Abstract

Stabilizer codes provide exact lattice realizations of bosonic topological orders. In contrast, systematic stabilizer descriptions of intrinsically fermionic topological phases remain much less developed. In this work, we introduce Majorana-Pauli stabilizer codes, a class of exactly solvable fermionic lattice models whose stabilizers are built from both generalized Pauli operators and Majorana operators. As a main example, we construct an exactly solvable stabilizer realization of the fermionic toric code: an intrinsically fermionic $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order in $(2{+}1)$ dimensions, using $\mathbb Z_8$ Pauli operators coupled to Majorana modes. Within this stabilizer framework, the anyons, string operators, fusion rules, and braiding statistics all follow naturally from the stabilizer algebra. More broadly, we show that the fermionic toric code belongs to a duality web generated by anyon condensation and by gauging bosonic or fermion-parity symmetries. This web connects bosonic topological orders, symmetry-enriched topological phases, and both bosonic and fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases, all within a common stabilizer description. We further show that the construction extends to all Abelian fermionic topological orders with gapped boundaries and to all supercohomology fermionic SPT phases in $(2{+}1)$ dimensions. Going beyond Majorana operators, we introduce fermionic versions of the clock and shift operators and use them to construct an exact bosonization map for $\mathbb Z_D^F$ symmetries for $D$ even. Using this, we realize a stabilizer model for a nontrivial $\mathbb Z_8^F$ fermionic SPT phase with no free-fermion analog. Altogether, these results extend the stabilizer-code paradigm to a broad class of intrinsically fermionic phases bridging fermionic quantum many-body physics to quantum error correction.

Pauli stabilizer formalism for topological quantum field theories and generalized statistics

Yitao Feng, Hanyu Xue, Ryohei Kobayashi +2 more

Topological quantum field theory (TQFT) provides a unifying framework for describing topological phases of matter and for constructing quantum error-correcting codes, playing a central role across high-energy physics, condensed matter, and quantum information. A central challenge is to formulate topological order on lattices and to extract the properties of topological excitations from microscopic Hamiltonians. In this work, we construct new classes of lattice gauge theories as Pauli stabilizer models, realizing a wide range of TQFTs in general dimensions. We develop a lattice description of extended excitations and systematically determine their generalized statistics. Our main example is the (4+1)D fermionic-loop toric code, obtained by condensing the $e^2m^2$-loop in the (4+1)D $\mathbb Z_4$ toric code. We show that the loop excitation exhibits fermionic loop statistics: the 24-step loop-flipping process yields a phase of $-1$. Our Pauli stabilizer models realize all twisted 2-form gauge theories in (4+1)D, the higher-form Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT classified by $H^5(B^2G,U(1))$. Beyond (4+1)D, the fermionic-loop toric codes form a family of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders in arbitrary dimensions, realized as explicit Pauli stabilizer codes using $\mathbb Z_4$ qudits. Finally, we develop a Pauli-based framework that defines generalized statistics for extended excitations in any dimension, yielding computable lattice unitary processes to detect nontrivial statistics. For example, we propose anyonic membrane statistics in (6+1)D, as well as fermionic membrane and volume statistics in arbitrary dimensions. We construct new families of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders: the fermionic-membrane toric code and the fermionic-volume toric code. In addition, we demonstrate that $p$-dimensional excitations in $2p+2$ spatial dimensions can support anyonic $p$-brane statistics for only even $p$.

Pauli Stabilizer Models of Twisted Quantum Doubles

Tyler D. Ellison, Yu-An Chen, Arpit Dua +3 more

We construct a Pauli stabilizer model for every two-dimensional Abelian topological order that admits a gapped boundary. Our primary example is a Pauli stabilizer model on four-dimensional qudits that belongs to the double semion (DS) phase of matter. The DS stabilizer Hamiltonian is constructed by condensing an emergent boson in a Z 4 toric code, where the condensation is implemented at the level of the ground states by two-body measurements. We rigorously verify the topological order of the DS stabilizer model by identifying an explicit finite-depth quantum circuit (with ancillary qubits) that maps its ground-state subspace to that of a DS string-net model. We show that the construction of the DS stabilizer Hamiltonian generalizes to all twisted quantum doubles (TQDs) with Abelian anyons. This yields a Pauli stabilizer code on composite-dimensional qudits for each such TQD, implying that the classification of topological Pauli stabilizer codes extends well beyond stacks of toric codes-in fact, exhausting all Abelian anyon theories that admit a gapped boundary. We also demonstrate that symmetry-protected topological phases of matter characterized by type-I and type-II cocycles can be modeled by Pauli stabilizer Hamiltonians by gauging certain 1-form symmetries of the TQD stabilizer models.

