Abstract

We derive a nonperturbative bound on the distance between evolutions of open quantum systems described by time-dependent generators. We show how this result can be employed to provide an explicit upper bound on the error of the rotating-wave approximation in the presence of dissipation and decoherence. We apply the derived bound to the strong-coupling limit in open quantum systems and to the secular approximation used to obtain a master equation from the Redfield equation.

Unified Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan quantum master equation beyond the secular approximation

Anton Sergeevich Trushechkin

Derivation of a quantum master equation for a system weakly coupled to a bath which takes into account nonsecular effects, but nevertheless has the mathematically correct Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan form (in particular, it preserves positivity of the density operator) and also satisfies the standard thermodynamic properties is a known long-standing problem in theory of open quantum systems. The nonsecular terms are important when some energy levels of the system or their differences (Bohr frequencies) are nearly degenerate. We provide a fully rigorous derivation of such equation based on a formalization of the weak-coupling limit for the general case.

Time-Uniform Error Bound for Temporal Coarse Graining in Markovian Open Quantum Systems

Teruhiro Ikeuchi, Takashi Mori

Several approximation procedures, such as the full or partial rotating-wave, time-averaging, and geometric-arithmetic approximations, have been proposed to derive Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) generators from the Born-Markov quantum master equation (e.g., the Redfield equation). Establishing rigorous error bounds for these approximations is of fundamental and practical importance. However, existing bounds face two major limitations: they are highly specific to individual methods, and, more critically, they diverge in the long-time limit, ensuring the accuracy of the derived GKSL generator only in short-time regimes. In this Letter, we resolve both issues by deriving a unified, rigorous error bound for a general class of approximation methods -- termed temporal coarse graining -- that encompasses all aforementioned schemes. Crucially, our error bound is time-uniform. This guarantees that GKSL generators obtained via temporal coarse graining remain accurate for arbitrarily long times, provided the dissipation timescale is significantly longer than the bath correlation timescale.

One bound to rule them all: from Adiabatic to Zeno

Daniel Klaus Burgarth, Paolo Facchi A, Giovanni Gramegna +1 more

We derive a universal nonperturbative bound on the distance between unitary evolutions generated by time-dependent Hamiltonians in terms of the difference of their integral actions. We apply our result to provide explicit error bounds for the rotating-wave approximation and generalize it beyond the qubit case. We discuss the error of the rotating-wave approximation over long time and in the presence of time-dependent amplitude modulation. We also show how our universal bound can be used to derive and to generalize other known theorems such as the strong-coupling limit, the adiabatic theorem, and product formulas, which are relevant to quantum-control strategies including the Zeno control and the dynamical decoupling. Finally, we prove generalized versions of the Trotter product formula, extending its validity beyond the standard scaling assumption.

A mathematical justification to apply the secular approximation to the Redfield equation

Niklas J Jung, Francesco Rosati, Gabriel L. Rath +2 more

Abstract Quantum master equations are widely used to describe the dynamics of open quantum systems. All these different master equations rely on specific approximations that may or may not be justified. Starting from a microscopic model, applying the standard Born and Markov approximations results in the Redfield equation that does not guarantee to preserve positivity. The latter is typically achieved by additionally applying the secular approximation resulting in a quantum master equation in Lindblad form. There are other ways to obtain an equation in Lindblad form, one of which is the recently proposed universal Lindblad equation (ULE). It has been shown that it is in the same equivalence class of approximations as the Redfield master equation although avoiding the heuristic secular approximation (Nathan and Rudner 2020 Phys. Rev. B 102 115109). In this work, we prove that the solutions of the master equation obtained by applying the secular approximation are also obtained by an approximation of the same order as the one performed to obtain the Redfield equation. We hereby provide a mathematical justification for the secular approximation. We show that the result of applying the secular approximation is obtained naturally by applying a self-consistency argument. This shows that the resulting master equation is also in the same equivalence class of approximations as the Redfield master equation and the ULE. We furthermore give numerical considerations about the accuracy of the secular master equation compared to the ULE.

Lindbladian approximation beyond ultraweak coupling

Tobias Becker, Ling-Na Wu, André Eckardt

Away from equilibrium, the properties of open quantum systems depend on the details of their environment. A microscopic derivation of a master equation (ME) is therefore crucial. Of particular interest are Lindblad-type equations, not only because they provide the most general class of Markovian MEs, but also since they are the starting point for efficient quantum trajectory simulations. Lindblad-type MEs are commonly derived from the Born-Markov-Redfield equation via a rotating-wave approximation (RWA). However the RWA is valid only for ultraweak system-bath coupling and often fails to accurately describe nonequilibrium processes. Here we derive an alternative Lindbladian approximation to the Redfield equation, which does not rely on ultraweak system-bath coupling. Applying it to an extended Hubbard model coupled to Ohmic baths, we show that, especially away from equilibrium, it provides a good approximation in large parameter regimes where the RWA fails.
