Abstract

We investigate the diffusive behavior of a quantum particle driven by a correlated Gaussian noise. We derive the analytical solution of the joint probability density function and obtain explicit expressions for the mean square momentum and the mean square displacement.

Quantum Brownian transport in a correlated Gaussian force

Yun Jeong Kang, Seungsik Min, Sung Kyu Seo +1 more

We study a classical system-bath model in which a system particle is linearly coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. In a system subject to white and correlated Gaussian noises, we derive an expression for the joint probability density, and the mean squared values of the system-bath particles are calculated. For white noise, the mean squared values of the system-bath particles exhibit an anomalous time dependence, which is different from that of normal diffusion. In particular, for a correlated Gaussian noise, the mean squared displacement and mean squared velocity of the bath particle show superspreading growths of $t^5$ and $t^3$ in $t{\ll}τ$, respectively. When $τ=0$, the mean squared velocity of a quantum particle under random noise is proportional to $t$, while the mean squared velocity of a bath particle in the presence of correlated Gaussian noise increases in proportion to $t^2$. This anomalous transport phenomenon results from the mixed derivative structure of the master equation, which couples with the transport coordinates in the diffusion dynamics of the relative coordinates. This result shows that the removal of dissipation in the Caldeira-Leggett framework leads to fundamentally different transport mechanisms characterized by non-diffusive quantum diffusion.

Quantum diffusion in a fermionic bath

Sudarson Sekhar Sinha, Debasish Mondal, Bidhan Chandra Bag +1 more

We propose a scheme for quantum brownian motion of a particle in a fermionic bath. Based on the spin coherent-state representation of the noise operators and a canonical thermal distribution of the associated c numbers, we derive a quantum analog of generalized Langevin equation for quantum-mechanical mean position of the particle subjected to an external force field. The approach allows us to map the quantum problem on a classical setting. The quantum dispersion around the mean can be estimated order by order by a set of quantum correction equations up to a desired degree of accuracy for a given nonlinear potential. We derive a quantum diffusion equation for free particle and show that quantization, in general, enhances the mean-square displacement. Increase in temperature leads to suppression of mean-square displacement. The method is based on canonical quantization procedure and may be used for understanding diffusive transport and thermally activated processes in a fermionic bath.

Quantum non-Markovian Langevin equations and transport coefficients

Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, Z. Kanokov, G. G. Adamian +1 more

Quantum diffusion equations featuring explicitly time-dependent transport coefficients are derived from generalized non-Markovian Langevin equations. Generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations and analytic expressions for calculating the friction and diffusion coefficients in nuclear processes are obtained. The asymptotic behavior of the transport coefficients and correlation functions for a damped harmonic oscillator that is linearly coupled in momentum to a heat bath is studied. The coupling to a heat bath in momentum is responsible for the appearance of the diffusion coefficient in coordinate. The problem of regression of correlations in quantum dissipative systems is analyzed.

Quantum Diffusion, Measurement and Filtering

V. P. Belavkin

A brief presentation of the basic concepts in quantum probability theory is given in comparison to the classical one. The notion of quantum white noise, its explicit representation in Fock space, and necessary results of noncommutative stochastic analysis and integration are outlined. Algebraic differential equations that unify the quantum non Markovian diffusion with continuous non demolition observation are derived. A stochastic equation of quantum diffusion filtering generalising the classical Markov filtering equation to the quantum flows over arbitrary *-algebra is obtained. A Gaussian quantum diffusion with one dimensional continuous observation is considered. The a posteriori quantum state difusion in this case is reduced to a linear quantum stochastic filter equation of Kalman-Bucy type and to the operator Riccati equation for quantum correlations. An example of continuous nondemolition observation of the coordinate of a free quantum particle is considered, describing a continuous collase to the stationary solution of the linear quantum filtering problem found in the paper.

Quantum Brownian motion on a lattice

Ping Sheng, Zhao-Qing Zhang

For a quantum particle on a one-dimensional lattice, the dynamics under the influence of a time-dependent, white-noise potential is shown to differ significantly from the classical diffusive behavior. In particular, the square of the distance displaced from origin is proportional to ${\mathit{t}}^{0.5--0.6}$. The origin of this dispersive behavior is traced to the special properties of the force-force correlation function, which integrates to zero and has a magnitude varying as ${\mathit{t}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.5}$. These characteristics are attributed to the continuous spread of the quantum wave packet as well as its interaction with the discrete lattice.

The quantum Lévy walk

Manuel O Cáceres, Marco Nizama

We introduce the quantum Lévy walk to study transport and decoherence in a quantum random model. We have derived from second-order perturbation theory the quantum master equation for a Lévy-like particle that moves along a lattice through scale-free hopping while interacting with a thermal bath of oscillators. The general evolution of the quantum Lévy particle has been solved for different preparations of the system. We examine the evolution of the quantum purity, the localized correlation and the probability to be in a lattice site, all of them leading to important conclusions concerning quantum irreversibility and decoherence features. We prove that the quantum thermal mean-square displacement is finite under a constraint that is different when compared to the classical Weierstrass random walk. We prove that when the mean-square displacement is infinite the density of state has a complex null-set inside the Brillouin zone. We show the existence of a critical behavior in the continuous eigenenergy which is related to its non-differentiability and self-affine characteristics. In general, our approach allows us to study analytically quantum fluctuations and decoherence in a long-range hopping model.
