Abstract

We report the absolute frequency measurement of the $4s$ $ ^{2}S_{1/2}\leftrightarrow 3d$ $^{2}D_{5/2}$ $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ clock transition with respect to the SI second. To perform this measurement, a link between our laboratory in Innsbruck and the clocks realizing the Coordinated Universal Time at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig was installed and characterized using the Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS. The comparison between our clock and the ones at PTB was done using the Precise Point Positioning technique. After the evaluation of the systematic shifts, the measured transition frequency is 411 042 129 776 401.2$\pm$0.6 Hz with a fractional uncertainty of 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{-15}$. The stability of the clock measurements was also corroborated by comparing two different calcium ion clock experiments, which share the clock laser source at our institute. Furthermore, after careful evaluation of the trap-drive induced ac magnetic fields, we estimate ac Zeeman shifts on the $D_{5/2}$ sublevels and reevaluate the Landé g-factor of the $3d$ $^{2}D_{5/2}$ level to be g$_{5/2}= 1.200329(1)$.

Hertz-level measurement of the 40 Ca + 4s 2S1/2 – 3d 2D5/2 clock transition frequency with respect to the SI second through the Global Positioning System

Yao Huang, Jian Zhong Cao, P. Liu +6 more

We have measured the absolute frequency of a clock transition at the 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}15}$ level with a single, trapped, laser-cooled ${}^{40}$Ca${}^{+}$ ion in a miniature Paul trap. In our measurement, an optical frequency comb is referenced to a hydrogen maser, which is calibrated to the SI second through the Global Positioning System (GPS). By analyzing the experimental data obtained within 32 days of a total averaging time $>$2 $\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}$ 10${}^{6}$ s, the absolute frequency of the ${}^{40}$Ca${}^{+}$ 4$s$ ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$--3$d$ ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{D}_{5/2}$ clock transition is measured as 411 042 129 776 393.0 (1.6) Hz with a fractional uncertainty of 3.9 $\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}$ 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}15}$.

Precision Measurements of the Ba+138 6sS21/2−5dD25/2 Clock Transition

K. J. Arnold, R. Kaewuam, Sapam Ranjita Chanu +3 more

Measurement of the $^{138}{\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$ ${^{2}S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{-}{^{2}D}_{5/2}$ clock transition frequency and ${D}_{5/2}$ Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factor are reported. The clock transition frequency ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{{\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}}=170126432449333.31\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}(0.39{)}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}(0.29{)}_{\mathrm{sys}}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$, is obtained with accuracy limited by the frequency calibration of the maser used as a reference oscillator. The Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factor for the ${^{2}D}_{5/2}$ level is determined to be ${g}_{D}=1.20036739(24)$, which is a 30-fold improvement on previous measurements. The $g$-factor measurements are corrected for an ac-magnetic field from trap-drive-induced currents in the electrodes, and data taken over a range of magnetic fields underscores the importance of accounting for this systematic.

Optical frequency standard based on a single 40Ca+

Kelin Gao

Research on the development of the optical frequency standard based on trapped and cold 40 Ca + with the 4s 2 S 1/2 -3d 2 D 5/2 clock transition at 729 nm is reported. A single calcium ion was trapped and laser cooled in the Paul trap and stay in trap for more than 15 days. The linewidth of a 729 nm laser was reduced to less than 10 Hz by locking to a cavity for longer than 50 hours uninterruptedly. The overall systematic uncertainty of the clock transition has been characterized to be better than 6.5×10 −16 . The absolute frequency of the clock transition was measured at 10 −15 level using an optical frequency comb referenced to a Hydrogen maser, which was calibrated to the SI second through the global positioning system (GPS). The frequency value was 411042129776393.0(1.6) Hz after the correction of the systematic shifts.

The absolute frequency of the 4 2 S 1/2 –3 2 D 5/2 optical clock transition of 40 Ca + ions has been measured for the first time with respect to the Système International (SI) second. A single 40 Ca + ion is laser-cooled in a small ion trap and the transition frequency is measured as the average of two symmetrical Zeeman components. The frequency is determined to be 411 042 129 776 385 (±18) Hz from 48 measurements.

Dual-Platform Precision Measurement of the $3^2D_{5/2}$ to $4^2S_{1/2}$ $g$-Factor Ratio in $^{40}\text{Ca}^+$

Brian J. McMahon, Vikram S. Sandhu, John M. Gray +5 more

We report precision measurements of the ratio of Landé $g$ factors between the $3^2D_{5/2}$ and $4^2S_{1/2}$ states of a single trapped $^{40}\text{Ca}^+$ ion. The measurements are performed in two distinct ion trap apparatus: a cryogenic surface electrode radiofrequency Paul trap and a room-temperature permanent magnet Penning trap. The Penning trap measurements rely on resonant microwave excitation of magnetic sublevels and yield a ratio of $0.599~488~813~3(2)$, which is a more than 40-fold uncertainty reduction compared to previous work. The radiofrequency trap measurements utilize optical electric quadrupole transitions and yield a concurring value of $0.599~488~813(6)$. We estimate that systematic shifts for each system are well below the respective statistical uncertainty.

Measurement of the hyperfine structure of the S1∕2−D5∕2 transition in Ca+43

Jan Benhelm, Gerhard Kirchmair, Umakant D. Rapol +3 more

The hyperfine structure of the $4s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1∕2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}3d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{5∕2}$ quadrupole transition at $729\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ in $^{43}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ has been investigated by laser spectroscopy using a single trapped $^{43}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ ion. We determine the hyperfine structure constants of the metastable level as ${A}_{{D}_{5∕2}}=3.8931(2)\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ and ${B}_{{D}_{5∕2}}=4.241(4)\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$. The isotope shift of the transition with respect to $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ was measured to be ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\mathrm{iso}}^{43,40}=4134.713(5)\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$. We demonstrate the existence of transitions that become independent of the first-order Zeeman shift at nonzero low magnetic fields. These transitions might be better suited for building a frequency standard than the well-known ``clock transitions'' between $m=0$ levels at zero magnetic field.
