The quantum harmonic oscillator from binary sequences

Abstract

The quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) is normally built on a structure that contains a Hilbert space, ladder operators, and a Born rule. Here we derive it from counting. We adopt three information-theoretic postulates: information is carried by binary sequences of length $n$; only symbol counts, not the sequences themselves, are observable; and the transition measure must account for exactly the $2^n$-configuration capacity of the register. The first two postulates force the counting problem into the Hamming/Delsarte association scheme and endow it with an exact symmetry under relabeling of the two symbols. Given an exchange-symmetric bilinear transition measure we prove a rigidity theorem: relabeling symmetry and normalization together force the alternating sign $(-1)^t$ which drives interference. The variable that carries the sign, i.e. the overlap between input and output sequences, or equivalently their Hamming distance $d_{ab}$, is a hidden quantum number of the transition as a whole, defined only by the two endpoints jointly and unknowable from either alone. Interference thus enters as alternating-sign bookkeeping over a nonlocal, relational variable $d_{ab}$, rather than as a separate dynamical ingredient. This forced weighting makes the transition probability proportional to the square of a Krawtchouk polynomial, whose difference equation has an exactly equally spaced spectrum and which converges to the QHO as $n\to\infty$. At fixed excitation, deviations from the QHO are $\mathcal{O}(1/n)$, and are testable in laboratory realizations of the oscillator, since any real system has finite information capacity. In this framework, interference, quadratic (Born-rule-like) probabilities, and the particle-hole symmetric oscillator spectrum are consequences of counting; only the bilinear form of the measure is assumed (though well motivated) rather than derived.

The Born Rule from Counting

JONATHAN CHARLES DOWNES

The Geometric Block Universe is a single completed geometric structure - a compact curved space carrying fields - in which every history compatible with the laws is present, together with the records that observers hold within it. Nothing in the block evolves. What an observer calls time is a relational ordering of records by internal coordinates, with a geometric direction, the logarithm of total volume, serving as the clock; where that clock stalls, a second clock built from accumulated volume carries the ordering through. Records are stable, mutually exclusive cells of a finite record space, the harmonics of low degree on a three-sphere, and an observer is a body that writes and reads such records. Three things that ordinary quantum mechanics must postulate are absent from this picture. There is no collapse: a measurement selects nothing, because every compatible outcome is already realised and a definite result is definite only relative to the observer's own record. There is no splitting of universes: the histories are labelled components of one structure, the number of them is not a primitive quantity, and nothing multiplies when a record is written. And there is no fundamental probability: the block contains only counts of qualified observer occurrences, and what an observer experiences as chance is self-location - the fraction of its own occurrences that carry a given record. Probability is an emergent appearance, not an ingredient. This paper shows that the quantum weights follow from counting. An earlier rigidity theorem of the programme showed that a positive linear incidence functional invariant under full-carrier heat resolution is proportional to volume, so that normalised incidence equals an inherited geometric density; the Born form of that density was an input, and this paper removes it. Three statements about counting- that the count of occurrences in a set of record points is the integral of a density depending on the amplitude at the point, that one attempt counts one, and that a non-interacting reader's counts cannot depend on a distant preparation, force the density to be the squared amplitude, with presence, unit counting, affinity and Born proportions for every sharp reader as consequences rather than assumptions. The Born weight is the conserved charge of the phase symmetry of each record, exact for the recorder the theory already contains, and its push-forward over states is the uniform reference distribution that earlier readers haad to be given by hand. The affine structure that makes counts quadratic is not free either: it is the positive first-order structure of the clock direction, derived for a clock that is a symmetry, and it survives the de Sitter trajectory the geometry selects with a bounce mixing 1/sinh²(πν) that is the same for every record mode. The recorder is realised on the canonical records of the five-rung carrier as a complete observer: it writes exactly distinguishable records at discrete pointer displacements, samples its pointer at the rate set by the evaluation overlap spectrum, and returns the branch weight with no threshold, no reference population and no preparation law; where the two records are not exactly distinguishable, the deviation from Born proportions is bounded and second order in their overlap. What remains assumed is stated once: that counting is local on the record manifold, that an attempt counts one, the selection of the record space, the standing of the recorder, and the identification of occurrence fraction with first-person credence. An unconditional derivation is not claimed. One consequence differs from quantum mechanics with continuous pointers and is recorded as a candidate signature: a recorded two-branch superposition decoheres, as a function of the write duration, with exact nulls, a partial revival of 21/91 at half the pointer period, full recurrence when the fibre closes, and a residual average coherence of 9/91.

