Abstract

We exactly solve a quantum Fermi accelerator model consisting of a time-independent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with time-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions. A Hilbert space for such systems can be defined in two equivalent ways, either by first constructing a time-independent Dyson map and subsequently unitarily mapping to fixed boundary conditions or by first unitarily mapping to fixed boundary conditions followed by the construction of a time-dependent Dyson map. In turn, this allows to construct time-dependent metric operators from a time-independent metric and two time-dependent unitary maps that freeze the moving boundaries. From the time-dependent energy spectrum, we find the known possibility of oscillatory behavior in the average energy in the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ regime, whereas in the spontaneously broken $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ regime we observe the feature of a one-time depletion of the energy. We show that the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ broken regime is mended with a moving boundary, equivalently to mending it with a time-dependent Dyson map.

Time-driven mending of the 2D, non-Hermitian, coupled oscillator.

Andreas Fring, Thomas Frith

We provide a time-dependent Dyson map and metric for the two dimensional harmonic oscillator with a non-Hermitian $i xy$ coupling term. This particular time-independent model exhibits spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and becomes unphysical in the broken regime, with the spectrum becoming partially complex. By introducing an explicit time-dependence into the Dyson map, we provide a time-dependent metric that renders the model consistent across the unbroken and broken regimes.

Time-dependence in non-Hermitian quantum systems

Thomas Frith

We present a coherent and consistent framework for explicit time-dependence in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. The area of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics has been growing rapidly over the past twenty years. This has been driven by the fact that $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric non-Hermitian systems exhibit real energy eigenvalues and unitary time evolution. Historically, the introduction of time into the world of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics has been a conceptually difficult problem to address, as it requires the Hamiltonian to become unobservable. We solve this issue with the introduction of a new observable energy operator and explain why its instigation is a necessary and natural progression in this setting. For the first time, the introduction of time has allowed us to make sense of the parameter regime in which the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is spontaneously broken. Ordinarily, in the time-independent setting, the energy eigenvalues become complex and the wave functions are asymptotically unbounded. We demonstrate that in the time-dependent setting this broken symmetry can be mended and analysis on the spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$ regime is indeed possible. We provide many examples of this mending on a wide range of different systems, beginning with a $2\times2$ matrix model and extending to higher dimensional matrix models and coupled harmonic oscillator systems with infinite Hilbert space. Furthermore, we use the framework to perform analysis on time-dependent quasi-exactly solvable models. We present the "eternal life" of entropy in this thesis. Ordinarily, for entangled quantum systems coupled to the environments, the entropy decays rapidly to zero. However, in the spontaneously broken regime, we find the entropy decays asymptotically to a non-zero value. We create an elegant framework for Darboux and Darboux/Crum transformations for time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.

Unitarity of the time-evolution and observability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians for time-dependent Dyson maps

F. S. Luiz, M. A. Pontes, M. H. Y. Moussa

Here we present an strategy for the derivation of a time-dependent Dyson map which ensures simultaneously the unitarity of the time evolution and the observability of a quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The time-dependent Dyson map is derived through a constructed Schrödinger-like equation governed by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian itself; despite its time-dependence our scheme ensures the time-independence of the metric operator, a necessary condition for the observability of the quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As an illustrative example we consider a driven Harmonic oscillator described by a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. After computing the Dyson map and demonstrating the time-independence of the associated metric operator, we successfully derive an eigenvalue equation for this time-dependent Hamiltonian which enable us to analyze the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking process.

Unitarity of the time-evolution and observability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians for time-dependent Dyson maps

F. S. Luiz, M. A. de Ponte, M. H. Y. Moussa

Abstract We present an strategy for the derivation of a time-dependent Dyson map which ensures simultaneously the unitarity of the time evolution and the observability of the whole time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian or parts of it. The time-dependent Dyson map is derived through a constructed Schrödinger-like equation governed, in one case, by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian itself or, in another case, by its parts. In the former case, when the whole non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered, our scheme ensures the time-independence of the metric operator despite the time-dependence of the Dyson map, a necessary condition for the observability of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In the later case, however, when parts of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered, our method ensures the simultaneous time-dependence of the Dyson map and the metric operator. In this latter case what is ensured is the observability of the remaining part of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that was not chosen for the derivation of the Dyson map. Illustrative examples, for both cases, are derived from a driven non-Hermitian Harmonic oscillator.

Unitary quantum evolution for time-dependent quasi-Hermitian systems with nonobservable Hamiltonians

Andreas Fring, M. H. Y. Moussa

It has been argued that it is incompatible to maintain unitary time evolution for time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians when the metric operator is explicitly time dependent. We demonstrate here that the time-dependent Dyson equation and the time-dependent quasi-Hermiticity relation can be solved consistently in such a scenario for a time-dependent Dyson map and time-dependent metric operator, respectively. These solutions are obtained at the cost of rendering the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to be a nonobservable operator as it ceases to be quasi-Hermitian when the metric becomes time dependent.
