Abstract

We study invertible phases protected by non-onsite symmetries carrying nontrivial lattice anomaly indices. While lattice anomalies are usually viewed as obstructions to symmetric short-range-entangled (SRE) states, we show that anomalous lattice symmetries can nevertheless admit invertible phases that are not SRE, and can moreover shift the set of symmetry-compatible invertible phases. In particular, we consider a fermionic $\mathbb Z_4^F$ symmetry in (2+1) dimensions. For an onsite $\mathbb Z_4^F$ symmetry, symmetric invertible phases have integer chiral central charge $c_-\in\mathbb Z$, whereas a non-onsite symmetry with nontrivial lattice anomaly index obstructs all such phases despite having trivial continuum 't Hooft anomaly. We resolve this by constructing an exact exponentially quasi-local $\mathbb Z_4^F$ symmetry of a $p+ip$ superconductor with $c_-=1/2$. We compute its lattice anomaly, and find that the symmetry indeed forbids $c_-\in \mathbb{Z}$ invertible states. The allowed invertible phases are consequently shifted to $c_-\in\mathbb Z+1/2$. By gauging the fermion parity of the $p+ip$ superconductor, one obtains an Ising topological order enriched by a $\mathbb Z_4$ symmetry. We describe the corresponding symmetry structure in terms of a fusion 2-category. We further show that the $p+ip$ state admits an enlarged non-onsite $U(1)^f$ symmetry, providing an analogue of fractional quantum Hall response in an invertible phase. This non-onsite $U(1)^f$ symmetry again forbids Chern insulators carrying $c_-\in\mathbb{Z}$, while being compatible with invertible states with $c_-\in\mathbb{Z}+1/2$. This result motivates a systematic study of new classes of invertible phases and spin liquids enriched by non-onsite symmetries.

Fermionic Anomalies of Finite Symmetries on Lattices

Ameya Chavda, Ryohei Kobayashi

We develop a lattice characterization of fermionic 't Hooft anomalies of finite internal symmetries in one and two spatial dimensions, formulated in terms of obstructions to symmetric short-range-entangled (SRE) states. We consider lattice systems formed by tensor product of onsite fermionic and bosonic local degrees of freedom, and finite internal symmetry given by a central extension $\mathbb Z_2^F\to G_f\to G_b$. We extract a hierarchy of fermionic anomaly indices for a given symmetry operator in both (1+1)D and (2+1)D. In (1+1)D, an exact lattice symmetry is characterized by a pair of cohomological data $(n_2,ν_3)$. For $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb Z_2^F$, we further show that a symmetry with trivial lattice anomaly indices $(n_2,ν_3)$ is onsiteable and hence admits a symmetric SRE state, establishing that these indices faithfully detect the lattice anomaly. Comparing with continuum fermionic QFT, we find that exact lattice symmetries do not realize the additional $H^1(BG_b,\mathbb Z_2)$ anomaly layer in continuum QFT. In particular, for $G_b=\mathbb Z_2$, exact lattice symmetries realize only the even $\mathbb Z_4$ subgroup of the continuum $\mathbb Z_8$ classification. In (2+1)D, we identify three successive anomaly layers of cohomological data $(n_2,n_3,ν_4)$. We show that a nontrivial value of any layer obstructs a symmetric SRE state. For $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb Z_2^F$, it also forbids a symmetric invertible state. We also construct a non-onsite $\mathbb Z_4^F$ lattice symmetry in (2+1)D with nontrivial lattice anomaly index that forbids any symmetric invertible states with $c_-\in\mathbb{Z}$, therefore forbids any invertible states compatible with onsite $\mathbb{Z}_4^F$ symmetry. Our results motivate a systematic study of which continuum anomalies admit exact microscopic lattice realizations.

Non-invertible SPTs: an on-site realization of (1+1)d anomaly-free fusion category symmetry

Meng, Chenqi, Yang, Xinping, Tian Lan +1 more

We investigate (1+1)d symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with fusion category symmetries. We emphasize that the UV description of an anomaly-free fusion category symmetry must include the fiber functor, giving rise to a local symmetry action, a charge category and a trivial phase. We construct an ``onsite'' matrix-product-operator (MPO) version of the Hopf algebra symmetry operators in a lattice model with tensor-product Hilbert space. In particular, we propose a systematic framework for classifying and constructing SPTs with non-invertible symmetries. An SPT phase corresponds to a Q-system in the charge category, such that the Q-system becomes a matrix algebra when the symmetry is forgotten. As an example, we provide an explicit microscopic realization of all three $\mathsf{Rep}^\dagger(D_8)$ SPT phases, including a trivial phase, and further demonstrate the $S_3$-duality among these three SPT phases.

