KvN mechanics approach to the time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillator

Abstract

Using the Ermakov-Lewis invariants appearing in KvN mechanics, the time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillator is studied. The analysis builds upon the operational dynamical model, from which it is possible to infer quantum or classical dynamics; thus, the mathematical structure governing the evolution will be the same in both cases. The Liouville operator associated with the time-dependent frequency harmonic oscillator can be transformed using an Ermakov-Lewis invariant, which is also time dependent and commutes with itself at any time. Finally, because the solution of the Ermakov equation is involved in the evolution of the classical state vector, we explore some analytical and numerical solutions.

Solution to the Time-Dependent Coupled Harmonic Oscillators Hamiltonian with Arbitrary Interactions

Alejandro R. Urzúa, I. Ramos-Prieto, M. Fernández‐Guasti +1 more

We show that by using the quantum orthogonal functions invariant, we found a solution to coupled time-dependent harmonic oscillators where all the time-dependent frequencies are arbitrary. This system may be found in many applications such as nonlinear and quantum physics, biophysics, molecular chemistry, and cosmology. We solve the time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators by transforming the Hamiltonian of the interaction using a set of unitary operators. In passing, we show that N time-dependent and coupled oscillators have a generalized orthogonal functions invariant from which we can write a Ermakov–Lewis invariant.

Quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass

I. Ramos-Prieto, A. Espinosa-Zuñiga, M. Fernández-Guasti +1 more

We use the Fourier operator to transform a time-dependent mass quantum harmonic oscillator into a frequency-dependent one. Then we use Lewis–Ermakov invariants to solve the Schrödinger equation by using squeeze operators. Finally, we give two examples of time dependencies: quadratically and hyperbolically growing masses.

Amplitude and phase representation of quantum invariants for the time-dependent harmonic oscillator

M. Fernández‐Guasti, H. M. Moya-Cessa

The correspondence between classical and quantum invariants is established. The Ermakov-Lewis quantum invariant of the time-dependent harmonic oscillator is translated from the coordinate and momentum operators into amplitude and phase operators. In doing so, Turski's phase operator as well as Susskind-Glogower operators are generalized to the time-dependent harmonic-oscillator case. A quantum derivation of the Manley-Rowe relations is shown as an example.

We show that, by using the quantum orthogonal functions invariant, we are able to solve a coupled of time dependent harmonic oscillators where all the time dependent frequencies are arbitrary. The time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillator: a pedagogical approach via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method

Stanley Santiago Coelho, Lucas Queiroz, Danilo T. Alves

Abstract In quantum mechanics courses, students often solve the Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator with time-independent parameters. However, time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators are relevant in modeling several problems as, for instance, the description of quantum motion of particles in traps, shortcuts to adiabaticity, generation of squeezed states, as well as quantum scalar fields evolving in expanding universes. In the present paper, we discuss, with a pedagogical approach, the quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method, revisiting the main steps to obtain the wave function associated with this model, and briefly discussing the relation between this oscillator and the generation of squeezed states. As examples of didactic applications of time-dependent harmonic oscillators and the Lewis–Riesenfeld method in quantum mechanics courses, we solve the following problems: the calculation of the transition probability associated with a harmonic oscillator which undergoes jumps in its frequency, and the analysis of the dynamics of a quantum particle in a Paul trap.

Quantum derivation of Manley Rowe type relations

M. Fernández‐Guasti, H. M. Moya-Cessa

The Ermakov Lewis quantum invariant for the time dependent harmonic oscillator is expressed in terms of number and phase operators. The identification of these variables is made in accordance with the correspondence principle and the amplitude and phase representation of the classical orthogonal functions invariant. The relationship between the number and phase operators is established through this invariant as the system evolves from one frequency to another. In the specific case where the excitations represent the photon number, these relations are equivalent to the power density transport equations derived in nonlinear optical processes.
