Abstract

We investigate the topological and collective radiative properties of a one-dimensional diatomic chain of identical quantum emitters with alternating spacing, coupled to the electromagnetic vacuum. The system realizes an extended, non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type model with vacuum-mediated long-range interactions and collective dissipation. We focus on the single-excitation manifold, where the dynamics are described by an effective Hamiltonian. For an infinite chain, the complex band structure reveals subradiant modes associated with wave vectors outside the light line, as well as parameter regimes where real-part band crossings occur. The bulk topology is characterized by a complex Berry phase, which remains quantized in the presence of inversion symmetry and a spectral gap. For finite chains, using exact diagonalization, we identify superradiant, subradiant, and edge states with distinct decay rates and spatial profiles. Edge states emerge in the topologically nontrivial regime when a bulk gap in the real part of the energy spectrum is present, while subradiant states exhibit strongly suppressed decay with system-size dependence. Finally, we analyze the far-field radiation patterns associated with different classes of eigenstates and show that the emission characteristics reflect the decay properties, spatial localization, and the parity of the unit-cell amplitudes.

Non-Hermitian Band Topology and Edge States in Atomic Lattices

Wenxuan Xie, John C Schotland

We investigate the band structure and topological phases of one- and two-dimensional bipartite atomic lattices mediated by long-range dissipative radiative coupling. By deriving an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for the single-excitation sector, we demonstrate that the low-energy dynamics of the system are governed by a Dirac equation with a complex Fermi velocity. We analyze the associated topological invariants for both the SSH and honeycomb models, utilizing synthetic gauge fields to break time-reversal symmetry in the latter. Finally, we explicitly verify the non-Hermitian bulk-edge correspondence by deriving analytical solutions for edge states localized at domain boundaries.

Subradiant Emission from Regular Atomic Arrays: Universal Scaling of Decay Rates from the Generalized Bloch Theorem

Yu-Xiang Zhang, Klaus Mølmer

The Hermitian part of the field-mediated dipole-dipole interaction in infinite periodic arrays of two-level atoms yields an energy band of the singly excited states. In this Letter, we show that a dispersion relation, ω_{k}-ω_{k_{ex}}∝(k-k_{ex})^{s}, near the band edge of the infinite system leads to the existence of subradiant states of finite one-dimensional arrays of N atoms with decay rates scaling as N^{-(s+1)}. This explains the recently discovered N^{-3} scaling and it leads to the prediction of power law scaling with higher power for special values of the lattice period. For the quantum optical implementation of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger topological model in a dimerized emitter array, the band gap closing inherent to topological transitions changes the value of s in the dispersion relation and alters the decay rates of the subradiant states by many orders of magnitude.

Quantum light-matter interactions in structured waveguides

Rupak Bag, Dibyendu Roy

We explore special features of quantum light-matter interactions inside structured waveguides due to their finite bandwidth, band edges, and nontrivial topological properties. We model the waveguides as either a tight-binding (TB) chain or a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain. For unstructured waveguides with infinite bandwidth, the transmission and reflection coefficients of a side-coupled two-level emitter (2LE) are the same as the reflection and transmission coefficients of a direct-coupled 2LE. We show that this analogy breaks down for structured waveguides with finite bandwidth due to the appearance of Lamb shift only for the direct-coupled 2LE. We further predict a robust light-emitter coupling at zero collective decay width of a single giant 2LE (with two couplings at different points) near the band edges of the structured waveguides where topological features can be beneficial. Finally, we study single-photon dynamics in a heterojunction of a long TB and short SSH waveguide connected to a 2LE at the SSH end. We show the propagation of a photon from the excited emitter to the TB waveguide only when the SSH waveguide is in the topological phase. Thus, the heterojunction acts as a conditional propagation channel.

Exact analytical edge states in the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

P. A. Grizzi, A. A. Aligia, P. Roura-Bas

We investigate the topology of the different phases of the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (eSSH) model, which includes hopping processes between translationally inequivalent atoms beyond nearest neighbors. Exact analytical expressions for the edge states of a semi-infinite eSSH chain are derived, with wave functions that decay exponentially from the boundary with a unit-cell decay factor z. From the winding number of the bulk Hamiltonian under periodic boundary conditions, we determine the topological phase diagram and establish the bulk-boundary correspondence: changes in the winding number coincide with bulk gap closings and with the condition |z|=1 for the edge-state solutions. For finite chains, we further obtain analytical, approximate expressions for the low-energy edge states, which are shown to be highly accurate.

Topological bound states in interacting Su–Schrieffer–Heeger rings

A M Marques, R G Dias

We study two-particle states in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with periodic boundary conditions and nearest-neighbor (NN) interactions. The system is mapped into a problem of a single particle in a two-dimensional (2D) SSH lattice with potential walls along specific edges. The 2D SSH model has a trivial Chern number but a non-trivial Zak's phase, the one-dimensional (1D) topological invariant, along specific directions of the lattice, which allow for the presence of topological edge states. Using center-of-mass and relative coordinates, we calculate the energy spectrum of these two-body states for strong interactions and find that, aside from the expected appearance of doublon bands, two extra in-gap bands are present. These are identified as bands of topological states localized at the edges of the internal coordinate, the relative distance between the two particles. As such, the topological states reported here are intrinsically many-body in what concerns their real space manifestation, having no counterpart in single-particle states derived from effective models. Finally, we compare the effect of Hubbard interactions with that of NN interactions to show how the presence of the topological bound states is specific to the latter case.

Anomalous topological superradiant phases

You-Qi Lu, Yu-Yu Zhang, Zi-Xiang Hu

We present a novel set of light-matter topology realized by implementing a finite-component quantum Rabi array with a photonic analog of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) configuration. We demonstrate how complex light-matter couplings with species-dependent phases lead to the closure of superradiance-induced band gap in a manner that differs from that in the SSH model. We uncover an topological superradiant phase transition from a normal phase to a topological superradiant electromagnet phase, which is characterized both by a local order parameter and a global topological invariant. Novel superradiance-enhanced edge states emerge with significantly amplified excitations superior to those in topological normal phase. Strikingly, tuning light-atom coupling induces novel topological superradiant electric and magnetic phases, exhibiting chiral edge-mode excitation at opposite boundaries. Our proposed setup offers a tunable platform for topological quantum optics, advancing applications in topological superradiant lasers.
