Abstract

We perform an exhaustive semidefinite-programming search over all 11{,}117 connected non-isomorphic simple graphs on eight vertices to maximize the quantum contextuality gap $Δ(G)=\vartheta(G)-α(G)$, where $\vartheta(G)$ is the Lovász theta function and $α(G)$ is the independence number of the exclusion graph $G$ within the Cabello--Severini--Winter framework for projective measurements. A previously uncharacterized graph on $n=8$ vertices and $m=10$ edges, which we name the Quad-$C_5$ graph (graph6 code: \texttt{GCQb`o}), achieves $Δ=0.46784$, surpassing the Wagner graph $W$ ($Δ\approx0.414$, $m=12$) with two fewer edges. We determine numerically, via the PSLQ integer-relation algorithm at 50-digit precision, that Quad-$C_5$ is a \emph{qutrit} contextuality witness with $η_3=1+\sqrt{5}$ (minimal polynomial $x^2-2x-4=0$), while numerical evidence indicates the Wagner graph requires a four-dimensional (two-qubit) Hilbert space. The graph contains four mutually overlapping induced five-cycles, and its adjacency spectrum is dominated by golden-ratio eigenvalues, tracing the contextuality advantage algebraically to the KCBS pentagon. Under depolarizing noise, Quad-$C_5$ at $d=3$ shares the critical visibility $v^*=1/(3\sqrt{5}-5)\approx0.585$ of the KCBS witness -- an analytically provable coincidence arising from a uniform shift of the graph parameters -- while at $d=4$ it strictly surpasses the Wagner graph in noise robustness.

Retrit states violating the KCBS inequality and necessary conditions for maximal contextuality

Fırat Diker, Z. Gedik

Since violations of inequalities implied by non-contextual and local hidden variable theories are observed, it is essential to determine the set of (non-)contextual states. Along this direction, one should determine the conditions under which quantum contextuality is observed. It is also important to determine how one can find maximally contextual qutrits. In this work, we revisit the Klyachko-Can-Binicioğlu-Shumovsky (KCBS) scenario where we observe a five-measurement state-dependent contextuality. We investigate possible symmetries of the KCBS pentagram, i.e., the conservation of the contextual characteristic of a qutrit-system. For this purpose, the KCBS operator including five cyclic measurements is rotated around the Z-axis. We then check a set of rotation angles to determine the contextuality and non-contextuality regions for the eigenstates of the spin-1 operator for an arbitrary rotation. We perform the same operation for the homogeneous linear combination of the eigenstates with spin values +1 and -1. More generally, we work on the real subgroup of the three dimensional Hilbert space to determine the set of (non-)contextual states under certain rotations in the physical Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^3$. Finally, we show data on Euler rotation angles for which maximally contextual retrits (qutrits of the real Hilbert space) are found, and derive mathematical relations through data analysis between Euler angles and qutrit states parameterized with spherical coordinates.

Quantum contextuality of a qutrit state

Zhen‐Peng Xu, Hong-Yi Su, Jing‐Ling Chen

We present a study of quantum contextuality of three-dimensional mixed states for the Klyachko-Can-Binicio\ifmmode \breve{g}\else \u{g}\fi{}lu-Shumovsky (KCBS) and the Kurzy\ifmmode \acute{n}\else \'{n}\fi{}ski-Kaszlikowski (KK) noncontextuality inequalities. For any class of states whose eigenvalues are arranged in decreasing order, a universal set of measurements always exists for the KK inequality, whereas none exists for the KCBS inequality. This difference can be reflected from the spectral distribution of the overall measurement matrix. Our results would facilitate the error analysis for experimental setups, and our spectral method in the paper combined with graph theory could be useful in future studies on quantum contextuality.

Minimum detection efficiency for the loophole-free confirmation of quantum contextuality

向阳, 洪方昱

Klyachko–Can–Binicioglu–Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality is a Bell-like inequality, the violation of which can be used to confirm the existence of quantum contextuality. However, the imperfection of detection efficiency may cause the so-called loophole in actual KCBS’s experiments. We derive an alternative KCBS inequality to deal with the loophole in actual KCBS’s experiments. We prove that if the experimental data violate this KCBS inequality, the loophole-free violation of the original KCBS inequality will occur. We show that the minimum detection efficiency needed for a loophole-free violation of the KCBS inequality is about 0.9738.

Simple Explanation of the Quantum Violation of a Fundamental Inequality

Adán Cabello

We show that the maximum quantum violation of the Klyachko-Can-Binicioğlu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality is exactly the maximum value satisfying the following principle: The sum of probabilities of pairwise exclusive events cannot exceed 1. We call this principle "global exclusivity," since its power shows up when it is applied to global events resulting from enlarged scenarios in which the events in the inequality are considered jointly with other events. We identify scenarios in which this principle singles out quantum contextuality, and show that a recent proof excluding nonlocal boxes follows from the maximum violation imposed by this principle to the KCBS inequality.

Revealing quantum contextuality using a single measurement device

Jaskaran Singh, Rajendra Singh Bhati, Arvind

In this paper we analyze the notion of measurement noncontextuality (MNC) and identify contextual scenarios which involve sequential measurements of only a single measurement device. We show that any noncontextual ontological model fails to explain the statistics of outcomes of a single carefully constructed positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) executed sequentially on a quantum system. The context of measurement arises from the different configurations in which the device can be used. We develop an inequality from the noncontextual (NC) ontic model, and construct a quantum situation involving measurements from the Klyachko-Can-Binicio\ifmmode \check{g}\else \v{g}\fi{}lu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality. We show that the resultant statistics arising from this device violate our NC inequality. This device can be generalized by incorporating measurements from arbitrary $n$-cycle contextuality inequalities of which $n=5$ corresponds to the KCBS inequality. We show that the NC and quantum bounds for various scenarios can be derived more easily using only the functional relationships between the outcomes for larger values $n$. This makes it one of the simpler contextual inequalities to analyze.
