A generalization of the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism for completely positive maps between operator algebras is introduced. Particular emphasis is placed on the case of normal unital completely positive maps defined between von Neumann algebras. This generalization is applied especially to the study of maps which are covariant under actions of a symmetry group. We highlight with the example of, e.g., phase-shift-covariant quantum channels the ease of this method in particular in the case of a compact symmetry group. We also discuss the case of channels which are covariant under actions of the Euclidean group of rigid motions in 3 dimensions.
We prove that the topology on the density space with respect to a unital C*-algebra and a faithful induced by the C*-norm is finer than the Bures metric topology. We also provide an example when this containment is strict. Next, we provide a metric on the density space induced by a quantum metric in the sense of Rieffel and prove that the induced topology is the same as the topology induced by the Bures metric and C*-norm when the C*-algebra is assumed to be finite dimensional. Finally, we provide an example of when the Bures metric and induced quantum metric are not metric equivalent. Thus, we provide a bridge between these aspects of quantum information theory and noncommutative metric geometry.
Given the set of words of a given length for a given alphabet, the Hamming metric between two such words is the number of positions where the two words differ. A quantum version of the corresponding Kantorovich-Wasserstein metric on states was introduced in 2021 by De Palma, Marvian, Trevisan and Lloyd. For the quantum version the alphabet is replaced by a full matrix algebra, and the set of words is replaced by the tensor product of a corresponding number of copies of that full matrix algebra. While De Palma et al. work primarily at the level of states, they do obtain the corresponding seminorm (the quantum Hamming metric) on the algebra of observables that plays the role of assigning Lipschitz constants to functions. A suitable such seminorm on a unital C*-algebra is the current common method for defining a quantum metric on a C*-algebra. In this paper we will reverse the process, by first expressing the Hamming metric in terms of the C*-algebra of functions on the set of words, and then dropping the requirement that the algebra be commutative so as to obtain the quantum Hamming metric. From that we obtain the corresponding Kantorovich-Wasserstein metric on states. Along the way we show that many of the steps can be put in more general forms of some interest, notably for infinite-dimensional C*-algebras.
Provided a maximally entangled state vector in
H⊗H, the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism of quantum information theory (or channel/state duality) produces a mapping of
CP(H,K) (completely positive maps of density operators on
H tothose on
K) onto the density operators on
K⊗H, which extends to a unitary map. Here,
H and
K are {finite-dimensional} Hilbert spaces. The nature of this construction, the form of the associated formulas, and the possibility of versions which do not require an entangled vector seed, are illuminated from the perspective of {naturality}, in the sense of Eilenberg and MacLane. There is a unique such correspondence (``Choi map'') natural in both
H and
K which produces density operators on either
L(H,K) (Hilbert-Schmidt inner product) or
K⊗H∗ instead of
K⊗H. In particular, no entangled state input is required. There are no such binatural maps carried on
K⊗H, but those natural in only
K are canonically associated with unitary maps
H→H∗ and derive from the binatural maps. The construction recovers the standard Choi-Jamiolkowski formulae and shows how they express naturality.
In an attempt to propose more general conditions for decoherence to occur, we study spectral and ergodic properties of unital, completely positive maps on not necessarily unital
C∗-algebras, with a particular focus on gapped maps for which the transient portion of the arising dynamical system can be separated from the persistent one. After some general results, we first devote our attention to the abelian case by investigating the unital
∗-endomorphisms of, in general non-unital,
C∗-algebras, and their spectral structure. The finite-dimensional case is also investigated in detail, and examples are provided of unital completely positive maps for which the persistent part of the associated dynamical system is equipped with the new product making it a
C∗-algebra, and the map under consideration restricts to a unital
∗-automorphism for this new
C∗-structure, thus generating a conservative dynamics on that persistent part
Abstract We introduce the notion of smooth parametric model of normal positive linear functionals on possibly infinite-dimensional
W⋆ W ⋆ -algebras generalizing the notions of parametric models used in classical and quantum information geometry. We then use the Jordan product naturally available in this context in order to define a Riemannian metric tensor on parametric models satsfying suitable regularity conditions. This Riemannian metric tensor reduces to the Fisher–Rao metric tensor, or to the Fubini-Study metric tensor, or to the Bures–Helstrom metric tensor when suitable choices for the
W⋆ W ⋆ -algebra and the models are made.
