Abstract

By considering an infinite-dimensional analogue of the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism, we study how to induce metrics on a distinguished subset of the completely positive maps between tracial $C^*$-algebras using seminorms from noncommutative geometry. Under suitable conditions on the these seminorms, we show that the induced metrics will satisfy the quantum information theoretic properties of stability and chaining. Lastly, we show how to generate such metrics from Kasparov exterior products of spectral triples.

The Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism and covariant quantum channels

Erkka Haapasalo

A generalization of the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism for completely positive maps between operator algebras is introduced. Particular emphasis is placed on the case of normal unital completely positive maps defined between von Neumann algebras. This generalization is applied especially to the study of maps which are covariant under actions of a symmetry group. We highlight with the example of, e.g., phase-shift-covariant quantum channels the ease of this method in particular in the case of a compact symmetry group. We also discuss the case of channels which are covariant under actions of the Euclidean group of rigid motions in 3 dimensions.

On the Bures metric, C*-norm, and the quantum metric

Konrad Aguilar, KARINA BEHERA, Tron Omland +1 more

We prove that the topology on the density space with respect to a unital C*-algebra and a faithful induced by the C*-norm is finer than the Bures metric topology. We also provide an example when this containment is strict. Next, we provide a metric on the density space induced by a quantum metric in the sense of Rieffel and prove that the induced topology is the same as the topology induced by the Bures metric and C*-norm when the C*-algebra is assumed to be finite dimensional. Finally, we provide an example of when the Bures metric and induced quantum metric are not metric equivalent. Thus, we provide a bridge between these aspects of quantum information theory and noncommutative metric geometry.

Parametric models and information geometry on W*-algebras

Florio M. Ciaglia, Fabio Di Nocera, Jürgen Jost +1 more

Abstract We introduce the notion of smooth parametric model of normal positive linear functionals on possibly infinite-dimensional $$W^{\star }$$ W ⋆ -algebras generalizing the notions of parametric models used in classical and quantum information geometry. We then use the Jordan product naturally available in this context in order to define a Riemannian metric tensor on parametric models satsfying suitable regularity conditions. This Riemannian metric tensor reduces to the Fisher–Rao metric tensor, or to the Fubini-Study metric tensor, or to the Bures–Helstrom metric tensor when suitable choices for the $$W^{\star }$$ W ⋆ -algebra and the models are made.

Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism(s) and channel/state duality, naturally!

Paul E. Lammert

Provided a maximally entangled state vector in ${\mathcal{H}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$, the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism of quantum information theory (or channel/state duality) produces a mapping of ${\mathsf CP}({\mathcal{H}},{\mathcal{K}})$ (completely positive maps of density operators on ${\mathcal{H}}$ tothose on ${\mathcal{K}}$) onto the density operators on ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$, which extends to a unitary map. Here, ${\mathcal{H}}$ and ${\mathcal{K}}$ are {finite-dimensional} Hilbert spaces. The nature of this construction, the form of the associated formulas, and the possibility of versions which do not require an entangled vector seed, are illuminated from the perspective of {naturality}, in the sense of Eilenberg and MacLane. There is a unique such correspondence (``Choi map'') natural in both ${\mathcal{H}}$ and ${\mathcal{K}}$ which produces density operators on either ${\mathsf L}({\mathcal{H}},{\mathcal{K}})$ (Hilbert-Schmidt inner product) or ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}^*$ instead of ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$. In particular, no entangled state input is required. There are no such binatural maps carried on ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$, but those natural in only ${\mathcal{K}}$ are canonically associated with unitary maps ${\mathcal{H}}\rightarrow{\mathcal{H}}^*$ and derive from the binatural maps. The construction recovers the standard Choi-Jamiolkowski formulae and shows how they express naturality.

Spectral and ergodic properties of completely positive maps and decoherence

Francesco Fidaleo, Federico Ottomano, Stefano Rossi

In an attempt to propose more general conditions for decoherence to occur, we study spectral and ergodic properties of unital, completely positive maps on not necessarily unital $C^*$-algebras, with a particular focus on gapped maps for which the transient portion of the arising dynamical system can be separated from the persistent one. After some general results, we first devote our attention to the abelian case by investigating the unital $*$-endomorphisms of, in general non-unital, $C^*$-algebras, and their spectral structure. The finite-dimensional case is also investigated in detail, and examples are provided of unital completely positive maps for which the persistent part of the associated dynamical system is equipped with the new product making it a $C^*$-algebra, and the map under consideration restricts to a unital $*$-automorphism for this new $C^*$-structure, thus generating a conservative dynamics on that persistent part

The Jamiołkowski Isomorphism and a Simplified Proof for the Correspondence Between Vectors Having Schmidt Number k and k-Positive Maps

Kedar S. Ranade, Mazhar Ali

Positive maps which are not completely positive are used in quantum information theory as witnesses for convex sets of states, in particular as entanglement witnesses and, more generally, as witnesses for states having Schmidt number not greater than k. Such maps and witnesses are related to k-positive maps, and their properties may be investigated by making use of the Jamiołkowski isomorphism. In this article we review the properties of this isomorphism, noting that there are actually two related mappings bearing that name. As a new result, we give a simplified proof for the correspondence between vectors having Schmidt number k and k-positive maps and thus for the Jamiołkowski criterion for complete positivity. Another consequence is a special case of a result by Choi, namely that k-positivity implies complete positivity, if k is the dimension of the smaller one of the Hilbert spaces on which the operators act.