Pauli topological subsystem codes from Abelian anyon theories

Tyler D. Ellison, Yu-An Chen, Arpit Dua +3 more

We construct Pauli topological subsystem codes characterized by arbitrary two-dimensional Abelian anyon theories–this includes anyon theories with degenerate braiding relations and those without a gapped boundary to the vacuum. Our work both extends the classification of two-dimensional Pauli topological subsystem codes to systems of composite-dimensional qudits and establishes that the classification is at least as rich as that of Abelian anyon theories. We exemplify the construction with topological subsystem codes defined on four-dimensional qudits based on the Z4(1) anyon theory with degenerate braiding relations and the chiral semion theory–both of which cannot be captured by topological stabilizer codes. The construction proceeds by "gauging out" certain anyon types of a topological stabilizer code. This amounts to defining a gauge group generated by the stabilizer group of the topological stabilizer code and a set of anyonic string operators for the anyon types that are gauged out. The resulting topological subsystem code is characterized by an anyon theory containing a proper subset of the anyons of the topological stabilizer code. We thereby show that every Abelian anyon theory is a subtheory of a stack of toric codes and a certain family of twisted quantum doubles that generalize the double semion anyon theory. We further prove a number of general statements about the logical operators of translation invariant topological subsystem codes and define their associated anyon theories in terms of higher-form symmetries.

Topological Stabilizer Models on Continuous Variables

Julio C. Magdalena de la Fuente, Tyler D. Ellison, Meng Cheng +1 more

We construct a family of two-dimensional topological stabilizer codes on continuous variable (CV) degrees of freedom, which generalize homological rotor codes and the toric-GKP code. Our topological codes are built using the concept of boson condensation—we start from a parent stabilizer code based on an R gauge theory and condense various bosonic excitations. This produces a large class of topological CV stabilizer codes, including ones that are characterized by the anyon theories of U ( 1 ) 2 n × U ( 1 ) − 2 m Chern-Simons theories, for arbitrary pairs of positive integers ( n , m ) . Most notably, this includes anyon theories that are nonchiral and nevertheless do not admit a gapped boundary. It is widely believed that such anyon theories cannot be realized by any stabilizer model on finite-dimensional systems. We conjecture that these CV codes go beyond codes obtained from concatenating a topological qudit code with a local encoding into CVs, and thus constitute the first example of topological codes that are intrinsic to CV systems. Moreover, we study the Hamiltonians associated with the topological CV stabilizer codes and show that, although they have a gapless spectrum, they can become gapped with the addition of a quadratic perturbation. We show that similar methods can be used to construct a gapped Hamiltonian whose anyon theory agrees with a U ( 1 ) 2 Chern-Simons theory. Our work initiates the study of scalable stabilizer codes that are intrinsic to CV systems and highlights how error-correcting codes can be used to design and analyze many-body systems of CVs that model lattice gauge theories.

One-dimensional lattice models for the boundary of two-dimensional Majorana fermion symmetry-protected topological phases: Kramers-Wannier duality as an exact Z2 symmetry

Robert A. Jones, Max A. Metlitski

It is well known that symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases host nontrivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. However, for SPT phases of bosons (fermions) within the cohomology (supercohomology) classification the boundary can be recreated without the bulk at the cost of a non-onsite-symmetry action. This raises the following question: Can one also mimic the boundaries of SPT phases which lie outside the (super)cohomology classification? In this paper, we study this question in the context of $(2+1)$-dimensional $[(2+1)\mathrm{D}]$ fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G={Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective one-dimensional (1D) lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1D model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We derive the action of the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry on this Hilbert space and find a simple three-site Hamiltonian that respects this symmetry. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising conformal field theory where the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the $(2+1)\mathrm{D}$ topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ with ${\mathcal{T}}^{2}={(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{\mathcal{F}}$.

Berry phases of vison transport in Z2 topologically ordered states from exact fermion-flux lattice dualities

Chuan Chen, Peng Rao, Inti Sodemann

We develop an exact map of all states and operators from two-dimensional lattices of spins-$1/2$ into lattices of fermions and bosons with mutual semionic statistical interaction that goes beyond previous dualities of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ lattice gauge theories because it does not rely on imposing local conservation laws and captures the motion of ``charges'' and ``fluxes'' on equal footing. This map allows to explicitly compute the Berry phases for the transport of fluxes in a large class of symmetry-enriched topologically ordered states with emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields that includes chiral, nonchiral, Abelian or non-Abelian, that can be perturbatively connected to models where the visons are static and the emergent fermionic spinons have a noninteracting dispersion. The numerical complexity of computing such vison phases reduces, therefore, to computing overlaps of ground states of free-fermion Hamiltonians. Among other results, we establish numerically the conditions under which the Majorana-carrying flux excitation in Ising-topologically ordered states enriched by translations acquires the 0 or $\ensuremath{\pi}$ phase when moving around a single plaquette.
