Abstract

We study a classical system-bath model in which a system particle is linearly coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. In a system subject to white and correlated Gaussian noises, we derive an expression for the joint probability density, and the mean squared values of the system-bath particles are calculated. For white noise, the mean squared values of the system-bath particles exhibit an anomalous time dependence, which is different from that of normal diffusion. In particular, for a correlated Gaussian noise, the mean squared displacement and mean squared velocity of the bath particle show superspreading growths of $t^5$ and $t^3$ in $t{\ll}τ$, respectively. When $τ=0$, the mean squared velocity of a quantum particle under random noise is proportional to $t$, while the mean squared velocity of a bath particle in the presence of correlated Gaussian noise increases in proportion to $t^2$. This anomalous transport phenomenon results from the mixed derivative structure of the master equation, which couples with the transport coordinates in the diffusion dynamics of the relative coordinates. This result shows that the removal of dissipation in the Caldeira-Leggett framework leads to fundamentally different transport mechanisms characterized by non-diffusive quantum diffusion.

Quantum non-Markovian Langevin equations and transport coefficients

Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, Z. Kanokov, G. G. Adamian +1 more

Quantum diffusion equations featuring explicitly time-dependent transport coefficients are derived from generalized non-Markovian Langevin equations. Generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations and analytic expressions for calculating the friction and diffusion coefficients in nuclear processes are obtained. The asymptotic behavior of the transport coefficients and correlation functions for a damped harmonic oscillator that is linearly coupled in momentum to a heat bath is studied. The coupling to a heat bath in momentum is responsible for the appearance of the diffusion coefficient in coordinate. The problem of regression of correlations in quantum dissipative systems is analyzed.

Quantum Brownian Motion in the Caldeira-Leggett Model with a Damped Environment

Lester Buxton, Marc-Thomas Russo, Jim Al-Khalili +1 more

We model a quantum system coupled to an environment of damped harmonic oscillators by following the approach of Caldeira-Leggett and adopting the Caldirola-Kanai Lagrangian for the bath oscillators. In deriving the master equation of the quantum system of interest (a particle in a general potential), we show that the potential is modified non-trivially by a new inverted harmonic oscillator term, induced by the damping of the bath oscillators. We analyze numerically the case of a particle in a double-well potential, and find that this modification changes both the rate of decoherence at short times and the well-transfer probability at longer times. We also identify a simple rescaling condition that keeps the potential fixed despite changes in the environmental damping. Here, the increase of environmental damping leads to a slowing of decoherence.

Flight of a heavy particle nonlinearly coupled to a quantum bath

Mohammad F. Maghrebi, Matthias Krüger, Mehran Kardar A

Fluctuation and dissipation are byproducts of coupling to the ``environment.'' The Caldeira-Leggett model, a successful paradigm of quantum Brownian motion, views the environment as a collection of harmonic oscillators linearly coupled to the system. However, symmetry considerations may forbid a linear coupling, e.g., for a neutral particle in quantum electrodynamics. We argue that the absence of linear couplings can lead to a fundamentally different behavior. Specifically, we consider a heavy particle quadratically coupled to quantum fluctuations of the bath. In one dimension the particle undergoes anomalous diffusion, unfolding as a power-law distribution in space, reminiscent of L\'evy flights. We suggest condensed matter analogs where similar effects may arise.

Steady states of quantum Brownian motion and decomposition of quantum states into ensembles of Gaussian packets having a uniform position variance

Yan Gu

Abstract After replacing the reduced density matrix of a quantum harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a thermal bath by its ‘characteristic function’ (a non-negative definite function defined on the Heisenberg-Weyl group), the master equation of the reduced density matrix can be transformed into a first-order linear partial differential equation of the characteristic function. We derive stationary solutions for the Caldeira–Leggett (CL) master equation as well as for the late-time Hu–Paz–Zhang master equation, and examine the positivity problem for these solutions. In order to illustrate to what extent classical properties of quantum states of the damping oscillator emerge dynamically due to coupling to the environment, we discuss the problem of how and under what conditions a steady state predicted by the CL master equation could be expressed as a statistical mixture of Gaussian packets having a uniform position variance. Similar studies are carried out for the solutions of a Lindblad-form generalization of the CL master equation, where the positivity problem is certainly absent. Our results show that in the low-temperature regime the steady states predicted by the Lindblad-type master equation may depend on the damping strength of the bath and there are cases which may not show Gaussian-packet decomposition.

Quantum diffusion in a fermionic bath

Sudarson Sekhar Sinha, Debasish Mondal, Bidhan Chandra Bag +1 more

We propose a scheme for quantum brownian motion of a particle in a fermionic bath. Based on the spin coherent-state representation of the noise operators and a canonical thermal distribution of the associated c numbers, we derive a quantum analog of generalized Langevin equation for quantum-mechanical mean position of the particle subjected to an external force field. The approach allows us to map the quantum problem on a classical setting. The quantum dispersion around the mean can be estimated order by order by a set of quantum correction equations up to a desired degree of accuracy for a given nonlinear potential. We derive a quantum diffusion equation for free particle and show that quantization, in general, enhances the mean-square displacement. Increase in temperature leads to suppression of mean-square displacement. The method is based on canonical quantization procedure and may be used for understanding diffusive transport and thermally activated processes in a fermionic bath.
