A note on Haag duality

Abstract

Haag duality is a remarkable property in QFT stating that the commutant of the algebra of observables localized in some region of spacetime is exactly the algebra associated to the causally disconnected region. It is a strong condition on the local structure and has direct consequences on entanglement measures. It was first shown to hold for a free scalar field and causal diamonds by Araki in 1964 and later by many authors in different ways. In particular, Eckmann and Osterwalder (EO) used Tomita-Takesaki modular theory to give a direct proof. However, it is not straightforward to relate this proof to the works of Araki, since they rely on two forms of the canonical commutation relations (CCR), called Segal and Weyl formulations, while EO work as starting point assumes that duality holds in the so-called “first quantization” in the Weyl formulation. It is our purpose to first introduce the works of Araki in a more easy-to-read but still rigorous and self-contained fashion, and show how Haag duality is stated in the Segal and Weyl formulations and in both first and second quantizations (and their immediate combination). This permits to understand the setting of the EO proof of Haag duality. There is nothing essentially new in this manuscript, with the exception of what we consider a simplification of EO proof that uses the adjoint S⁎ of the Tomita operator S instead of introducing several auxiliary operators. We hope this note will be useful for those seeking to understand where Haag duality comes from in a free scalar QFT.

Spatial Localization of Relativistic Quantum Systems: The Commutativity Requirement and the Locality Principle. Part II: A Model from Local QFT

Valter Moretti

This paper is the second and final part of a two-part study. We construct positive-energy relativistic spatial localization observables in Minkowski spacetime within standard quantum field theory, using the stress--energy--momentum tensor smeared with suitable test functions. For each fixed timelike direction, the construction gives positive operator-valued measures (POVMs) on spacelike hypersurfaces, well defined on every $n$-particle sector and satisfying a relativistic causality condition excluding superluminal propagation of detection probabilities. The observables are built from local or quasi-local field-theoretic quantities, thus providing a rigorous version of earlier heuristic proposals. In the one-particle sector, the construction reduces to the observable previously introduced by the author, and its first moment gives the Newton--Wigner position operator under appropriate normalization and centering assumptions. Because the Reeh--Schlieder theorem prevents the normally ordered stress--energy--momentum tensor from being positive on the full Fock space, we use quantum energy inequalities to obtain lower bounds controlling deviations from positivity. This leads to regularized operator families, bounded from below, which approximate the localization effects. Finally, we define conditional localization observables for finite laboratories through modified local energy operators. By Haag duality, the corresponding conditional POVMs belong to local von Neumann algebras and commute for causally separated regions, in accordance with the Araki--Haag--Kastler framework. The results show how commutativity of localization observables is recovered for conditional measurements in finite spacetime regions.

Spatial Localization of Relativistic Quantum Systems: The Commutativity Requirement and the Locality Principle. Part I: A General Analysis

Valter Moretti

We investigate whether commutativity is necessary to represent relativistic locality for localization observables of relativistic quantum systems in Minkowski spacetime. A well known no-go theorem by Halvorson and Clifton shows that commutativity of localization effects for causally separated regions is incompatible with other seemingly natural assumptions about spatial localization. Since commutativity is taken to represent locality in the Araki-Haag-Kastler framework of QFT, this prompts the question whether it follows from more elementary locality principles of quantum theory. Using Busch's operational analysis in terms of no-signaling and relativistic consistency, we argue that for particle-like systems commutativity is not implied by these principles. Assuming a natural local detectability principle, elementary localization observables are not localized in arbitrarily small spacetime neighborhoods of the relevant spatial regions, but rather in regions containing the entire rest space (a Cauchy surface) on which the measurement is performed. This reflects the particle picture itself, where localization occurs at a unique place on a rest space filled with ideal detectors, and therefore does not directly conflict with the Araki-Haag-Kastler notion of locality. We also show that commutativity and localization can coexist for less idealized localization procedures. To this end, we introduce conditional localization POVMs associated with bounded spatial regions interpreted as laboratories. By the gentle measurement lemma, these observables describe conditional localization probabilities and can, in principle, satisfy commutativity for causally separated laboratories. They may therefore be represented by local observables in the Araki-Haag-Kastler sense. Explicit examples are presented in a second work within local QFT.

