Let \(O\mapsto A(O)\) be a local Haag--Kastler net and let \(A^d(O)=A(O')'\) be its dual net. Normal unital completely positive maps on \(B(H)\) that fix \(A(O')\) pointwise are exactly the channels with Kraus operators in \(A^d(O)\). Thus Haag duality at \(O\) is equivalent to equality with the \(A(O)\)-inner channels, while essential duality is equivalent to order-independence of the corresponding causal-complement channel classes at spacelike separation. For self-adjoint generators \(a\in M\) and \(b\in N\), the small-parameter order defect has coefficient \(\operatorname{diam}σ(-i[a,b])\). Uniform optimization gives \(Γ(M,N)=2Δ_{\mathrm{sa}}(M,N)\), and reversible inner-channel cb balls recover the same invariant through \(\lim_{\varepsilon\downarrow0}Ω^{\mathrm{rev}}_\varepsilon(M,N)/\varepsilon^2=Γ(M,N)/4\). The full inner-channel class admits a normalized coefficient with the same commutativity zero set. With a positive reference observable \(G\), the mean-input-energy-constrained coefficient \(Γ_{G,E}\) has the same zero criterion and increases to \(Γ\) as \(E\to\infty\), while no model-independent recovery rate follows from the general von Neumann-algebraic hypotheses. For bosonic second-quantization nets the spacelike defect is either \(0\) or \(4\); generalized free-field examples realize both branches. In the translation-covariant case with positive one-particle time generator, failure of essential duality admits extremal bounded witness flows that are energy-limited relative to the second-quantized time-translation energy.

Let (O\mapsto A(O)) be a local Haag--Kastler net and let (A^d(O)=A(O')') be its dual net. Normal unital completely positive maps on (B(H)) that fix (A(O')) pointwise are exactly the channels with Kraus operators in (A^d(O)). Thus Haag duality at (O) is equivalent to equality with the (A(O))-inner channels, while essential duality is equivalent to order-independence of the corresponding causal-complement channel classes at spacelike separation. For self-adjoint generators (a\in M) and (b\in N), the small-parameter order defect has coefficient (\operatorname{diam}σ(-i[a,b])). Uniform optimization gives (Γ(M,N)=2Δ_{\mathrm{sa}}(M,N)), and reversible inner-channel cb balls recover the same invariant through (\lim_{\varepsilon\downarrow0}Ω^{\mathrm{rev}}\varepsilon(M,N)/\varepsilon^2=Γ(M,N)/4). The full inner-channel class admits a normalized coefficient with the same commutativity zero set. With a positive reference observable (G), the mean-input-energy-constrained coefficient (Γ{G,E}) has the same zero criterion and increases to (Γ) as (E\to\infty), while no model-independent recovery rate follows from the general von Neumann-algebraic hypotheses. For bosonic second-quantization nets the spacelike defect is either (0) or (4); generalized free-field examples realize both branches. In the translation-covariant case with positive one-particle time generator, failure of essential duality admits extremal bounded witness flows that are energy-limited relative to the second-quantized time-translation energy.
Haag duality is a remarkable property in QFT stating that the commutant of the algebra of observables localized in some region of spacetime is exactly the algebra associated to the causally disconnected region. It is a strong condition on the local structure and has direct consequences on entanglement measures. It was first shown to hold for a free scalar field and causal diamonds by Araki in 1964 and later by many authors in different ways. In particular, Eckmann and Osterwalder (EO) used Tomita-Takesaki modular theory to give a direct proof. However, it is not straightforward to relate this proof to the works of Araki, since they rely on two forms of the canonical commutation relations (CCR), called Segal and Weyl formulations, while EO work as starting point assumes that duality holds in the so-called “first quantization” in the Weyl formulation. It is our purpose to first introduce the works of Araki in a more easy-to-read but still rigorous and self-contained fashion, and show how Haag duality is stated in the Segal and Weyl formulations and in both first and second quantizations (and their immediate combination). This permits to understand the setting of the EO proof of Haag duality. There is nothing essentially new in this manuscript, with the exception of what we consider a simplification of EO proof that uses the adjoint S⁎ of the Tomita operator S instead of introducing several auxiliary operators. We hope this note will be useful for those seeking to understand where Haag duality comes from in a free scalar QFT.
A unit-preserving and completely positive linear map, or a channel, Λ:A→Ain between C*-algebras A and Ain is called entanglement-breaking (EB) if ω◦(Λ⊗idB) is a separable state for any C*-algebra B and any state ω on the injective C*-tensor product Ain⊗B. In this paper, we establish the equivalence of the following conditions for a channel Λ with a quantum input space and with a general outcome C*-algebra, generalizing the known results in finite dimensions: (i) Λ is EB; (ii) Λ has a measurement-prepare form (Holevo form); (iii) n copies of Λ are compatible for all 2 ≤ n < ∞; (iv) countably infinite copies of Λ are compatible. By using this equivalence, we also show that the set of randomization-equivalence classes of normal EB channels with a fixed input von Neumann algebra is upper and lower Dedekind-closed, i.e., the supremum or infimum of any randomization-increasing or decreasing net of EB channels is also EB. As an example, we construct an injective normal EB channel with an arbitrary outcome operator algebra M acting on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space by using the coherent states and the Bargmann measure.
