Abstract

Dipolar quantum mixtures provide a route to many-body phases in which long-range anisotropic interactions couple with density, composition and spatial order. Here we realize a new quantum-degenerate dipolar mixture of $^{162}$Dy and $^{164}$Dy in a single-species-like apparatus. The mixture combines nearly matched single-particle Hamiltonians, tunable interactions and composition parameters, and isotope-resolved characterization. Tuning the interaction balance and relative composition reorganizes the coupled condensates from a miscible state into core--shell-like, side-by-side, and exchanged core--shell-like immiscible configurations. These results establish dysprosium isotope mixtures as a compact and versatile platform for multicomponent dipolar quantum matter, ranging from impurity physics to binary supersolidity.

Dipolar Bose-Bose mixture of dysprosium isotopes with controllable interspecies interactions

M. Dürbeck, L. Reihs, J. P. Marulanda-Serna +5 more

We report on the realization of a quantum-degenerate Bose-Bose mixture of Dy 162 and Dy 164 . Owing to the near-identical mass and polarizability of the two isotopes, the mixture thermalizes efficiently, with evaporation trajectories closely following those of the single-isotope case. Using a broad interspecies Feshbach resonance, we explore a miscible-immiscible transition between the two Bose-Einstein condensates. The tunability of the interspecies interaction, combined with the large magnetic dipole moment of Dy, makes this platform well suited for exploring dipolar effects in ultracold mixtures, including multicomponent supersolidity.

Dipolar Quantum Mixtures of Erbium and Dysprosium Atoms

A. Trautmann, P. Ilzhöfer, Gianmaria Durastante +4 more

We report on the first realization of heteronuclear dipolar quantum mixtures of highly magnetic erbium and dysprosium atoms. With a versatile experimental setup, we demonstrate binary Bose-Einstein condensation in five different Er-Dy isotope combinations, as well as one Er-Dy Bose-Fermi mixture. Finally, we present first studies of the interspecies interaction between the two species for one mixture.

Study of the inter-species interactions in an ultracold dipolar mixture

Claudia Politi, A. Trautmann, P. Ilzhöfer +4 more

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of the dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) on the total inter-species interaction in an erbium-dysprosium mixture. By rotating the dipole orientation we are able to tune the effect of the long-range and anisotropic DDI, and therefore the in-trap clouds displacement. We present a theoretical description for our binary system based on an extended Gross-Pitaevskii (eGP) theory, including the single-species beyond mean-field terms, and we predict a lower and an upper bound for the inter-species scattering length $a_{12}$. Our work is a first step towards the investigation of the experimentally unexplored dipolar miscibility-immiscibility phase diagram and the realization of quantum droplets and supersolid states with heteronuclear dipolar mixtures.

Miscibility in coupled dipolar and non-dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

R. Kishor Kumar, Paulsamy Muruganandam, Lauro Tomio +1 more

We perform a full three-dimensional study on miscible-immiscible conditions for coupled dipolar and non-dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC), confined in anisotropic traps. In view of recent experimental studies, our focus was the atomic erbium–dysprosium ( 168 Er– 164 Dy) and dysprosium–dysprosium ( 164 Dy– 162 Dy) mixtures. The miscibility is quantified by the overlap of the two-component densities, using an appropriate defined parameter. By verifying that stable regimes for pure-dipolar coupled BECs are only possible in pancake-type traps, we obtain some non-trivial local minimum biconcave-shaped states with density oscillations in both components. For non-dipolar systems with repulsive interactions, we show that immiscible stable configurations are also possible in cigar-type geometries. The main role of the trap aspect ratio and inter-species contact interaction for the miscibility is verified for different configurations, from non-dipolar to pure dipolar systems.

Dipolar condensed atomic mixtures and miscibility under rotation

Lauro Tomio, R. Kishor Kumar, A. Gammal

By considering symmetric- and asymmetric-dipolar coupled mixtures (with dysprosium and erbium isotopes), we report a study on relevant anisotropic effects, related to spatial separation and miscibility, due to dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) in rotating binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. The binary mixtures are kept in strong pancake-like traps, with repulsive two-body interactions modeled by an effective two-dimensional (2D) coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The DDI are tuned from repulsive to attractive by varying the dipole polarization angle. A clear spatial separation is verified in the densities for attractive DDIs, being angular for symmetric mixtures and radial for asymmetric ones. Also relevant is the mass-imbalance sensibility observed by the vortex-patterns in symmetric- and asymmetric-dipolar mixtures. In an extension of this study, here we show how the rotational properties and spatial separation of these dipolar mixture are affected by a quartic term added to the harmonic trap of one of the components.

Induced supersolidity in a Dy-Er mixture

Soumyadeep Halder, Subrata Das, Sonjoy Majumder

The recent experimental realization of the heteronuclear dipolar mixture of Dy and Er atoms opens fascinating prospects for creating intriguing novel phases in dipolar quantum gases. The experimentally measured value of intraspecies $s$-wave scattering length of $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ condensate in a $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ mixture is larger than its intraspecies dipolar length implies that the $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ condensate itself will not be in a regime of dominated dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). However, we find that the presence of $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ atoms with high magnetic moment induces droplet nucleation and supersolidity in the $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ condensate via the long-range and anisotropic interspecies DDI. Remarkably, we find that the imbalance in the magnetic dipole moment combined with its strong anisotropic coupling leads to the emergence of unique ground-state phases. The emerging phases include doubly superfluid states, a mixture of insulating droplets and supersolid states, binary supersolids with uniform and alternating domains and a combination of supersolid-superfluid mixed states. We delineate the properties of all these ground-state phases and construct a phase diagram. We also explore the dynamical evolution across these phase boundaries via a linear quench of interspecies scattering length. Although we demonstrate the result for the $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ mixture, our results are generally valid for other dipolar bosonic mixtures of different Dy-Er isotope combinations and may become an important benchmark for future experimental scenarios.
