Quantum spin chains with bond dissipation

Abstract

We study the effect of bond dissipation on the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model. In analogy to the spin-Peierls problem, the dissipative bath is described by local harmonic oscillators that modulate the spin exchange coupling, but instead of a single boson frequency we consider a continuous bath spectrum $\propto ω^s$. Using an exact quantum Monte Carlo method for retarded interactions, we show that for $s<1$ any finite coupling to the bath induces valence-bond-solid order, whereas for $s>1$ the critical phase of the isolated chain remains stable up to a finite critical coupling. We find that, even in the presence of the gapless bosonic spectrum, the spin-triplet gap remains well defined for any system size, from which we extract a dynamical critical exponent of $z=1$. We provide evidence for a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition that is governed by the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Our results suggest that the critical properties of the dissipative system are the same as for the spin-Peierls model, irrespective of the different interaction range, i.e., power-law vs. exponential decay, of the retarded dimer-dimer interaction, indicating that the spin-Peierls criticality is robust with respect to the bosonic density of states.

Deconfined quantum critical point in a dissipative spin-1/2 chain

Longye Lu, Shifeng Cui, Wenan Guo

Open quantum spin systems offer a previously unexplored route to realizing deconfined quantum criticality. We consider a spin-1/2 $J$-$Q_3$ chain, consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg exchange and a competing multi-spin interaction favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) state, with each spin component coupled to a bosonic bath. Using non-Abelian bosonization and renormalization-group (RG) analysis, combined with large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we determine the phase diagram and the associated phase transitions of the model. We show that strong dissipation stabilizes an AFM phase for sub-Ohmic, Ohmic, and super-Ohmic baths. Continuous AFM-VBS transitions at finite dissipation are found upon increasing the multi-spin interaction in both the sub-Ohmic and Ohmic regimes. Critical properties are obtained through perturbative RG analysis and QMC simulations. In the Ohmic case, the critical point features spinon deconfinement and emergent O(4) symmetry. In the sub-Ohmic regime, the transition may also involve spinon deconfinement, provided that spinons remain deconfined in the dissipative VBS phase. In addition, in the super-Ohmic regime, we propose a transition from AFM phase to a quasi-long-range ordered phase.

Néel to spin-Peierls transition in a quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg model coupled to bond phonons

Jason C. Pillay, Keola Wierschem, Pinaki Sengupta

The zero and finite temperature spin-Peierls transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model coupled to adiabatic bond phonons is investigated using the stochastic series expansion (SSE) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The quantum phase transition from a gapless N\'eel state to a spin-gapped Peierls state is studied in the parameter space spanned by spatial anisotropy, interchain coupling strength, and spin-lattice coupling strength. It is found that for any finite interchain coupling, the transition to a dimerized Peierls ground state only occurs when the spin-lattice coupling exceeds a finite, nonzero critical value. This is in contrast to the pure 1D model (zero interchain coupling), where adiabatic/classical phonons lead to a dimerized ground state for any nonzero spin-phonon interaction. The phase diagram in the parameter space shows that for a strong interchain coupling, the relation between the interchain coupling and the critical value of the spin-phonon interaction is linear whereas for weak interchain coupling, this behavior is found to have a natural logarithmlike relation. No region was found to have a long range magnetic order and dimerization occurring simultaneously. Instead, the N\'eel state order vanishes simultaneously with the setting in of the spin-Peierls state. For the thermal phase transition, a continuous heat capacity with a peak at the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ shows a second order phase transition. The variation of the equilibrium bond length distortion ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{eq}$ with temperature showed a power law relation which decayed to zero as the temperature was increased to ${T}_{c}$, indicating a continuous transition from the dimerized phase to a paramagnetic phase with uniform bond length and zero antiferromagnetic susceptibility.

Dissipation-Induced Order: The S=1/2 Quantum Spin Chain Coupled to an Ohmic Bath

Manuel Weber, David J. Luitz, Fakher F. Assaad

We consider an S=1/2 antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg chain where each site is coupled to an independent bosonic bath with ohmic dissipation. The coupling to the bath preserves the global SO(3) spin symmetry. Using large-scale, approximation-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that any finite coupling to the bath suffices to stabilize long-range antiferromagnetic order. This is in stark contrast to the isolated Heisenberg chain where spontaneous breaking of the SO(3) symmetry is forbidden by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. A linear spin-wave theory analysis confirms that the memory of the bath and the concomitant retarded interaction stabilize the order. For the Heisenberg chain, the ohmic bath is a marginal perturbation so that exponentially large system sizes are required to observe long-range order at small couplings. Below this length scale, our numerics is dominated by a crossover regime where spin correlations show different power-law behaviors in space and time. We discuss the experimental relevance of this crossover phenomena.