Essential Duality and Quantitative Channel Composability in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory

Hassan Nasreddine

Let \(O\mapsto A(O)\) be a local Haag--Kastler net and let \(A^d(O)=A(O')'\) be its dual net. Normal unital completely positive maps on \(B(H)\) that fix \(A(O')\) pointwise are exactly the channels with Kraus operators in \(A^d(O)\). Thus Haag duality at \(O\) is equivalent to equality with the \(A(O)\)-inner channels, while essential duality is equivalent to order-independence of the corresponding causal-complement channel classes at spacelike separation. For self-adjoint generators \(a\in M\) and \(b\in N\), the small-parameter order defect has coefficient \(\operatorname{diam}σ(-i[a,b])\). Uniform optimization gives \(Γ(M,N)=2Δ_{\mathrm{sa}}(M,N)\), and reversible inner-channel cb balls recover the same invariant through \(\lim_{\varepsilon\downarrow0}Ω^{\mathrm{rev}}_\varepsilon(M,N)/\varepsilon^2=Γ(M,N)/4\). The full inner-channel class admits a normalized coefficient with the same commutativity zero set. With a positive reference observable \(G\), the mean-input-energy-constrained coefficient \(Γ_{G,E}\) has the same zero criterion and increases to \(Γ\) as \(E\to\infty\), while no model-independent recovery rate follows from the general von Neumann-algebraic hypotheses. For bosonic second-quantization nets the spacelike defect is either \(0\) or \(4\); generalized free-field examples realize both branches. In the translation-covariant case with positive one-particle time generator, failure of essential duality admits extremal bounded witness flows that are energy-limited relative to the second-quantized time-translation energy.

Entanglement in Algebraic Quantum Field Theories

Grossi, Rafael

There has been some recent interest in applying the techniques of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (AQFT) to entanglement problems in perturbative QFT. In particular, the Hilbert space independence of this formulation makes it particularly interesting in the context of curved spacetimes and the emphasis on the algebra of observables makes the treatment of Bell inequalities in QFT resemble such treatment in non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics. In this work, we present the mathematical structures needed for formulating AQFT in terms of the Haag-Araki-Kastler (HAK) axioms and discuss their implications. Moreover, we discuss the algebraic approach to quantum entanglement in the form of Bell inequalities. We provide an extension of this formulation to general globally hyperbolic spacetimes using the so-called Locally Covariant approach to QFT, which extends the HAK axioms to general spacetimes by means of the Category Theory language.

Local topological order, Haag duality, and reflection positivity

Pieter Naaijkens, David Penneys, Daniel Wallick

In our previous article [arXiv:2307.12552], we introduced local topological order (LTO) axioms for abstract quantum spin systems which allow one to access topological order via a boundary algebra construction. Using the LTO axioms, we produced a canonical pure state on the quasi-local algebra, which gives a net of von Neumann algebras associated to a poset of cones in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this article, motivated by [arXiv:2509.23734], we introduce an axiom for LTOs which ensures Haag duality for cone-like regions using Tomita-Takesaki theory. We prove this axiom is satisfied for all known topologically ordered commuting projector models. We thus get an independent proof of Haag duality for the Levin-Wen string net models originally proved in [arXiv:2509.23734]. We also give a reflection positivity axiom for LTOs, connecting to the recent article [arXiv:2510.20662]. We again prove this axiom is satisfied for all known topologically ordered commuting projector models about some $\mathbb{Z}/2$-reflection symmetry.

An entropic characterization of Haag duality

Ruizhi Liu, Lauritz van Luijk

Motivated by Haag duality in quantum spin systems, we show that Haag duality for a pair of commuting factors generated by increasing sequences of finite-dimensional matrix algebras is equivalent to the asymptotic vanishing of a suitable conditional mutual information. For spin systems, let an annulus separate a finite region from the exterior. Haag duality then holds for a region $A$ if and only if the mutual information of the inner region and the exterior, conditioned on the part of $A$ inside the annulus, vanishes as the outer radius becomes large. As a corollary, assuming a strict area law with subleading corrections, Haag duality holds for single cones, and it holds for unions of two or more disjoint cones precisely when the topological entanglement entropy vanishes. For translation-invariant pure states on spin chains, half-chain Haag duality is equivalent to vanishing entropy density.
