Perturbative approach for strong and weakly coupled time-dependent for non-Hermitian quantum systems

Abstract

Abstract We propose a perturbative approach to determine the time-dependent Dyson map and the metric operator associated with time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We apply the method to a pair of explicitly time-dependent two dimensional harmonic oscillators that are weakly coupled to each other in a PT-symmetric fashion and to the strongly coupled explicitly time-dependent negative quartic anharmonic oscillator potential. We demonstrate that once the perturbative Ansatz is set up the coupled differential equations resulting order by order may be solved recursively in a constructive manner, thus bypassing the need for making any guess for the Dyson map or the metric operator. Exploring the ambiguities in the solutions of the order by order differential equations naturally leads to a whole set of inequivalent solutions for the Dyson maps and metric operators implying different physical behaviour as demonstrated for the expectation values of the time-dependent energy operator.

Infinite series of time-dependent Dyson maps

Andreas Fring, Rebecca Tenney

Abstract We propose and explore a scheme that leads to an infinite series of time-dependent Dyson maps which associate different Hermitian Hamiltonians to a uniquely specified time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We identify the underlying symmetries responsible for this feature respected by various Lewis–Riesenfeld invariants. The latter are used to facilitate the explicit construction of the Dyson maps and metric operators. As a concrete example for which the scheme is worked out in detail we present a two-dimensional system of oscillators that are coupled to each other in a non-Hermitian PT -symmetrical fashion.

Solvable two-dimensional time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum systems with infinite dimensional Hilbert space in the broken PT-regime

Andreas Fring, Thomas Frith

Abstract We provide exact analytical solutions for a two-dimensional explicitly time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum system. While the time-independent variant of the model studied is in the broken PT-symmetric phase for the entire range of the model parameters, and has therefore a partially complex energy eigenspectrum, its time-dependent version has real energy expectation values at all times. In our solution procedure we compare the two equivalent approaches of directly solving the time-dependent Dyson equation with one employing the Lewis–Riesenfeld method of invariants. We conclude that the latter approach simplifies the solution procedure due to the fact that the invariants of the non-Hermitian and Hermitian system are related to each other in a pseudo-Hermitian fashion, which in turn does not hold for their corresponding time-dependent Hamiltonians. Thus constructing invariants and subsequently using the pseudo-Hermiticity relation between them allows to compute the Dyson map and to solve the Dyson equation indirectly. In this way one can bypass to solve nonlinear differential equations, such as the dissipative Ermakov–Pinney equation emerging in our and many other systems.

Unitarity of the time-evolution and observability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians for time-dependent Dyson maps

F. S. Luiz, M. A. Pontes, M. H. Y. Moussa

Here we present an strategy for the derivation of a time-dependent Dyson map which ensures simultaneously the unitarity of the time evolution and the observability of a quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The time-dependent Dyson map is derived through a constructed Schrödinger-like equation governed by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian itself; despite its time-dependence our scheme ensures the time-independence of the metric operator, a necessary condition for the observability of the quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As an illustrative example we consider a driven Harmonic oscillator described by a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. After computing the Dyson map and demonstrating the time-independence of the associated metric operator, we successfully derive an eigenvalue equation for this time-dependent Hamiltonian which enable us to analyze the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking process.

Unitarity of the time-evolution and observability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians for time-dependent Dyson maps

F. S. Luiz, M. A. de Ponte, M. H. Y. Moussa

Abstract We present an strategy for the derivation of a time-dependent Dyson map which ensures simultaneously the unitarity of the time evolution and the observability of the whole time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian or parts of it. The time-dependent Dyson map is derived through a constructed Schrödinger-like equation governed, in one case, by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian itself or, in another case, by its parts. In the former case, when the whole non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered, our scheme ensures the time-independence of the metric operator despite the time-dependence of the Dyson map, a necessary condition for the observability of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In the later case, however, when parts of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered, our method ensures the simultaneous time-dependence of the Dyson map and the metric operator. In this latter case what is ensured is the observability of the remaining part of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that was not chosen for the derivation of the Dyson map. Illustrative examples, for both cases, are derived from a driven non-Hermitian Harmonic oscillator.

Unitary quantum evolution for time-dependent quasi-Hermitian systems with nonobservable Hamiltonians

Andreas Fring, M. H. Y. Moussa

It has been argued that it is incompatible to maintain unitary time evolution for time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians when the metric operator is explicitly time dependent. We demonstrate here that the time-dependent Dyson equation and the time-dependent quasi-Hermiticity relation can be solved consistently in such a scenario for a time-dependent Dyson map and time-dependent metric operator, respectively. These solutions are obtained at the cost of rendering the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to be a nonobservable operator as it ceases to be quasi-Hermitian when the metric becomes time dependent.

An Introduction to PT-Symmetric Quantum Mechanics-Time-Dependent Systems

Andreas Fring

Abstract I will provide a pedagogical introduction to non-Hermitian quantum systems that are PT-symmetric, that is they are left invariant under a simultaneous parity transformation (P) and time-reversal (T). I will explain how generalised versions of this antilinear symmetry can be utilised to explain that these type of systems possess real eigenvalue spectra in parts of their parameter spaces and how to set up a consistent quantum mechanical framework for them that enables a unitary time-evolution. In the second part I will explain how to extend this framework to explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonian systems and report in particular on recent progress made in this context. I will explain how to construct the essential key quantity in this framework, the time-dependent Dyson map and metric and solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, in an algebraic fashion, using time-dependent Darboux transformations, utilising Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants, point transformations and some approximation methods. I comment on the ambiguities of this metric and demonstrate that this can even lead to infinite series of metric operators. I conclude with some applications to PT-symmetrically coupled oscillators, demonstrate the equivalence of the time-dependent double wells and unstable anharmonic oscillators and show how the unphysical PT-symmetrically broken regions in the parameter space for the time-independent theory becomes physical in the explicitly time-dependent systems. I discuss how this leads to a prolongation of the otherwise rapidly decaying von Neumann entropy. The so-called sudden death of the entropy is stopped at a finite value.1