The Quantum Harmonic Oscillator

Alexander Eichler, Oded Zilberberg

Abstract In this chapter, we enter the quantum regime. Following a succinct introduction to the topic, we present the main properties of the quantum harmonic oscillator, such as the ground state energy caused by quantum fluctuations, the harmonic energy spectrum of Fock states, coherent states, the density matrix of mixed states and its time evolution calculated with the von Neumann master equation, and various quantum state representations.

Quantum Symmetry

Ray-Scott Miller

A two-mode quantum harmonic oscillator is reconstructed from the axiom that a single distinction is the primitive degree of freedom. The construction forces an internal reference witness, Euclidean geometry and a positive irrational remainder \(\delta=\sqrt2-1\). The binary count remains \(I=1\), while its complete account retains the identifying relations and succession that the count alone omits. Symmetry conservation and recoverable closure establish persistence, with a next lawful step always available. Circular closure supplies the exact area increment \(g=(\pi-2)/4\). Its accumulation forces escapement: an additional complete unit is admitted with its witness and origin retained. Applying the primitive construction to this unit supplies the joint Archimedes trammel and its three-dimensional family. The completion event fixes the relative phase and recoverable shadow amplitudes. Subsequent comparisons complete the cell account, whose positive irrational remainder \(\Omega=1-\pi/(3\sqrt2)\) permits further admission. Representing complete accumulated area as squared ladder weight uniquely fixes \(w_n^2=(n+1)g\) and the dimensionless action coefficient \(\hbar_*=g\). Source and child quadratures satisfy the canonical relations on a common invariant domain. At escapement, the completed-unit contribution restores the commutator term missing from the source remainder. The Hamiltonian \(\widehat H_{\mathrm{tick}}=(\pi\hbar_*/2)(\widehat n_\alpha+\widehat n_\beta+\mathrm{Id})\) has a complete discrete spectrum; \(\widehat n_i\) counts oscillator occupations. Its unitary evolution reproduces the trammel's quarter-turn, and an explicit Hermite transform supplies the equivalent Schrödinger representation. The geometric birth comparison becomes an entangled source–child state. Its complete amplitudes and retained context recover the producing account. Each finite generated retained history admits a faithful quantum memory representation satisfying structural record coherence with sequential weak value one.

A Finite Address–Born Package over the A₅ Substrate: Regular Capacity, Readout Bits, and Kernel Admission

Masaru Numagaki

This paper constructs a finite role-side readout package over the \(A_{5}\) substrate. It does not claim to derive the general Hilbert-space Born rule, solve the measurement problem, complete Bell/contextuality analysis, or supply quantum gravity. Its aim is more limited and architectural: to isolate the role-side data required by a later Material–Role Separation framework. Starting from the regular address container \({\mathbb{C}}{\lbrack A_{5}\rbrack}\), the paper fixes the irreducible channel labels \({Irr}{(A_{5})}\) and the finite Address–Born channel-capacity measure This is the finite-group Plancherel weight specialized to the \(A_{5}\) address container. Equivalently, \({({\dim\rho})}^{2}\) is the dimension of the \(\rho\)-sector \(V_{\rho} \otimes V_{\rho}^{\ast}\) of the regular address algebra, so \(\mu_{AB}\) is a normalized sector capacity rather than a postulated quadratic law. The terminology “Address–Born” refers only to this square channel accounting induced by regular address capacity. It does not mean that the general Hilbert-space Born rule, has been derived. The latter belongs to a downstream projector/effect readout bridge. The novelty claimed here is therefore not the representation-theoretic formula itself, but its placement inside an \(A_{5}\) readout architecture: regular address accounting, channel weights, binary-icosahedral readout bits, nonnegative observation kernels, signed signal kernels, and localized admission failures are separated and exported as one role-side package. The paper closes four finite role-side statements. First, once the regular address container \({\mathbb{C}}{\lbrack A_{5}\rbrack}\) is adopted, the channel-capacity measure on \({Irr}{(A_{5})}\) is fixed as \({\mu_{AB}{(\rho)}} = {{({\dim\rho})}^{2}/60}\). Second, this measure is a capacity measure over irreducible channels, not an observed probability law by itself. Third, observed probabilities require an admissible setup-dependent kernel \(K_{\Sigma,P}\) satisfying stochasticity, address factorization, symmetry compatibility, finite-protocol origin, and predictive compression. Fourth, the \(2I\) readout bits do not replace the container \({\mathbb{C}}{\lbrack A_{5}\rbrack}\) by \({\mathbb{C}}{\lbrack{2I}\rbrack}\); they enter only as lift-admitted signed-signal labels over the retained \(A_{5}\) channel support. Observation probabilities are not identified with \(\mu_{AB}\) alone. They arise only after admission of a nonnegative setup-dependent kernel, Signed readout data, including the skeleton \({\Phi{(\varepsilon_{sig},s)}} = {\varepsilon_{sig}s}\), are assigned to a signal or contrast layer rather than to the probability kernel. The deliverable is the package \({\mathsf{A}\mathsf{B}}_{Role}\), designed for export to the Hodge–McKay comparison and to the later \({MRS}^{\prime}\) selection grammar.

