Abstract

We construct an explicit Lewis-Ermakov-type dynamical invariant for time-dependent two-level systems by exploiting their algebraic correspondence with the time-dependent harmonic oscillator through the $su(2)$ and $su(1,1)$ algebras, which share the common complexification $sl(2,\mathbb{C})$. This invariant provides a closed-form evolution operator and an exact propagator for arbitrary time-dependent coupling $a(t)$ and detuning $b(t)$. We illustrate the method on representative scenarios, including Landau-Zener transitions, non-Hermitian dissipative processes, and adiabatic rapid passage, and we obtain inverse-engineered shortcuts to adiabaticity with fully explicit control fields when the auxiliary scaling function is taken to be real.

Solution to the Time-Dependent Coupled Harmonic Oscillators Hamiltonian with Arbitrary Interactions

Alejandro R. Urzúa, I. Ramos-Prieto, M. Fernández‐Guasti +1 more

We show that by using the quantum orthogonal functions invariant, we found a solution to coupled time-dependent harmonic oscillators where all the time-dependent frequencies are arbitrary. This system may be found in many applications such as nonlinear and quantum physics, biophysics, molecular chemistry, and cosmology. We solve the time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators by transforming the Hamiltonian of the interaction using a set of unitary operators. In passing, we show that N time-dependent and coupled oscillators have a generalized orthogonal functions invariant from which we can write a Ermakov–Lewis invariant.

We show that, by using the quantum orthogonal functions invariant, we are able to solve a coupled of time dependent harmonic oscillators where all the time dependent frequencies are arbitrary. We do so, by transforming the time dependent Hamiltonian of the interaction by a set of unitary operators. In passing, we show that $N$ time dependent and coupled oscillators have a generalized orthogonal functions invariant from which we can write a Ermakov-Lewis invariant.

Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants and transitionless quantum driving

Xi Chen, E. Torrontegui, Juan Gonzalo Muga

Different methods have been recently put forward and implemented experimentally to inverse engineer the time-dependent Hamiltonian of a quantum system and accelerate slow adiabatic processes via nonadiabatic shortcuts. In the ``transitionless quantum driving'' proposed by Berry, shortcut Hamiltonians are designed so that the system follows exactly, in an arbitrarily short time, the approximate adiabatic path defined by a reference Hamiltonian. A different approach is based on first designing a Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant to carry the eigenstates of a Hamiltonian from specified initial to final configurations, again in an arbitrary time, and then constructing from the invariant the transient Hamiltonian that connects these boundary configurations. We show that the two approaches, apparently quite different in form and so far in results, are, in fact, strongly related and potentially equivalent, so that the inverse-engineering operations in one of them can be reinterpreted and understood in terms of the concepts and operations of the other one. We study, as explicit examples, expansions of time-dependent harmonic traps and the state preparation of two-level systems.

Squeezing and adiabaticity breaking in time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators

Mattia Orlandini, Beatrice Donelli, Lorenzo Buffoni +1 more

The quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency is a paradigmatic model of driven quantum dynamics and one of the few nontrivial systems that admits an exact analytical solution. In this review paper, we present a unified treatment of the time-dependent oscillator based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method, Bogoliubov transformations and the Ermakov-Pinney equation. We show how these approaches naturally connect to squeezing for the description of excitations production, and to the breakdown of adiabaticity under generic frequency protocols. Exact results for sudden quenches and smooth ramps are discussed in detail. By explicitly bridging invariant methods and squeezing formalism, this review is meant to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding nonequilibrium dynamics in quadratic potentials, with applications ranging from thermodynamics and condensed matter to quantum control theory.

Ermakov and non-Ermakov systems in quantum dissipative models

Antonio Boulhosa Nassar

Via the hydrodynamical formulation of quantum mechanics, a unified protocol to treat the quantum time-dependent harmonic oscillator with friction is presented, described by two different models: an explicitly time-dependent, linear Schrödinger equation (Caldirola–Kanai model) and a logarithmic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (Kostin model). For the former model, an Ermakov system that makes it possible to obtain an invariant of Ermakov–Lewis-type is derived. For the latter model, a non-Ermakov system is derived instead and it is shown that neither an exact nor an approximate invariant of Ermakov–Lewis-type exists.

KvN mechanics approach to the time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillator

I. Ramos-Prieto, Alejandro R. Urzúa, Francisco Soto +1 more

Using the Ermakov-Lewis invariants appearing in KvN mechanics, the time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillator is studied. The analysis builds upon the operational dynamical model, from which it is possible to infer quantum or classical dynamics; thus, the mathematical structure governing the evolution will be the same in both cases. The Liouville operator associated with the time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillator can be transformed using an Ermakov-Lewis invariant, which is also time dependent and commutes with itself at any time. Finally, because the solution of the Ermakov equation is involved in the evolution of the classical state vector, we explore some analytical and numerical solutions.
