures, finding that, although they modify the angular observables, the semi-leptonic channels are better approximated by a two-qutrit description than the fully leptonic decay $h\to e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$.

Quantum properties of H → VV*: precise predictions in the SM and sensitivity to new physics

Morgan Del Gratta, F. Fabbri, Priyanka Lamba +2 more

A bstract We study the quantum properties of the Higgs-boson decays into four fermions via two vector bosons ( H → VV * → 4 f ). In particular, we focus on the case of two different-flavour lepton pairs ( H → ZZ * → μ + μ − e + e − ). We compute the quantum-information observables for the corresponding two-qutrit system ( ZZ ) at next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) accuracy in the SM. We find that NLO EW corrections lead to giant (order 1) effects in some specific cases, significantly altering the extraction of observables quantifying the quantum correlations. We identify observables that are robust and can be used to extract reliable information. Finally, we discuss possible new physics (NP) effects, parametrised via an effective-field-theory approach. We show how quantum observables can increase the sensitivity to NP also for the process considered in this study.

Next-to-Leading-Order Electroweak Corrections to Quantum Observables in Lepton-Lepton Collisions

Spencer Chang, Thomas Driscoll, Sokratis Trifinopoulos

We study how virtual next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections affect the quantum observables of entanglement and magic in lepton--lepton collisions. Treating the outgoing particles as multi-qudit systems, $\textit{i.e.}$, qubits for spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ fermions and qutrits for massive vector bosons, we compute entanglement entropy and the stabilizer second Rényi entropy for the processes $\ell^+\ell^- \to τ^-τ^+,\, ZZ$ at one-loop accuracy. We show that radiative corrections coherently modify the quantum structure of the final state, shifting regions of maximal entanglement and altering the generated magic relative to leading order. Our results demonstrate that these quantum observables provide novel, precision-sensitive probes of electroweak dynamics at future lepton colliders and open a path toward their use in searches for new physics.

Limitations of quantum tomography in Higgs-boson decays to four leptons

Morgan Del Gratta, Fabio Maltoni B, Davide Pagani +1 more

We investigate the limitations of the two-qutrit quantum tomography in Higgs-boson decays to four charged leptons. At next-to-leading order, the standard reconstruction can yield an operator that is not positive semidefinite, even when radiatively improved spin-analysing powers are used. We trace this failure to the coherent combination of photon- and Z-mediated contributions to the off-shell dilepton system, whose distinct production and decay structures invalidate the assumed universal decay analysers. Nevertheless, the rank-two angular sector remains accessible and perturbatively stable, enabling a robust lower bound on the squared concurrence, and hence a reliable assessment of entanglement beyond leading order.

Tripartite entanglement and Bell non-locality in loop-induced Higgs boson decays

Roberto A. Morales

In this article, we study quantum entanglement properties of the three-body $H\toγl\bar{l}$ decays (for $l=e,μ,τ$) within the context of the Standard Model augmented with CP-violating interactions in the lepton Yukawa sector. Our aim is to elucidate the distribution of entanglement between the final photon, lepton and antilepton across the phase-space. These rare Higgs boson decays occur at 1-loop level, presenting a unique opportunity to scrutinize quantum correlations of fundamental interactions in tripartite systems by computing concurrence measures and investigating Bell non-locality. Moreover, we explore post-decay and autodistillation phenomena. Multipartite entanglement measures have much richer structure than those in the bipartite case, thus deserve more attention in collider phenomenology. In this line, we analyze here novel observables for these three-body Higgs boson decays, which can be extended to other multiparticle systems within the high-energy regime. We found that entanglement manifests among final particles, occasionally achieving a maximally entangled state in specific kinematical configurations. Also, these decay channels are promising for Bell non-locality tests but CP-effects are suppressed by lepton masses in this kind of observables.

Constraining New Physics with $h\rightarrow VV$ Tomography

Matthew Sullivan

The application of quantum information methods to high energy physics has recently been gaining traction. In particular, reconstructing density matrices and measuring entanglement have been investigated for top quark decays and Higgs decays. This paper will further investigate the utility of density matrices for Higgs decays to vector bosons. Imprints of new physics, whether CP-even or CP-odd, in $h \rightarrow VV$ will generally change the spin density matrix, and so the tomographic reconstruction of the density matrix can constrain, or potentially detect, such new physics. New physics, expressed in the language of the Standard Model effective field theory, is analyzed in this framework of quantum tomography. Prospects for $h \rightarrow WW$ are good due to the fully chiral coupling of the $W$ boson to fermions, while $h \rightarrow ZZ$ requires around an order of magnitude more events to reach comparable sensitivity.

Quantum entanglement and Bell inequality violation in semi-leptonic top decays

Tao Han, Matthew Low, Tong Arthur Wu

A bstract Quantum entanglement is a fundamental property of quantum mechanics. Recently, studies have explored entanglement in the $$ t\overline{t} $$ t t ¯ system at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) when both the top quark and anti-top quark decay leptonically. Entanglement is detected via correlations between the polarizations of the top and anti-top and these polarizations are measured through the angles of the decay products of the top and anti-top. In this work, we propose searching for evidence of quantum entanglement in the semi-leptonic decay channel where the final state includes one lepton, one neutrino, two b -flavor tagged jets, and two light jets from the W decay. We find that this channel is both easier to reconstruct and has a larger effective quantity of data than the fully leptonic channel. As a result, the semi-leptonic channel is 60% more sensitive to quantum entanglement and a factor of 3 more sensitive to Bell inequality violation, compared to the leptonic channel. In 139 fb − 1 (3 ab −1 ) of data at the LHC (HL-LHC), it should be feasible to measure entanglement at a precision of ≲ 3% (0 . 7%). Detecting Bell inequality violation, on the other hand, is more challenging. With 300 fb −1 (3 ab −1 ) of integrated luminosity at the LHC Run-3 (HL-LHC), we expect a sensitivity of 1 . 3 σ (4 . 1 σ ). In our study, we utilize a realistic parametric fitting procedure to optimally recover the true angular distributions from detector effects. Compared to unfolding this procedure yields more stable results.