Quantum Mechanics Is a Shadow

Eric McLean

Quantum Mechanics Is a Shadow The Born Rule, the Observer, and the Fourth Dimension Pentagon Physics Programme Paper 37 A two-page paper deriving the Born rule from geometry, without new postulates beyond the self-referential axiom σ = 1/(1+σ) established in earlier papers in this series. The central observation is that a 3D observer is by definition a hyperplane in ℝ⁴. If the physical state space is four-dimensional, measurement cannot be anything other than projection from ℝ⁴ to ℝ³. This is not an analogy or an assumption. It is what observation means for a 3D being in a 4D state space. The question "why is measurement projection?" has no content. The geometry fixes it entirely. From this, the Born rule follows in three steps. The projection identity |proj(v)|² = 1 − v₄² is Pythagoras, a theorem not a postulate. Gleason's theorem forces the quadratic form as the unique self-consistent probability measure on subspaces of dimension ≥ 3. The spherical symmetry of S³ gives the mean Born probability as exactly 3/4, with 1/4 carried in the inaccessible fourth coordinate. The standard quantum mysteries are consequences of observing a 4D geometry from inside three dimensions. Superposition is a 3D description of a definite 4D vertex whose fourth coordinate is inaccessible. Collapse is not a process; it is a definite vertex touching a hyperplane. Wave-particle duality is the same vertex presenting different projections to differently oriented measurement subspaces. Entanglement is shared structure in the fourth coordinate, locally present in the geometry, non-local only from inside ℝ³. The paper is explicit about what it does not claim. It addresses measurement, not dynamics. Interference and complex phases belong to state evolution, a separate problem. The self-referential axiom replaces the Born postulate one-for-one; the gain is that the axiom generates the 600-cell, the dimensional structure, and the probability rule as theorems, where Born's postulate generates nothing. Bell's theorem rules out local hidden variable theories; v₄ is not a local hidden variable. For entangled pairs the correlation is encoded in joint 4D geometry inaccessible to either 3D observer, placing this framework in the same category as Bohmian mechanics. Multi-particle systems are not addressed. And: removing the paradox is not the same as solving the problem. Superposition and entanglement may carry richer structure than the present geometric framework has yet reached. The 600-cell is derived, not postulated, in the E₈ paper (doi:10.5281/zenodo.18901979). Keywords: Born rule, quantum foundations, measurement problem, projection, fourth dimension, 600-cell, Bell's theorem, hidden variables, Gleason's theorem, Pentagon Physics

Quantum harmonic oscillator and allied topics

Alireza R. Baghai-Wadji

The discussion in this chapter centers around the ideal and perturbed Quantum Harmonic Oscillator (QHO) and allied topics. The QHO is the quantum mechanical counterpart of the classical harmonic oscillator. QHO is a fundamental quantum system with distinctively rich properties. The Hamiltonian operator describing the QHO is Hermitian and consists of a second-order differential operator term and a quadratic term in the position operator.

The quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) is normally built on a structure that contains a Hilbert space, ladder operators, and a Born rule. Here we derive it from counting. We adopt three information-theoretic postulates: information is carried by binary sequences of length nnn; only symbol counts, not the sequences themselves, are observable; and the transition measure must account for exactly the 2n2^n2n-configuration capacity of the register. The first two postulates force the counting problem into the Hamming/Delsarte association scheme and endow it with an exact symmetry under relabeling of the two symbols. Given an exchange-symmetric bilinear transition measure we prove a rigidity theorem: relabeling symmetry and normalization together force the alternating sign (−1)t(-1)^t(−1)t which drives interference. The variable that carries the sign, i.e. the overlap between input and output sequences, or equivalently their Hamming distance dabd_{ab}dab, is a hidden quantum number of the transition as a whole, defined only by the two endpoints jointly and unknowable from either alone. Interference thus enters as alternating-sign bookkeeping over a nonlocal, relational variable dabd_{ab}dab, rather than as a separate dynamical ingredient. This forced weighting makes the transition probability proportional to the square of a Krawtchouk polynomial, whose difference equation has an exactly equally spaced spectrum and which converges to the QHO as n→∞n\to\inftyn→∞. At fixed excitation, deviations from the QHO are O(1/n)\mathcal{O}(1/n)O(1/n), and are testable in laboratory realizations of the oscillator, since any real system has finite information capacity. In this framework, interference, quadratic (Born-rule-like) probabilities, and the particle-hole symmetric oscillator spectrum are consequences of counting; only the bilinear form of the measure is assumed (though well motivated) rather than derived.