Anomalies of coset non-invertible symmetries

Po-Shen Hsin, Ryohei Kobayashi, Carolyn Zhang

Anomalies of global symmetries provide important information on the quantum dynamics. We show the dynamical constraints can be organized into three classes: genuine anomalies, fractional topological responses, and integer responses that can be realized in symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Coset symmetry can be present in many physical systems including quantum spin liquids, and the coset symmetry can be a non-invertible symmetry. We introduce twists in coset symmetries, which modify the fusion rules and the generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators. We call such coset symmetries twisted coset symmetries, and they are labeled by the quadruple (G,K,\omega_{D+1},\alpha_D) ( G , K , ω D + 1 , α D ) in D D spacetime dimensions where G G is a group and K\subset G K ⊂ G is a discrete subgroup, \omega_{D+1} ω D + 1 is a (D+1) ( D + 1 ) -cocycle for group G G , and \alpha_{D} α D is a D D -cochain for group K K . We present several examples with twisted coset symmetries using lattice models and field theory, including both gapped and gapless systems (such as gapless symmetry-protected topological phases). We investigate the anomalies of general twisted coset symmetry, which presents obstructions to realizing the coset symmetry in (gapped) symmetry-protected topological phases. We show that finite coset symmetry G/K G / K becomes anomalous when G G cannot be expressed as the bicrossed product G=H\Join K G = H ⋈ K , and such anomalous coset symmetry leads to symmetry-enforced gaplessness in generic spacetime dimensions. We illustrate examples of anomalous coset symmetries with A_5/\Z_2 symmetry, with realizations in lattice models.

Anomalies of non-invertible symmetries in (3+1)d

Clay Córdova, Po-Shen Hsin, Carolyn Zhang

Anomalies of global symmetries are important tools for understanding the dynamics of quantum systems. We investigate anomalies of non-invertible symmetries in 3+1d using 4+1d bulk topological quantum field theories given by Abelian two-form gauge theories, with a 0-form permutation symmetry. Gauging the 0-form symmetry gives the 4+1d “inflow” symmetry topological field theory for the non-invertible symmetry. We find a two levels of anomalies: (1) the bulk may fail to have an appropriate set of loop excitations which can condense to trivialize the boundary dynamics, and (2) the “Frobenius-Schur indicator” of the non-invertible symmetry (generalizing the Frobenius-Schur indicator of 1+1d fusion categories) may be incompatible with trivial boundary dynamics. As a consequence we derive conditions for non-invertible symmetries in 3+1d to be compatible with symmetric gapped phases, and invertible gapped phases. Along the way, we see that the defects characterizing \mathbb{Z}_{4} ℤ 4 ordinary symmetry host worldvolume theories with time-reversal symmetry \mathsf{T} 𝖳 obeying the algebra \mathsf{T}^{2}=C 𝖳 2 = C or \mathsf{T}^{2}=(-1)^{F}C, 𝖳 2 = ( − 1 ) F C , with C C a unitary charge conjugation symmetry. We classify the anomalies of this symmetry algebra in 2+1d and further use these ideas to construct 2+1d topological orders with non-invertible time-reversal symmetry that permutes anyons. As a concrete realization of our general discussion, we construct new lattice Hamiltonian models in 3+1d with non-invertible symmetry, and constrain their dynamics.

A Lattice Non-Perturbative Definition of 1+1D Anomaly-Free Chiral Fermions and Bosons

Juven Wang, Xiao-Gang Wen

A non-perturbative lattice regularization of chiral fermions and bosons with anomaly-free symmetry $G$ in 1+1D spacetime is proposed. More precisely, we ask whether there is a local short-range quantum Hamiltonian with a finite Hilbert space for a finite system realizing onsite symmetry $G$ defined on a 1D spatial lattice with continuous time, such that its low energy physics produces a 1+1D anomaly-free chiral matter theory of symmetry $G$? In particular, we show that the 3$_L$-5$_R$-4$_L$-0$_R$ U(1) chiral fermion theory, with two left-moving fermions of charge-3 and 4, and two right-moving fermions of charge-5 and 0 at low energy, can be put on a 1D spatial lattice where the U(1) symmetry is realized as an onsite symmetry, if we include properly designed multi-fermion interactions with intermediate strength. In general, we propose that any 1+1D U(1)-anomaly-free chiral matter theory can be defined as a finite system on a 1D lattice with onsite symmetry by using a quantum Hamiltonian with continuous time, but without suffered from Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem's fermion-doubling, if we include properly-designed interactions between matter fields. We propose how to design such interactions by looking for extra symmetries via bosonization/fermionization. We comment on the new ingredients and the differences of ours compared to Ginsparg-Wilson fermion, Eichten-Preskill, and Chen-Giedt-Poppitz (CGP) models, and suggest modifying CGP model to have successful mirror-decoupling. As an additional remark, we show a topological non-perturbative proof on the equivalence relation between the 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions and the boundary fully gapping rules (e.g. Haldane's stability conditions for Luttinger liquid) of U(1) symmetry. Our proof holds universally independent from Hamiltonian or Lagrangian/path integral formulation of quantum theory.

Anomaly-Free Symmetries with Obstructions to Gauging and Onsiteability

Wilbur E. Shirley, Carolyn Zhang, Wenjie Ji +1 more

We present counterexamples to the lore that symmetries that cannot be gauged or made on site are necessarily anomalous. Specifically, we construct unitary, internal symmetries of two-dimensional lattice models that cannot be consistently coupled to background or dynamical gauge fields or disentangled to a tensor product of on-site operators. These symmetries are nevertheless anomaly-free in the sense that they admit symmetric, gapped Hamiltonians with unique, invertible ground states. We show that symmetries of this kind are characterized by an index [ω]∈H^{2}(G,Q_{+}), where Q_{+} is the multiplicative group of positive rational numbers labeling one-dimensional quantum cellular automata.
