Abstract

Advanced optical quantum technologies demands high quality quantum light generation at very high rates. Here, we report on a deterministic single-photon source that simultaneously combines high excitation rates with high system efficiency to reach over 500 MHz of in-fibre single-photon flux. The source delivers optical power of over 100 pW, as is measured with an off-the-shelf powermeter, enabling a simple and direct way of determining the single-photon source fiber efficiency.

We realize an ultra-fast source of telecom single photons heralded at MHz-rates by combining a 10-GHz repetition-rate laser with off-the-shelf fiber components and waveguide non-linear stages. Measured 2nd-order autocorrelation functions are the lowest reported to date.

Efficient interfacing of GHz and MHz bandwidth single-photon pulses

Filip Sośnicki, Michał Mikołajczyk, Ali Golestani +2 more

We experimentally demonstrate efficient reduction of heralded telecom single-photon spectral bandwidth by a factor exceeding 220, from 130 GHz to below 550 MHz. The transformation is achieved in an all-fiber setup using dispersive stretching and complex electro-optic phase modulation. The approach is deterministic and results in a 27-fold increase in photon detection probability at the target wavelength. Combined with system transmission of 40% the interface enables increasing the single-photon flux into a spectrally narrowband absorber by a factor of 11. Our approach may enable efficient interfacing matter-based quantum systems with high-rate quantum communication channels and pulsed entangled photon pair sources.

Efficient single-photon sources at telecom wavelength with fiber-optic interface (Conference Presentation)

Chang-Min Lee, Mustafa Atabey Buyukkaya, Shahriar Aghaeimeibodi +2 more

Bright fiber-coupled single photon sources are essential components for practical quantum network. In this work, we present a bright single photon source based on an InAs/InP quantum dot emitting at telecom wavelengths. We designed a nanobeam with a photonic crystal mirror at the other end and a tapered coupler at the other end enabling both directional emission and gaussian-like far-field profile. We detected fiber-coupled single photon count rate of 1.1 MHz with 40 MHz pumping rate. Considering losses from optics and spectral filters, we achieved collection efficiency into first lens of 68% and a total fiber collection efficiency of 8.2%.

Ultra-fast heralded single photon source based on telecom technology

Lutfi Arif Ngah, Olivier Alibart, Laurent Labonté +2 more

The realization of an ultra-fast source of heralded single photons emitted at the wavelength of 1540 nm is reported. The presented strategy is based on state-of-the-art telecom technology, combined with off-the-shelf fiber components and waveguide non-linear stages pumped by a 10 GHz repetition rate laser. The single photons are heralded at a rate as high as 2.1 MHz with a heralding efficiency of 42%. Single-photon character of the source is inferred by measuring the second-order autocorrelation function. For the highest heralding rate, a value as low as 0.023 is found. This not only proves negligible multi-photon contributions but also represents one of the best measured values reported to date for heralding rates in the MHz regime. These performances, associated with a device-like configuration, are key ingredients for both fast and secure quantum communication protocols.

An Efficient, High-Quality Single-Photon Source

Xing Ding, Yu He, Z.-C. Duan +9 more

In recent decades, single-photon sources have emerged as key resources in the emerging field of quantum information, including quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation and optical quantum computing. To be practically useful for scalable quantum technologies, a single-photon source must simultaneously possess three qualities: high purity, photon indistinguishability and efficiency. We have developed a single-photon source that combines all three of these key features into a single device.
