Abstract

Open quantum spin systems offer a previously unexplored route to realizing deconfined quantum criticality. We consider a spin-1/2 $J$-$Q_3$ chain, consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg exchange and a competing multi-spin interaction favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) state, with each spin component coupled to a bosonic bath. Using non-Abelian bosonization and renormalization-group (RG) analysis, combined with large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we determine the phase diagram and the associated phase transitions of the model. We show that strong dissipation stabilizes an AFM phase for sub-Ohmic, Ohmic, and super-Ohmic baths. Continuous AFM-VBS transitions at finite dissipation are found upon increasing the multi-spin interaction in both the sub-Ohmic and Ohmic regimes. Critical properties are obtained through perturbative RG analysis and QMC simulations. In the Ohmic case, the critical point features spinon deconfinement and emergent O(4) symmetry. In the sub-Ohmic regime, the transition may also involve spinon deconfinement, provided that spinons remain deconfined in the dissipative VBS phase. In addition, in the super-Ohmic regime, we propose a transition from AFM phase to a quasi-long-range ordered phase.

Deconfined quantum criticality in spin-1/2 chains with long-range interactions

Sibin Yang, Dao‐Xin Yao, Anders W. Sandvik

We study spin-$1/2$ chains with long-range power-law decaying unfrustrated (bipartite) Heisenberg exchange $J_r \propto r^{-α}$ and multi-spin interactions $Q$ favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) ground state. Employing quantum Monte Carlo techniques and Lanczos diagonalization, we analyze order parameters and excited-state level crossings to characterize quantum states and phase transitions in the $(α,Q)$ plane. For weak $Q$ and sufficiently slowly decaying Heisenberg interactions (small $α$), the system has a long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, and upon increasing $α$ there is a continuous transition into a quasi long-range ordered (QLRO) critical state of the type in the standard Heisenberg chain. For rapidly decaying long-range interactions, there is transition between QLRO and VBS ground states of the same kind as in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain. Our most important finding is a direct continuous quantum phase transition between the AFM and VBS states - a close analogy to the 2D deconfined quantum-critical point. In previous 1D analogies the ordered phases both have gapped fractional excitations, and the critical point is a conventional Luttinger Liquid. In our model the excitations fractionalize upon transitioning from the AFM state, changing from spin waves to deconfined spinons. We extract critical exponents at the AFM-VBS transition and use order-parameter distributions to study emergent symmetries. We find emergent O($4$) symmetry of the O($3$) AFM and scalar VBS order parameters. Thus, the order parameter fluctuations exhibit the covariance of a uniaxially deformed O($4$) sphere (an "elliptical" symmetry). This unusual quantum phase transition does not yet have any known field theory description, and our detailed results can serve to guide its construction. We discuss possible experimental realizations.

Tunable deconfined quantum criticality and interplay of different valence-bond solid phases*

Bowen Zhao, Jun Takahashi, Anders W. Sandvik

We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study an S = 1/2 spin model with competing multi-spin interactions. We find a quantum phase transition between a columnar valence-bond solid (cVBS) and a Néel antiferromagnet (AFM), as in the scenario of deconfined quantum-critical points, as well as a transition between the AFM and a staggered valence-bond solid (sVBS). By continuously varying a parameter, the sVBS–AFM and AFM–cVBS boundaries merge into a direct sVBS–cVBS transition. Unlike previous models with putative deconfined AFM–cVBS transitions, e.g., the standard J–Q model, in our extended J–Q model with competing cVBS and sVBS inducing terms the transition can be tuned from continuous to first-order. We find the expected emergent U(1) symmetry of the microscopically Z 4 symmetric cVBS order parameter when the transition is continuous. In contrast, when the transition changes to first-order, the clock-like Z 4 fluctuations are absent and there is no emergent higher symmetry. We argue that the confined spinons in the sVBS phase are fracton-like. We also present results for an SU(3) symmetric model with a similar phase diagram. The new family of models can serve as a useful tool for further investigating open questions related to deconfined quantum criticality and its associated emergent symmetries.

