Abstract

We develop a quantum relative entropy method for the mean-field limit of quantum many-body systems. For closed systems governed by the von Neumann equation, we prove a quantitative stability estimate between the $N$-body density matrix and the tensorized solution of the Hartree equation. The argument is based on an entropy production identity, a cancellation mechanism for the centered two-body fluctuation, and a combinatorial estimate controlling the remaining mixed moments. As a consequence, we obtain propagation of chaos in trace norm for fixed marginals. We further combine the entropy estimate with known semiclassical Wasserstein bounds to derive a convergence estimate that is uniform in the Planck constant in an appropriate joint mean-field and semiclassical regime. Finally, we extend the method to finite-dimensional open quantum systems governed by Lindblad dynamics. In this setting, we establish an analogous relative entropy estimate for general bounded two-body interactions, where the mean-field potential is defined through partial trace. This shows that the entropy method does not rely on any special tensor-product decomposition of the interaction.

Mean-field limit and Semiclassical Expansion of a Quantum Particle System

Federica Pezzotti, Mario Pulvirenti

We consider a quantum system constituted by N identical particles interacting by means of a mean-field Hamiltonian. It is well known that, in the limit N → ∞, the one-particle state obeys to the Hartree equation. Moreover, propagation of chaos holds. In this paper, we take care of the dependence by considering the semiclassical expansion of the N-particle system. We prove that each term of the expansion agrees, in the limit N → ∞, with the corresponding one associated with the Hartree equation. We work in the classical phase space by using the Wigner formalism, which seems to be the most appropriate for the present problem.

A simple proof of convergence to the Hartree dynamics in Sobolev trace norms

Ioannis Anapolitanos, Michael Hott

The derivation of the Hartree equation from many-body systems of Bosons in the mean field limit has been very intensively studied in the last couple of years. However, very few results exist showing convergence of the kth marginal of the N-body density matrix to the projection to the k-fold tensor product of the solution of the Hartree equation in stronger trace norms like the energy trace norm, see the work of Michelangeli and Schlein [Commun. Math. Phys. 311(3), 645–687 (2012)] and Lührmann [J. Math. Phys. 53(2), 022105 (2012)]. This issue is from a physical view point very important. The reason is that one can then approximate expectation values of certain observables of the N-body system by means of the Hartree equation, with relaxation of the very restrictive assumption that the observables are bounded operators. Here we consider the non-relativistic case. We prove, assuming only H1-regularity of the initial data, convergence in the energy trace norm without rates, and convergence in any other weaker Sobolev trace norm with rates. Our proof is simple and uses the functional aN introduced by Pickl [Lett. Math. Phys. 97(2), 151–164 (2011)].

Quantum dynamics with mean field interactions: a new approach

László Erdős, Benjamin Schlein

We propose a new approach for the study of the time evolution of a factorized N-particle bosonic wave function with respect to a mean-field dynamics with a bounded interaction potential. The new technique, which is based on the control of the growth of the correlations among the particles, leads to quantitative bounds on the difference between the many-particle Schrödinger dynamics and the one-particle nonlinear Hartree dynamics. In particular the one-particle density matrix associated with the solution to the N-particle Schrödinger equation is shown to converge to the projection onto the one-dimensional subspace spanned by the solution to the Hartree equation with a speed of convergence of order 1/N for all fixed times.

Divergence of Lubkin's series for a quantum subsystem's mean entropy

Jacob P. Dyer

In 1978, Lubkin proposed a method of approximating the mean von Neumann entropy for a subsystem of a finite-dimensional quantum system in an overall pure state by expanding the entropy as a series in terms of the mean trace of powers of the system's reduced density operator, but the convergence of this series was never established. We find an exact closed form expression for the mean traces, which enables us to prove that the series converges if and only if the system's dimension $m\le2$, in spite of the fact that Lubkin's proposed approximation for the entropy is now known to be correct.

Quantitative propagation of chaos for Lindblad dynamics

Nina H. Amini, Sofiane Chalal

We consider an open quantum system governed $N$-body Lindblad equation and study mean-field limits in this setting. We prove that the $N$-particle dynamics converges, in the sense of quantum relative entropy, to the tensorized solution of the limiting nonlinear equation. More precisely, we establish explicit bounds of order $1/N$ on the relative entropy between the $N$-particle density operator and the corresponding product state, thereby providing a quantitative propagation of chaos.
