Abstract

We develop an exact map of all states and operators from two-dimensional lattices of spins-$1/2$ into lattices of fermions and bosons with mutual semionic statistical interaction that goes beyond previous dualities of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ lattice gauge theories because it does not rely on imposing local conservation laws and captures the motion of ``charges'' and ``fluxes'' on equal footing. This map allows to explicitly compute the Berry phases for the transport of fluxes in a large class of symmetry-enriched topologically ordered states with emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields that includes chiral, nonchiral, Abelian or non-Abelian, that can be perturbatively connected to models where the visons are static and the emergent fermionic spinons have a noninteracting dispersion. The numerical complexity of computing such vison phases reduces, therefore, to computing overlaps of ground states of free-fermion Hamiltonians. Among other results, we establish numerically the conditions under which the Majorana-carrying flux excitation in Ising-topologically ordered states enriched by translations acquires the 0 or $\ensuremath{\pi}$ phase when moving around a single plaquette.

Majorana-Pauli stabilizer codes and duality webs of fermionic topological phases

Meng Sun, Zongyuan Wang, Nathanan Tantivasadakarn +1 more

Stabilizer codes provide exact lattice realizations of bosonic topological orders. In contrast, systematic stabilizer descriptions of intrinsically fermionic topological phases remain much less developed. In this work, we introduce Majorana-Pauli stabilizer codes, a class of exactly solvable fermionic lattice models whose stabilizers are built from both generalized Pauli operators and Majorana operators. As a main example, we construct an exactly solvable stabilizer realization of the fermionic toric code: an intrinsically fermionic $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order in $(2{+}1)$ dimensions, using $\mathbb Z_8$ Pauli operators coupled to Majorana modes. Within this stabilizer framework, the anyons, string operators, fusion rules, and braiding statistics all follow naturally from the stabilizer algebra. More broadly, we show that the fermionic toric code belongs to a duality web generated by anyon condensation and by gauging or ungauging bosonic or fermionic symmetries. This web connects bosonic topological orders, symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, and both bosonic and fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases, all within a common stabilizer description. We extend this construction to all Abelian fermionic topological orders with gapped boundaries and to fermionic SPT phases whose fully gauged theories are Abelian. Going beyond Majorana operators, we introduce fermionic versions of the clock and shift operators and use them to construct an exact bosonization map for $\mathbb Z_D^F$ symmetries for $D$ even. Using this, we realize a stabilizer model for a nontrivial $\mathbb Z_8^F$ fermionic SPT phase with no free-fermion analog. Altogether, these results extend the stabilizer-code paradigm to a broad class of intrinsically fermionic phases bridging fermionic quantum many-body physics to quantum error correction.

Anderson localization of emergent quasiparticles: Spinon and vison interplay at finite temperature in a Z2 gauge theory in three dimensions

Minho Kim, Giuseppe De Tomasi, Claudio Castelnovo

Fractional statistics of quasiparticle excitations often plays an important role in the detection and characterization of topological systems. In this paper, we investigate the case of a three-dimensional (3D) ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory, where the excitations take the form of bosonic spinon quasiparticle and vison flux tubes, with mutual semionic statistics. We focus on an experimentally relevant intermediate temperature regime, where sparse spinons hop coherently on a dense quasistatic and stochastic vison background. The effective Hamiltonian reduces to a random-sign bimodal tight-binding model, where both the particles and the disorder are borne out of the same underlying quantum spin liquid (QSL) degrees of freedom, and the coupling between the two is purely driven by the mutual fractional statistics. We study the localization properties and observe a mobility edge located close to the band edge, whose transition belongs to the 3D Anderson model universality class. Spinons allowed to propagate through the quasistatic vison background appear to display quantum diffusive behavior. When the visons are allowed to relax, in response to the presence of spinons in equilibrium, we observe the formation of vison depletion regions slave to the support of the spinon wave function. We discuss how this behavior can give rise to measurable effects in the relaxation, response, and transport properties of the system and how these may be used as signatures of the mutual semionic statistics and as precursors of the QSL phase arising in the system at lower temperatures.

Simple Z2 lattice gauge theories at finite fermion density

Christian G. Prosko, Shu-Ping Lee, Joseph Maciejko

Lattice gauge theories are a powerful language to theoretically describe a variety of strongly correlated systems, including frustrated magnets, high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors, and topological phases. However, in many cases gauge fields couple to gapless matter degrees of freedom, and such theories become notoriously difficult to analyze quantitatively. In this paper we study several examples of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ lattice gauge theories with gapless fermions at finite density, in one and two spatial dimensions, that are either exactly soluble or whose solution reduces to that of a known problem. We consider complex fermions (spinless and spinful) as well as Majorana fermions and study both theories where Gauss' law is strictly imposed and those where all background charge sectors are kept in the physical Hilbert space. We use a combination of duality mappings and the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ slave-spin representation to map our gauge theories to models of gauge-invariant fermions that are either free, or with on-site interactions of the Hubbard or Falicov-Kimball type that are amenable to further analysis. In 1D, the phase diagrams of these theories include free-fermion metals, insulators, and superconductors, Luttinger liquids, and correlated insulators. In 2D, we find a variety of gapped and gapless phases, the latter including uniform and spatially modulated flux phases featuring emergent Dirac fermions, some violating Luttinger's theorem.

