Abstract

We investigate the transverse-field thermodynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, whose tilted screw-chain geometry and anisotropic Landé $g$ tensor generate spatially modulated Zeeman couplings. Angle-resolved magnetocaloric-effect (MCE) measurements reveal a high-field temperature minimum near the transverse-field Ising critical field for $H\parallel[110]$ that persists and shifts only weakly upon field rotation. Tensor-network calculations show that the rotation-induced staggered transverse field rapidly lowers the Ising critical field and that the magnetic Grüneisen ratio changes sign near the high-field temperature minimum, consistent with experiment. Our results establish that a dominant MCE response can persist away from the Ising critical region, suggesting a route to magnetic cooling by tailoring anisotropic Zeeman-coupling configurations in quantum magnets.

Evolution from Kitaev to XXZ spin chains via distortion: Application to BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

Philip Richard, Mandev Bhullar, Hae-Young Kee

BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ is a prototypical spin-orbit-coupled Ising-chain antiferromagnet that provides a unique platform for studying field-induced quantum magnetism. Under a transverse magnetic field, it exhibits unusual magnetic properties, including an anomalous staggered magnetization and a pronounced anisotropy of the critical field with respect to the in-plane field direction. While these phenomena have been attributed phenomenologically to a site-dependent anisotropic $g$-tensor, a recent microscopic theory has shown that spin-orbit coupling naturally generates bond-dependent Heisenberg, Kitaev, and $Γ$ exchange interactions. Here, we unify these two pictures by extending the microscopic theory to incorporate distortions of the CoO$_6$ octahedra. We show that the distortions not only generate the site-dependent anisotropic $g$-tensor but also renormalize the staggered exchange interactions through a distortion-induced contribution that partially compensates the Kitaev-derived staggered term. Using point-charge calculations to estimate the $g$-tensor of BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, we demonstrate that the strong anisotropy of the critical field originates from the combined effects of the modified exchange interactions and the anisotropic $g$-tensor. Our work provides a unified microscopic framework for understanding the magnetic anisotropy of spin-orbit-coupled Ising-chain materials.

Solitonic excitations in the Ising anisotropic chain BaCo2V2O8 under large transverse magnetic field

Quentin Faure, Shintaro Takayoshi, B. Grenier +6 more

We study the dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Heisenberg antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{BaCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ under a transverse magnetic field. Combining inelastic neutron scattering experiments and theoretical analyses by field theories and numerical simulations, we mainly elucidate the structure of the spin excitation spectrum in the high-field phase, appearing above the quantum phase transition point ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}10\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$. We find that it is characterized by collective solitonic excitations superimposed on a continuum. These solitons are strongly bound in pairs due to the effective staggered field induced by the nondiagonal $g$ tensor of the compound and are topologically different from the fractionalized spinons in the weak-field region. The dynamical susceptibility numerically calculated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation method shows an excellent agreement with the measured spectra, which enables us to identify the dispersion branches with elementary excitations. The lowest-energy dispersion has an incommensurate nature and has a local minimum at an irrational wave number due to the applied transverse field.

E 8 Spectra of Quasi-One-Dimensional Antiferromagnet BaCo 2 V 2 O 8 under Transverse Field

We report ^{51}V NMR and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo_{2}V_{2}O_{8} under transverse field along the [010] direction. The scaling behavior of the spin-lattice relaxation rate above the Néel temperatures unveils a 1D quantum critical point (QCP) at H_{c}^{1D}≈4.7 T, which is masked by the 3D magnetic order. With the aid of accurate analytical analysis and numerical calculations, we show that the zone center INS spectrum at H_{c}^{1D} is precisely described by the pattern of the 1D quantum Ising model in a magnetic field, a class of universality described in terms of the exceptional E_{8} Lie algebra. These excitations are nondiffusive over a certain field range when the system is away from the 1D QCP. Our results provide an unambiguous experimental realization of the massive E_{8} phase in the compound, and open a new experimental route for exploring the dynamics of quantum integrable systems as well as physics beyond integrability.

Renormalization of magnetic chains in a field: Isothermal magnetocaloric effect

J. Szṅajd

Motivated by the recently developed [T. Plackowski et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 73, 2755 (2002)] technique for measuring isothermal magnetocaloric coefficient $({M}_{T})$, we revisit the thermodynamic properties of coupled spin chains in a field. The coupled Ising antiferromagnetic chains in two and three dimensions, quantum $XY$ chain in a transverse field, and Heisenberg chain are considered. For the Ising model the shift of the critical temperature under magnetic field and dependence of ${M}_{T}$ on interchain coupling are found. The field dependence of ${M}_{T}$ for several models is presented. It is demonstrated that in the disordered phase in the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, ${M}_{T}$ changes sign at some value of the magnetic field. Generally, ${M}_{T}$ is negative if magnetic field competes with a short-range order, and consequently it can be an indicator of the change in the short-range correlation.

Magnetic Gruneisen ratio of the random transverse-field Ising chain

Thomas Vojta, José A. Hoyos

The magnetic analog of the Grüneisen parameter, i.e., the magnetocaloric effect, is a valuable tool for studying field-tuned quantum phase transitions. We determine the magnetic Grüneisen parameter of the one-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model, focusing on its lowtemperature behavior at the exotic infinite-randomness quantum critical point and in the associated quantum Griffiths phases. 1 Introduction Zero-temperature quantum phase transitions are characterized by a competition between different quantum ground states. Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Spin Dynamics in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Ising-Like Antiferromagnet BaCo 2 V 2 O 8

Quentin Faure, Shintaro Takayoshi, Virginie Simonet +8 more

Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one-dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet BaCo_{2}V_{2}O_{8} in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a Néel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly, the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinless fermions in one dimension. We especially observe the rise of mainly longitudinal excitations, a hallmark of the unconventional low-field regime in Ising-like quantum antiferromagnetic chains.
