Abstract

We study a time-dependent non-Hermitian generalisation of the Schütte-Da~Providência model describing a bosonic mode coupled to collective particle-hole excitations. Using a time-dependent Dyson map, we construct a Hermitian counterpart and reduce the collective fermionic sector by means of the random phase approximation (RPA). The resulting dynamics is mapped to two time-dependent harmonic-oscillator branches with instantaneous RPA frequencies $W_\pm(t)$. We determine the corresponding stability regions and compute transition probabilities between instantaneous oscillator states. In first-order instantaneous-basis perturbation theory the leading transition $n\to n+2$ is proportional to $\dot W_j/W_j$, showing that it is purely nonadiabatic and absent in the time-independent case. We compare this result with exact Lewis-Riesenfeld transition amplitudes within the RPA approximation. Numerical examples show that different components of the Dyson map provide distinct driving mechanisms: the scaling parameter modulates the effective coupling, while the squeezing parameter acts through a moving-boundary contribution. In both cases the induced collective transitions exhibit parametric-resonance peaks and sideband structures.

Bounded Dyson maps and cavity-driven transitions in a time-dependent non-Hermitian spin-boson model

Andreas Fring, Marta Reboiro

We study a time-dependent non-Hermitian extension of the Schütte-Da Providência spin-boson Hamiltonian with complex couplings. A time-dependent Dyson map relates the model to a Hermitian counterpart and induces a positive physical metric. Separating the positive and unitary parts of the map, we prove a no-go result for a natural Gaussian number-squeeze-number class: for a nonvanishing linear spin-boson interaction, Hermiticity and bounded invertibility force the entire bosonic part of the Dyson map to be unitary. The squeezing parameter therefore selects a time-dependent Hermitian frame rather than contributing to the metric. The squeezed and non-squeezed Hamiltonians are related exactly by a time-dependent unitary transformation. The conserved quantity formed from the boson number and spin projection is replaced by a transported dynamical invariant, so a closed squeezing-frame protocol cannot generate transitions between distinct invariant sectors. We then introduce an independently driven single-mode cavity with quadratic term $iχ(t)(b^{\dagger2}-b^2)/2$. This physical drive breaks the corresponding continuous symmetry while preserving parity and couples dressed sectors differing by two bosonic quanta. The non-Hermitian asymmetry parameter, which also determines the bounded metric, tunes the effective Hermitian coupling, transition strengths and resonance conditions. Direct numerical propagation confirms the distinction between passive frame-induced mixing and genuine cavity transitions, the asymmetry-controlled resonance shift, and the validity of the first-order transition formula in the weak-driving regime.

Infinite series of time-dependent Dyson maps

Andreas Fring, Rebecca Tenney

Abstract We propose and explore a scheme that leads to an infinite series of time-dependent Dyson maps which associate different Hermitian Hamiltonians to a uniquely specified time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We identify the underlying symmetries responsible for this feature respected by various Lewis–Riesenfeld invariants. The latter are used to facilitate the explicit construction of the Dyson maps and metric operators. As a concrete example for which the scheme is worked out in detail we present a two-dimensional system of oscillators that are coupled to each other in a non-Hermitian PT -symmetrical fashion.

Perturbative approach for strong and weakly coupled time-dependent for non-Hermitian quantum systems

Andreas Fring, Rebecca Tenney

Abstract We propose a perturbative approach to determine the time-dependent Dyson map and the metric operator associated with time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We apply the method to a pair of explicitly time-dependent two dimensional harmonic oscillators that are weakly coupled to each other in a PT-symmetric fashion and to the strongly coupled explicitly time-dependent negative quartic anharmonic oscillator potential. We demonstrate that once the perturbative Ansatz is set up the coupled differential equations resulting order by order may be solved recursively in a constructive manner, thus bypassing the need for making any guess for the Dyson map or the metric operator. Exploring the ambiguities in the solutions of the order by order differential equations naturally leads to a whole set of inequivalent solutions for the Dyson maps and metric operators implying different physical behaviour as demonstrated for the expectation values of the time-dependent energy operator.

Non-Hermitian quantum Fermi accelerator

Andreas Fring, Takano Taira

We exactly solve a quantum Fermi accelerator model consisting of a time-independent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with time-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions. A Hilbert space for such systems can be defined in two equivalent ways, either by first constructing a time-independent Dyson map and subsequently unitarily mapping to fixed boundary conditions or by first unitarily mapping to fixed boundary conditions followed by the construction of a time-dependent Dyson map. In turn, this allows to construct time-dependent metric operators from a time-independent metric and two time-dependent unitary maps that freeze the moving boundaries. From the time-dependent energy spectrum, we find the known possibility of oscillatory behavior in the average energy in the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ regime, whereas in the spontaneously broken $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ regime we observe the feature of a one-time depletion of the energy. We show that the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ broken regime is mended with a moving boundary, equivalently to mending it with a time-dependent Dyson map.

Entanglement between uncoupled modes with time-dependent complex frequencies

Danilo Cius, Gustavo M. Uhdre, Antonio S. M. de Castro +1 more

In this work we present the general unified description for the unitary time evolution generated by time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians embedding the bosonic representations of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ and $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ Lie algebras. We take into account a time-dependent Hermitian Dyson maps written in terms of the elements of those algebras with the relation between non-Hermitian and its Hermitian counterpart being independent of the algebra realization. As a direct consequence, we verify that a time-evolved state of uncoupled modes modulated by a time-dependent complex frequency may exhibits a nonzero entanglement even when the cross operators, typical of the interaction between modes, are absent. This is due the nonlocal nature of the nontrivial dynamical Hilbert space metric encoded in the time-dependent parameters of the general Hermitian Dyson map, which depend on the imaginary part of the complex frequency. We illustrate our approach by setting the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case where the imaginary part of frequency is linear on time for the two-mode bosonic realization of Lie algebras.

Unitarity of the time-evolution and observability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians for time-dependent Dyson maps

F. S. Luiz, M. A. de Ponte, M. H. Y. Moussa

Abstract We present an strategy for the derivation of a time-dependent Dyson map which ensures simultaneously the unitarity of the time evolution and the observability of the whole time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian or parts of it. The time-dependent Dyson map is derived through a constructed Schrödinger-like equation governed, in one case, by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian itself or, in another case, by its parts. In the former case, when the whole non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered, our scheme ensures the time-independence of the metric operator despite the time-dependence of the Dyson map, a necessary condition for the observability of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In the later case, however, when parts of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered, our method ensures the simultaneous time-dependence of the Dyson map and the metric operator. In this latter case what is ensured is the observability of the remaining part of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that was not chosen for the derivation of the Dyson map. Illustrative examples, for both cases, are derived from a driven non-Hermitian Harmonic oscillator.
