Abstract

The spherical-to-deformed quantum phase transition of the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) is investigated using the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). The $U(5)$--$SU(3)$ transitional Hamiltonian is studied with $χ=-\sqrt{7}/2$. We develop a symmetry-preserving, minimum-qubit VQE framework for collective nuclear models, achieving a substantial reduction in qubit requirements without compromising the finite-size quantum-phase-transition physics. The transition is characterized through the normalized $d$-boson occupation and ground-state energy derivatives. Finite-size results are found to approach the analytic critical point $ξ_c=8/17\simeq0.470588$, with an independent order-parameter extrapolation yielding $ξ_\infty=0.46986(61)$. The VQE reproduces ground-state energies and structural observables to numerical precision. These results demonstrate the potential of symmetry-reduced VQE for efficient quantum simulations of collective nuclear dynamics and quantum phase transitions.

Quantum phase transitions studied within the interacting boson model

Pavel Cejnar, Jan Jolie

We study quasicritical phenomena in transitions between two "quantum phases" of a finite boson system, described by the interacting boson model 1 used in nuclear physics. The model is formulated in the algebraic framework and has a simple geometrical interpretation; the "phases" represented by dynamical symmetries U(5) and SU(3) correspond to spherical and deformed nuclear shapes. The quasicriticality of the U(5)-SU(3) transition is shown to be connected with the following phenomena simultaneously occurring in a narrow parameter region between the symmetries: (a) abrupt structural changes of eigenstates, (b) multiple avoided crossing of levels, (c) peaked density of exceptional points, (d) qualitative changes of the corresponding classical potential. We show that these spectroscopic features influence the dynamics of intersymmetry transitions in the model parameter space if the parameters themselves become dynamical variables.

Alternative characterization of the spherical to axially deformed shape-phase transition in the interacting boson model

L. R. Dai, Feng Pan, L. Liu +2 more

The quantum phase transitional behavior of an alternative characterization of the spherical to axially deformed shape-phase transition in the interacting boson model is explored. Specifically, the usual SU(3) quadrupole-quadrupole interaction is replaced by an O(6) cubic interaction, and the transitional behaviors of the low-lying energy levels, eigenstates, isomer shifts, $E$2 transition rates, and expectation values of shape variables across the entire transitional region are all examined within this context. A comparison with outcomes of the usual U(5)-SU(3) transitional description shows that the spherical to axially deformed shape-phase transition can also be described within this alternative context, especially near the critical point. However, with the O(6) cubic interaction the transition is considerably smoother than for the U(5)-SU(3) case, but with the nuclear shape less well defined, even in the axially deformed limit. It is also shown that the new scheme seems better than the usual U(5)-SU(3) scheme in describing the low-lying spectrum of ${}^{152}$Sm with X(5) critical point symmetry.

Regular and chaotic classical dynamics in the U(5)-SU(3) quantum phase transition of the IBM

Michal Macek, A. Leviatan

We study the classical dynamics in a generic first-order quantum phase transition between the U(5) and SU(3) limits of the interacting boson model. The dynamics is chaotic, of Hénon-Heiles type, in the spherical phase and is regular, yet sensitive to local degeneracies, in the deformed phase. Both types of dynamics persist in the coexistence region resulting in a divided phase space.

Scaling properties of quantum shape phase transitions in the interacting boson model-1

Elizabeth T. Williams, R. J. Casperson, Volker Werner

The evolution of system observables at critical points of quantum phase transitions in atomic nuclei is explored within the context of the interacting boson model-1. The evolution of energies and transition strengths in the ground state band at the infinite-size critical point are examined with respect to system size. Properties of first-order phase transitions away from the U(5)-SU(3) leg of the Casten triangle are examined, and the effects of angular momentum on the evolution of system observables at the critical point are investigated for the first time.

Ground-state entanglement and preserved dynamical symmetry in the interacting boson model

Feng Pan, Yingxin Wu, L. R. Dai +1 more

We introduce an exact bipartite entanglement entropy between the s - and d -boson degrees of freedom in the interacting boson model (IBM), evaluated from finite- N eigenstates with good angular momentum. Unlike coherent-state approaches, the present formulation avoids mixing different angular-momentum sectors. The entanglement entropy reproduces the expected signatures of the U(5)–SU(3) [ S U ‾ (3)] and U(5)–O(6) shape transitions, while revealing a pronounced minimum at the O(6) point along the SU(3)–O(6)– S U ‾ (3) path, in sharp contrast to previous coherent-state results. We show that critical quantum fluctuations govern the local enhancement of entanglement near transition regions, whereas the entanglement hierarchy at the dynamical-symmetry limits is governed by the preserved local dynamical symmetry of the Schmidt-partitioned s - d space. The entanglement is weakest at the U(5) limit, intermediate at the O(6) limit, and strongest at the SU(3) [ S U ‾ (3)] limits, revealing an inverse correlation between preserved local dynamical symmetry and quantum entanglement in the finite- N IBM.

Finite-size scaling exponents in the interacting boson model

Sébastien Dusuel, Julien Vidal, J. M. Arias +2 more

We investigate the finite-size scaling exponents for the critical point at the shape-phase transition from U(5) (spherical) to O(6) (deformed \ensuremath{\gamma}-unstable) dynamical symmetries of the interacting boson model, making use of the Holstein-Primakoff boson expansion and the continuous unitary transformation technique. We compute exactly the leading-order correction to the ground-state energy, the gap, the expectation value of the d-boson number in the ground state and the $E2$ transition probability from the ground state to the first excited state and determine the corresponding finite-size scaling exponents.

Symmetry-Reduced Variational Quantum Simulation of the U(5)→SU(3)U(5)\rightarrow SU(3)U(5)→SU(3) Quantum Phase Transition in the Interacting Boson Model

The VQE reproduces ground-state energies and structural observables to numerical precision.