Theory of weak symmetry breaking of translations in Z2 topologically ordered states and its relation to topological superconductivity from an exact lattice Z2 charge-flux attachment

Peng Rao, Inti Sodemann

We study Z 2 topologically ordered states enriched by translational symmetry by employing a recently developed two-dimensional (2D) bosonization approach that implements an exact Z 2 charge-flux attachment in the lattice.Such states can display "weak symmetry breaking" of translations, in which both the Hamiltonian and ground state remain fully translational invariant but the symmetry is "broken" by its anyon quasiparticles, in the sense that its action maps them into a different superselection sector. We demonstrate that this phenomenon occurs when the fermionic spinons form a weak topological superconductor in the form of a 2D stack of one-dimensional Kitaev wires, leading to the amusing property that there is no local operator that can transport the π -flux quasiparticle across a single Kitaev wire of fermonic spinons without paying an energy gap in spite of the vacuum remaining fully translational invariant. We explain why this phenomenon occurs hand in hand with other previously identified peculiar features such as ground-state degeneracy dependence on the size of the torus and the appearance of dangling boundary Majorana modes in certain Z 2 topologically ordered states. Moreover, by extending the Z 2 charge-flux attachment to open lattices and cylinders, we construct a plethora of exactly solvable models providing an exact description of their dispersive Majorana gapless boundary modes. We also review the Z × (Z 2 ) 3 classification of 2D BdG Hamiltonians (class D) enriched by translational symmetry and provide arguments on its robust stability against interactions and self-averaging disorder that preserve translational symmetry.

Exact quantum spin liquids with topological order on maple-leaf and trellis lattices

Li Ern Chern, Roderich Moessner, Claudio Castelnovo

We construct spin models with bond-dependent anisotropic interactions on the penta-coordinated maple-leaf and trellis lattices, which yield exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids akin to the Kitaev honeycomb model. We characterize the resulting ground states by their flux sectors, Chern numbers, and topological excitations. Using replica exchange quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the gauge fluxes are ordered at sufficiently low temperatures such that every unit triangle has $\pm π/2$-flux, where the sign is uniform across the system, and every unit hexagon (square) has $0$-flux ($π$-flux) within the parameter space of interest. We map out the topological phase diagram for each model, which reveals parameter regimes hosting $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and Ising topological orders, and we derive an analytical expression for the mass term of the Majorana fermions, the vanishing of which indicates a transition between these phases. We further establish the correspondence between individual vortices (i.e., flux excitations) and two species of anyons in the dimer limit, overcoming the obstacle faced by degenerate perturbation theory in treating odd-length elementary plaquettes. Interestingly, we find that two dimer limits of the maple-leaf model with distinct assignments of anyon species can be smoothly connected to each other in the vortex-free sector, but they are separated by fermion-gap-closing transitions in certain two-vortex sectors.

Self-dual $S_3$ gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions

Da-Chuan Lu, Chong Wang, Ashvin Vishwanath

Electric-magnetic self-duality of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory, realized microscopically as a half-lattice-translation exchanging electric charge and magnetic flux, has been an influential example of a duality symmetry with an exact lattice realization. We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the $S_3$ quantum double $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the $\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2$ anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon $C$ and fluxon $F$, is realized via lattice translation. Consequently we find that the zigzag boundary termination of the model realizes, without fine-tuning, a gapless critical edge state described by the tetracritical Ising CFT. The bulk admits three independent $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{em}}$-preserving bosonic perturbations, driving $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ into distinct gapped phases. We analyze these transitions by three independent methods: category-theoretic anyon condensation, microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, and Chern-Simons-Higgs theory, which all agree, yielding a unified picture. These examples motivate a minimal-condensation principle: proliferating a bosonic anyon generically drives condensation of a minimal condensable algebra containing it, with symmetry-related condensates appearing as degenerate vacua that spontaneously break the anyon-permutation symmetry. Our model construction extends to an infinite family of self-dual dihedral quantum doubles $\mathcal{D}(D_{2n})$. Notably, each model is sign-problem-free, opening the door to large-scale numerical exploration of the phases of non-Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs theories.

Self-dual S3S_3S3 gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions

We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the S3S_3S3 quantum double D(S3)\mathcal{D}(S_3)D(S3) on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the Z2em\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2Z2em anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon CCC and fluxon FFF, is realized via lattice translation.