Deconfined Boundary Phase Transition of a Quantum Critical Heisenberg Model

Chengxiang Ding, Long Zhang

We investigate the boundary phases of a (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical Heisenberg model with a dangling spin chain. By introducing a multispin $Q$-term along the boundary, we drive a continuous boundary transition from an antiferromagnetic (AF) order to a valence-bond solid (VBS) order. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we locate the critical point at $Q_{c}=0.310(11)$, and obtain the critical exponents at $Q_{c}$, including $y_{s}=0.81(4)$ and the scaling dimensions of AF and VBS order parameters $Δ_{s}=0.660(15)$ and $Δ_{v}=0.204(14)$. Deconfined pseudocriticality in a model spin-1 quantum antiferromagnet

Vikas Vijigiri, Sumiran Pujari, Nisheeta Desai

Abstract Berry phase interference arguments that underlie the theory of deconfined quantum criticality (DQC) for S = 1 / 2 antiferromagnets have also been invoked to allow for continuous transitions in S = 1 magnets including a Néel to (columnar) valence bond solid (cVBS) transition. We provide a microscopic model realization of this transition on the square lattice consisting of Heisenberg exchange ( J H ) and biquadratic exchange ( J B ) that favor a Néel phase, and a designed Q -term ( Q B ) interaction which favors a cVBS through large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. For J H = 0 , this model is equivalent to the SU(3) JQ model with a Néel-cVBS transition that has been argued to be DQC through QMC. Upon turning on J H which brings down the symmetry to SU(2), we find multiple signatures—a single critical point, high quality collapse of correlation ratios and order parameters, ‘U(1)-symmetric’ cVBS histograms and lack of double-peak in order parameter histograms for largest sizes studied near the critical point—that are highly suggestive of a continuous transition scenario. However, Binder analysis finds negative dips that grow sub-extensively that we interpret as these transitions rather being pseudocritical. This, along with recent results on spin- 1 2 models, suggests that deconfined pseudocriticality is the more generic scenario.

One-dimensional model for deconfined criticality with Z 3 × Z 3 symmetry

Brenden Roberts, Shenghan Jiang, Olexei I. Motrunich

We continue recent efforts to discover examples of deconfined quantum criticality in one-dimensional models. In this work we investigate the transition between a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ ferromagnet and a phase with valence bond solid (VBS) order in a spin chain with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ global symmetry. We study a model with alternating projective representations on the sites of the two sublattices, allowing the Hamiltonian to connect to an exactly solvable point having VBS order with the character of $SU(3)$-invariant singlets. Such a model does not admit a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem typical of systems realizing deconfined critical points. Nevertheless, we find evidence for a direct transition from the VBS phase to a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ ferromagnet. Finite-entanglement scaling data are consistent with a second-order or weakly first-order transition. We find in our parameter space an integrable lattice model apparently describing the phase transition, with a very long, finite, correlation length of 190878 lattice spacings. Based on exact results for this model, we propose that the transition is extremely weakly first order and is part of a family of deconfined quantum critical points described by walking of renormalization group flows.

Quantum spin chains with bond dissipation

Weber, Manuel

We study the effect of bond dissipation on the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model. In analogy to the spin-Peierls problem, the dissipative bath is described by local harmonic oscillators that modulate the spin exchange coupling, but instead of a single boson frequency we consider a continuous bath spectrum $\propto ω^s$. Using an exact quantum Monte Carlo method for retarded interactions, we show that for $s<1$ any finite coupling to the bath induces valence-bond-solid order, whereas for $s>1$ the critical phase of the isolated chain remains stable up to a finite critical coupling. We find that, even in the presence of the gapless bosonic spectrum, the spin-triplet gap remains well defined for any system size, from which we extract a dynamical critical exponent of $z=1$. We provide evidence for a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition that is governed by the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Our results suggest that the critical properties of the dissipative system are the same as for the spin-Peierls model, irrespective of the different interaction range, i.e., power-law vs. exponential decay, of the retarded dimer-dimer interaction, indicating that the spin-Peierls criticality is robust with respect to the bosonic density of states.
