Abstract

We present a rigorous and comprehensive classification of the asymptotic behavior of time-dependent Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equations under the assumption of Hermitian jump operators. Our results apply to a broad class of GKSL equations whose time dependence is assumed to be recurrent, including time-independent, periodic, quasiperiodic, and certain classes of random time dependence. Our main contributions are twofold: first, we establish a criterion for the uniqueness of steady states. The criterion is formulated in terms of the algebra generated by the GKSL generators and provides a necessary and sufficient condition when the generators are analytic functions of time. We demonstrate the utility of our criterion through prototypical examples, including quantum many-body spin chains. Second, we extend the concept of strong symmetry for time-dependent GKSL equations by introducing two distinct forms, strong symmetry in the Schrödinger picture and that in the interaction picture, and completely classify the asymptotic dynamics with them. More concretely, we rigorously uncover that the strong symmetry in the interaction picture is responsible for non-trivial time-dependent steady states, such as coherent oscillations, whereas that in the Schrödinger picture controls the existence of time-independent steady states. This classification not only encompasses established mechanisms underlying non-trivial oscillatory steady states, such as strong dynamical symmetry and Floquet dynamical symmetry, but also reveals symmetry-predicted, time-dependent asymptotic dynamics in a novel class of open quantum systems. Our framework thus provides a rigorous foundation for controlling dissipative quantum systems in a time-dependent manner.

Asymptotic relaxation in quantum Markovian dynamics

Giovanni Di Meglio, Dariusz Chruściński, Koenraad Audenaert +2 more

We investigate the long-time behavior of quantum Markovian dynamics generated by time-dependent Gorini–Kossakowski–Lindblad–Sudarshan (GKLS) master equations. We introduce a notion of weak relaxation and derive sufficient conditions guaranteeing asymptotic independence from the initial state. Our results provide a quantitative extension of the Spohn–Frigerio theorem to time-dependent generators, yielding explicit contraction bounds in terms of the instantaneous steady state and the jump operators. For a class of microscopically derived master equations, we further obtain a graph-theoretic characterization of the aforementioned conditions that directly links the structure of the jump operators to the relaxation properties. The general theory is illustrated by applications to driven finite-level systems, including a detailed three-level example, and is extended to a non-Markovian setting by means of time-local master equations that become of GKLS form at long times. These findings pave the way for the development of a more general theory of relaxation beyond the Markovian case.

Emergent quantum algebras in dissipative time crystals

Joseph Tindall

Strong dynamical symmetries provide an algebraic description of persistent oscillations in open quantum systems governed by the Lindblad equation. For finite-dimensional systems with a full-rank stationary state, such symmetries are necessary and sufficient for non-decaying oscillatory modes to appear in the Liouvillian's spectrum. These modes can be directly constructed by acting on stationary states with the identified symmetry operators. Here we establish an asymptotic counterpart of this algebra for collective spins. Taking a single spin $S$ in a magnetic field, subject to dissipation through linear jump operators, we identify the exact conditions on the field and dissipative couplings under which non-decaying oscillatory modes emerge as $S \rightarrow \infty$. We then write down a simple, closed form for the corresponding `symmetry' operator which can be applied to the steady state to construct these modes, which are eigenvectors of the Liouvillian, with imaginary eigenvalues, up to $O(1/S)$ corrections. A second operator, an emergent conserved quantity, completes the algebra, and its slow relaxation determines how quantum noise selects the stationary state. The construction can be directly extended to a pair of interacting spins sharing a common reservoir, with the resulting quantum algebra making the entanglement during a quench analytically accessible.

On the uniqueness of the steady-state solution of the Lindblad–Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan equation

Davide Nigro

Abstract The aims of this paper are twofold. The first aim is to give a brief review of the most relevant theoretical results concerning the uniqueness of the steady-state solution of the Lindblad–Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan master equation and the criteria which guarantee relaxingness and irreducibility of dynamical semigroups. In particular, we test and discuss their physical meaning by considering their applicability to the characterisation of the simplest open quantum system i.e. a two-level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators at zero temperature. The second aim is to provide a set of sufficient conditions which guarantees the uniqueness of the steady-state solution and its attractivity. Starting from simple assumptions, we derive simple criteria that can be efficiently exploited to characterise the behavior of dissipative systems of spins and bosons (with truncated Fock space), and a wide variety of other open quantum systems recently studied.

Algebraic criteria for complete relaxation in autonomous and periodically driven open quantum systems

Paul Menczel, Kay Brandner

We derive sufficient criteria that guarantee convergence of open quantum system dynamics to a unique long-time state independent of the initial conditions. We refer to this behavior as complete relaxation. Focusing on systems described by Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) master equations on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, our approach uses only elementary mathematical arguments. For autonomous systems, we recover three previously derived relaxation criteria, which can be expressed as algebraic conditions on the Lindblad operators and the Hamiltonian entering the GKSL equation. For periodically driven systems, we obtain a new criterion involving a similar algebraic condition and a local continuity requirement on the time-dependent GKSL generator. This result implies an earlier criterion for complete relaxation formulated in Ref. [J. Phys. A 52, 43LT01 (2019)]. We also discuss implications of our approach for periodically modulated classical master equations, as well as extensions to driven systems without a periodicity constraint.

On the physical meaning of the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad operator

Dieter Schuch, T. Koide

Abstract We present an alternative derivation of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation based on complex Riccati equations and the associated dynamical invariants. Our formulation introduces time-dependent coefficients, which satisfy the constraints imposed by the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relations, as previously discussed by Dekker et al. in the time-independent case. This time dependence may provide new insights and perspectives for extending the framework to non-Markovian systems.

Quantum i.i.d. Steady States in Open Many-Body Systems

Ishii, Takanao, Masahito Ueda

Understanding how a quantum many-body state is maintained stably as a nonequilibrium steady state is of fundamental and practical importance for exploration and exploitation of open quantum systems. We establish a general equivalent condition for an open quantum many-body system governed by the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad dynamics under local drive and/or dissipation to have a quantum independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) steady state. We present a sufficient condition for a system to have a quantum i.i.d. steady state by identifying a set of operators that commute with arbitrary quantum i.i.d. states. In particular, a set of quantum i.i.d. states is found to be an invariant subset of time evolution superoperators for systems that satisfy the sufficient condition. These findings not only identify a class of models with exactly solvable steady states but also lead to a no-go theorem that precludes quantum entanglement and spatial correlations in a broad class of quantum many-body steady states in a dissipative environment.
