Tripartite entanglement in $H \to ZZ,WW$ decays

Abstract

The decays of the Higgs boson produce a state in which the spins of the decay products and the orbital angular momentum ($L$) are highly entangled. We obtain the tripartite density operator, as well as reduced operators, for the decay into two weak bosons. For $H \to ZZ$ in the four-lepton final state we also estimate the statistical sensitivity at the Large Hadron Collider and future upgrades, using a binned method to reconstruct the density operators from distributions. With the expected Run 3 data, establishing genuine tripartite entanglement would be possible beyond the $5σ$ level. The violation of Bell inequalities involving the spins of the two weak bosons could also be established beyond the $5σ$ level.

Momentum entanglement at colliders: the $H \to WW,ZZ$ case

J. A. Aguilar-Saavedra

We address momentum entanglement in Higgs decays to weak boson pairs, $H \to WW,ZZ$, by discretising momentum space. The momenta of the two weak bosons are entangled, as well as the degrees of freedom in momentum and spin spaces. For $H \to ZZ$ in the four-lepton final state, we also estimate the statistical sensitivity of entanglement measures at the Large Hadron Collider and future upgrades. The discretisation method introduced here is broadly applicable, offering a framework for studies of momentum entanglement at the energy frontier.

Bell inequalities and quantum entanglement in weak gauge boson production at the LHC and future colliders

Marco E. Fabbrichesi, Roberto Floreanini B, Emidio Gabrielli A +1 more

Abstract Quantum entanglement of weak interaction gauge bosons produced at colliders can be explored by computing the corresponding polarization density matrix. To this end, we consider the Higgs boson decays $$H\rightarrow W W^*$$ H → W W ∗ and $$H\rightarrow Z Z^*$$ H → Z Z ∗ , in which $$W^*$$ W ∗ and $$Z^*$$ Z ∗ are off-shell states, and the WW , WZ and ZZ di-boson production in proton collisions. The polarization density matrix of the di-boson state is determined by the amplitude of the production process and can be experimentally reconstructed from the angular distribution of the momenta of the final states into which the gauge bosons decay. We show that a suitable instance of the Bell inequality is violated in $$H\rightarrow Z Z^*$$ H → Z Z ∗ to a degree that can be tested at the LHC with future data. The same Bell inequality is violated in the production of WW and ZZ boson pairs for invariant masses above 900 GeV and scattering angles close to $$\pi /2$$ π / 2 in the center of mass frame. LHC data in this case are not sufficient to establish the violation of the Bell inequality. We also analyze the prospects for detecting Bell inequality violations in di-boson final states at future $$e^+e^-$$ e + e - and muon colliders. A further observable that provides a lower bound on the amount of polarization entanglement in the di-boson system is computed for each of the examined processes. The analytic expressions for the polarization density matrices are presented in full in an Appendix. We also provide the unitary matrices required in the optimization procedure necessary in testing the Bell inequalities.

Full quantum tomography of top quark decays

J. A. Aguilar–Saavedra

Quantum tomography in high-energy physics processes has usually been restricted to the spin degrees of freedom. We address the case of top quark decays t → W b , in which the orbital angular momentum ( L ) and the spins of W and b are intertwined into a 54-dimensional LWb density operator. The entanglement between L and the W or b spin is large and could be determined for decays of single top quarks produced at the Large Hadron Collider with Run 2 data. With the foreseen statistical and systematic uncertainties, the significance is well above 5 σ from the separability hypothesis for L - W entanglement, and 3.2 σ for L - b . These would be the first entanglement measurements between orbital and spin angular momenta in high-energy physics. Likewise, the genuine tripartite entanglement between L and the two spins could be established with more than 5 σ . The method presented paves the way for similar measurements in other processes.

Testing Bell inequalities in Higgs boson decays

Alan J. Barr

Higgs boson decays produce pairs of W bosons in a maximally entangled state, the spins of which can be expected to violate Bell inequalities. We show that the spin density matrix of the W± pair may be reconstructed experimentally from the directions of the charged lepton decay products, and from it the expectation values of various Bell operators determined. Numerical simulations of H→WW⁎ decays indicate that violation of a generalised CHSH inequality is unlikely to be measurable, however the CGLMP inequality is near-maximally violated. Experimental Bell tests could be performed at a variety of colliders and in different production channels. If reconstruction effects and backgrounds can be controlled then statistically significant violations could be observable even with datasets comparable to those already collected at the LHC.

Measurements of $Z$-boson pair entanglement in decays of Higgs bosons at the ATLAS experiment

G. Aad, Erlend Aakvaag, B. Abbott +97 more

Entanglement is a key property of quantum systems. In this Letter the first measurements of quantum entanglement between spins in pairs of $Z$ bosons are reported, using proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at center-of-mass energies of 13 TeV and 13.6 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector. Measurements of angular observables sensitive to $ZZ^*$ spin-density-matrix elements in the $H\rightarrow ZZ^* \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-\ell^+\ell^-$ process yield coefficients $C_{2,1,2,-1} = -0.71 \pm 0.45$ and $C_{2,2,2,-2}=0.08 \pm 0.44$, consistent with their Standard Model predictions. A complementary hypothesis test using the full angular distribution, and relying on several Standard Model assumptions in the decays, provides substantially higher sensitivity to quantum correlations and disfavors the separable-state hypothesis at a significance of 4.7 standard deviations (expected $4.9\sigma$) relative to the entangled Standard Model hypothesis. These results provide strong evidence of quantum entanglement between massive bosons (spin qutrits) at the electroweak scale.