Critical phase induced by Berry phase and dissipation in a spin chain

Simon Martin, Tarun Grover

Motivated by experiments on spin chains embedded in a metallic bath, as well as closed quantum systems described by long-range interacting Hamiltonians, we study a critical $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ spin chain perturbed by dissipation, or equivalently, after space-time rotation, long-range spatial interactions. The interplay of dissipation and the Wess-Zumino (Berry phase) term results in a rich phase diagram with multiple renormalization-group fixed points. For a range of the exponent that characterizes the dissipative bath, we find a second-order phase transition between the fixed point that describes an isolated critical spin chain and a dissipation-induced-ordered phase. More interestingly, for a different range of the exponent, we find a stable, gapless, nonrelativistic phase of matter whose existence necessarily requires coupling to the dissipative bath. Upon tuning the exponent, we find that the fixed point corresponding to this gapless, stable phase ``annihilates'' the fixed point that describes the transition out of this phase to the ordered phase. We also study a relativistic version of our model, and we identify a new critical point. We discuss the implications of our work for Kondo lattice systems and engineered long-range interacting quantum systems.

Transition between critical antiferromagnetic phases in the $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain

Adam J. McRoberts, C. Hooley, Andrew G. Green

The $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain is one of the canonical models of quantum magnetism, and has long been known to host a critical antiferromagnetic phase with power-law decay of spin correlations. We show in this Letter that there are, in fact, \textit{two} distinct critical antiferromagnetic phases, where the roles of the local dimer field and its dual field are interchanged: the `Affleck-Haldane' phase near the Heisenberg point $J_2 = 0$, where the dimer field that parametrises local singlet order is gapless and part of a joint $O(4)$ Néel-singlet order parameter; and the `Zirnbauer' phase which appears at sufficiently large ferromagnetic $J_2$, where the dimer field is gapped out and its \textit{dual} field -- the instanton density of the $O(3)$ Néel field -- is critical instead. The phases are so-named because each realises one of the competing pictures for how the $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model with a topological theta term renormalises to the $\mathfrak{\hat{su}}(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. We support these predictions with density matrix renormalisation group calculations.

Deconfined quantum criticality in spin-1/2 chains with long-range interactions

Sibin Yang, Dao‐Xin Yao, Anders W. Sandvik

We study spin-$1/2$ chains with long-range power-law decaying unfrustrated (bipartite) Heisenberg exchange $J_r \propto r^{-α}$ and multi-spin interactions $Q$ favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) ground state. Employing quantum Monte Carlo techniques and Lanczos diagonalization, we analyze order parameters and excited-state level crossings to characterize quantum states and phase transitions in the $(α,Q)$ plane. For weak $Q$ and sufficiently slowly decaying Heisenberg interactions (small $α$), the system has a long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, and upon increasing $α$ there is a continuous transition into a quasi long-range ordered (QLRO) critical state of the type in the standard Heisenberg chain. For rapidly decaying long-range interactions, there is transition between QLRO and VBS ground states of the same kind as in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain. Our most important finding is a direct continuous quantum phase transition between the AFM and VBS states - a close analogy to the 2D deconfined quantum-critical point. In previous 1D analogies the ordered phases both have gapped fractional excitations, and the critical point is a conventional Luttinger Liquid. In our model the excitations fractionalize upon transitioning from the AFM state, changing from spin waves to deconfined spinons. We extract critical exponents at the AFM-VBS transition and use order-parameter distributions to study emergent symmetries. We find emergent O($4$) symmetry of the O($3$) AFM and scalar VBS order parameters. Thus, the order parameter fluctuations exhibit the covariance of a uniaxially deformed O($4$) sphere (an "elliptical" symmetry). This unusual quantum phase transition does not yet have any known field theory description, and our detailed results can serve to guide its construction. We discuss possible experimental realizations.