This paper is the second and final part of a two-part study. We construct positive-energy relativistic spatial localization observables in Minkowski spacetime within standard quantum field theory, using the stress--energy--momentum tensor smeared with suitable test functions. For each fixed timelike direction, the construction gives positive operator-valued measures (POVMs) on spacelike hypersurfaces, well defined on every n-particle sector and satisfying a relativistic causality condition excluding superluminal propagation of detection probabilities.
The observables are built from local or quasi-local field-theoretic quantities, thus providing a rigorous version of earlier heuristic proposals. In the one-particle sector, the construction reduces to the observable previously introduced by the author, and its first moment gives the Newton--Wigner position operator under appropriate normalization and centering assumptions.
Because the Reeh--Schlieder theorem prevents the normally ordered stress--energy--momentum tensor from being positive on the full Fock space, we use quantum energy inequalities to obtain lower bounds controlling deviations from positivity. This leads to regularized operator families, bounded from below, which approximate the localization effects.
Finally, we define conditional localization observables for finite laboratories through modified local energy operators. By Haag duality, the corresponding conditional POVMs belong to local von Neumann algebras and commute for causally separated regions, in accordance with the Araki--Haag--Kastler framework. The results show how commutativity of localization observables is recovered for conditional measurements in finite spacetime regions.
Channel--state duality identifies completely positive maps with bipartite states. Its generalisation to von Neumann algebras is known to produce states not on M⊗ˉN but on the tensor product of M with the \emph{opposite} algebra of N, or equivalently with a commutant; returning to N itself requires a transposition, and it has been observed that this step typically fails. We determine exactly when it does not fail. Our main result is that a Choi--Jamiołkowski type isomorphism which is natural in the first algebra exists if and only if the second algebra is ∗-anti-isomorphic to itself. Naturality cannot be dropped: whenever M is anti-isomorphic to itself such an isomorphism exists for trivial reasons, since the order structure of a predual is a Jordan invariant and cannot distinguish an algebra from its opposite. Consequently no such correspondence exists for the type III factors constructed by Connes. We show in addition that the domain admits no description in terms of properties of individual maps: the space of all normal maps with the operator norm is too large, and neither complete boundedness nor complete positivity cuts it down to the right size.
In our previous article [arXiv:2307.12552], we introduced local topological order (LTO) axioms for abstract quantum spin systems which allow one to access topological order via a boundary algebra construction. Using the LTO axioms, we produced a canonical pure state on the quasi-local algebra, which gives a net of von Neumann algebras associated to a poset of cones in Rn. In this article, motivated by [arXiv:2509.23734], we introduce an axiom for LTOs which ensures Haag duality for cone-like regions using Tomita-Takesaki theory. We prove this axiom is satisfied for all known topologically ordered commuting projector models. We thus get an independent proof of Haag duality for the Levin-Wen string net models originally proved in [arXiv:2509.23734]. We also give a reflection positivity axiom for LTOs, connecting to the recent article [arXiv:2510.20662]. We again prove this axiom is satisfied for all known topologically ordered commuting projector models about some Z/2-reflection symmetry.
Given a family of von Neumann subalgebras of a fixed factor, we construct an intrinsic distance d(α, β) := -log(Δ(α, β)/2), defined purely from the supremum of commutator norms between unit-ball elements, with no reference to operator-norm proximity, Lip-norms, or spectral triples. We first determine the metric structure of this invariant: the quasi-triangle inequality d(α, γ) ≤ d(α, β) + d(β, γ) + log 2 holds unconditionally on totally ordered subfamilies A_α ⊆ A_β ⊆ A_γ and fails for non-nested triples, with an explicit M2(C) counterexample using the tracial state, giving a sharp chain-versus-general dichotomy. Our main result is an exponential clustering theorem: if the dynamics is implemented by a positive Hamiltonian with spectral gap γ and unique invariant vector, and if d(θ_s(A_α), A_β) = +∞ for all |s| ≤ τ, then the full connected correlator obeys |ω(AB) - ω(A)ω(B)| ≤ (1 + 2/(πγτ)) e^(-γτ/2) for unit-ball A, B: cluster decomposition emerges from commutator data plus a spectral gap, with no metric input. This upgrades the elementary antisymmetric bound |ω(AB) - ω(BA)| ≤ 2e^(-d(α,β)), which cannot be extended to the symmetric part by commutator methods alone; the pair (d, τ) defines an emergent causal cone on the net. As an application to algebraic quantum field theory, within a Haag–Kastler net satisfying Einstein causality and a causal-faithfulness hypothesis, d(O1, O2) = +∞ if and only if O1 and O2 are spacelike separated. The distance is invariant under every automorphism that permutes the net, in particular under modular flow, and the construction applies to factors of all Murray–von Neumann types, including the Type III1 factors of relativistic quantum field theory.
