Abstract

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory (LGT) model with hard-core bosons at half-filling, extending previous studies by including second nearest-neighbor (2NN) interactions. Using matrix product state techniques within the density matrix renormalization group, we compute charge gap, static structure factor, pair-pair correlation functions, and entanglement entropy for various interaction strengths and field parameters. We analyze two representative neatest-neighbor interaction strengths ($V_1$) that correspond to the Luttinger liquid (LL) and Mott insulator (MI) phases in the absence of the 2NN interactions. We introduce the 2NN coupling $V_2$ and investigate its impact on the system. Our results reveal very rich behavior. As the 2NN repulsion increases, in the case of small $V_1$, we observe a direct transition from the LL phase to a charge-ordered insulator (COI) phase with four-site ordering pattern, whereas for large $V_1$, we observe a transition from the MI phase with two-site ordering pattern (previously found with only $V_1$ included), going through an intermediate LL region, and finally reaching the COI regime. Additionally, the inclusion of 2NN interactions enhances charge order and suppresses pair coherence, evidenced by sharp peaks in the structure factor and rapid decay in pair-pair correlators. Our work extends the well-studied phase structure of 1D $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT models and demonstrates the interplay between gauge fields, confinement, and extended interactions.

Confinement induced frustration in a one-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory

Matjaž Kebrič, Umberto Borla, Ulrich Schollwöck +3 more

Abstract Coupling dynamical charges to gauge fields can result in highly non-local interactions with a linear confining potential. As a consequence, individual particles bind into mesons which, in one dimension, become the new constituents of emergent Luttinger liquids (LLs). Furthermore, at commensurate fillings, different Mott-insulating states can be stabilized by including nearest-neighbour (NN) interactions among charges. However, rich phase diagrams expected in such models have not been fully explored and still lack comprehensive theoretical explanation. Here, by combining numerical and analytical tools, we study a simple one-dimensional Z 2 lattice gauge theory at half-filling, where U(1) matter is coupled to gauge fields and interacts through NN repulsion. We uncover a rich phase diagram where the local NN interaction stabilizes a Mott state of individual charges (or partons) on the one hand, and an LL of confined mesons on the other. Furthermore, at the interface between these two phases, we uncover a highly frustrated regime arising due to the competition between the local NN repulsion and the non-local confining interactions, realizing a pre-formed parton plasma. Our work is motivated by the recent progress in ultracold atom experiments, where such simple model could be readily implemented. For this reason we calculate the static structure factor which we propose as a simple probe to explore the phase diagram in an experimental setup.

Constrained many-body phases in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Higgs lattice gauge theory

Alexander Schuckert, Stefan Kühn, Smith, Kevin C. +2 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory coupled to soft-core bosonic matter at unit filling, inspired by the Higgs sector of the standard model. Through a combination of analytical perturbative approaches, exact diagonalization, and density-matrix-renormalization-group simulations, we uncover a rich phase diagram driven by gauge-field-mediated resonant pair hopping and the confinement of single particles. The pair hopping results in a bunching state with superextensive energy and macroscopic particle number fluctuations at strong electric field strengths and weak on-site interactions. The bunching state crosses over into a pair superfluid phase as the on-site interaction increases, characterized by a finite superfluid density and powerlaw-decaying pair correlations. At large on-site interaction strengths and driven by effective interactions induced by the gauge constraint, the superfluid transitions into an incompressible pair Mott insulator phase. At weak field strengths and on-site interactions, we find a plasma-like region, where single bosons exhibit large short-range correlations and the ground state is composed almost equally of states with even and odd local boson occupation. The presence of a bunching state with large number fluctuations, which is difficult to study using classical numerics, motivates experimental realizations in hybrid boson-qubit quantum simulation platforms such as circuit QED, neutral atoms, and trapped ions. Our findings highlight the rich interplay between gauge fields and soft-core bosonic matter.

Pairing in spinless fermions and spin chains with next-nearest neighbor interactions

Lorenzo Gotta, Leonardo Mazza, Pascal Simon +1 more

We investigate the phase diagrams of a one-dimensional lattice model of fermions and of a spin chain with interactions extending up to next-nearest-neighbor range. In particular, we investigate the appearance of regions with dominant pairing physics in the presence of nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Our analysis is based on analytical calculations in the classical limit, bosonization techniques and large-scale density-matrix renormalization group numerical simulations. The phase diagram, which is investigated in all relevant filling regimes, displays a remarkably rich collection of phases, including Luttinger liquids, phase separation, charge-density waves, bond-order phases, and exotic cluster Luttinger liquids with paired particles. In relation with recent studies, we show several emergent transition lines with a central charge c = 3/2 between the Luttinger liquid and the cluster Luttinger liquid phases. These results could be experimentally investigated using highly tunable quantum simulators.

Phase diagram of interacting spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice: A comprehensive exact diagonalization study

Sylvain Capponi, Andreas Martin Läuchli

We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor density-density interactions on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling. Using exact diagonalization techniques of the full Hamiltonian and constrained subspaces, combined with a careful choice of finite-size clusters, we determine the different charge orderings that occur for large interactions. In this regime, we find a two-sublattice N\'eel-like state, a charge modulated state with a tripling of the unit cell, a zigzag phase, and a charge ordered state with a 12-site unit cell we call N\'eel domain wall crystal, as well as a region of phase separation for attractive interactions. A sizable region of the phase diagram is classically degenerate, but it remains unclear whether an order-by-disorder mechanism will lift the degeneracy. For intermediate repulsion, we find evidence for a Kekul\'e or plaquette bond-order wave phase. We also investigate the possibility of a spontaneous Chern insulator phase (dubbed topological Mott insulator), as previously put forward by several mean-field studies. Although we are unable to detect convincing evidence for this phase based on energy spectra and order parameters, we find an enhancement of current-current correlations with the expected spatial structure compared to the noninteracting situation. While for the studied $t\ensuremath{-}{V}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{V}_{2}$ model, the phase transition to the putative topological Mott insulator is preempted by the phase transitions to the various ordered states, our findings might hint at the possibility for a topological Mott insulator in an enlarged Hamiltonian parameter space, where the competing phases are suppressed.

Generic Mott-Hubbard phase diagram for extended Hubbard models without Umklapp scattering

Florian Gebhard, Kevin Bauerbach, Örs Legeza

We determine the ground-state phase diagram for the $1/r$-Hubbard model with repulsive nearest-neighbor interaction at half band filling using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Due to the absence of Umklapp scattering, the phase diagram displays finite regions for the three generic phases, namely, a Luttinger liquid metal for weak interactions, a Mott-Hubbard insulator for dominant Hubbard interactions, and a charge-density-wave insulator for dominant nearest-neighbor interactions. Up to moderate interaction strengths, the quantum phase transitions between the metallic and insulating phases are continuous, i.e., the gap opens continuously as a function of the interaction strength. We conclude that generic short-range interactions do not change the nature of the Mott transition qualitatively.

One-dimensional Z 2 lattice gauge theory in periodic Gauss-law sectors

Vaibhav Sharma, Erich J. Mueller

We calculate the properties of a one-dimensional ${Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory in different Gauss-law sectors, corresponding to different configurations of static charges, set by the orientations of the gauge spins. Importantly, in quantum simulator experiments these sectors can be accessed without adding any additional physical particles or changing the Hamiltonian: the Gauss-law sectors are simply set by the initial conditions. We study the interplay between conservation laws and interactions when the static charges are chosen to form periodic patterns. We classify the different Gauss-law sectors and use the density matrix renormalization group to calculate the ground-state compressibility, density profiles, charge-density-wave order parameters, and single-particle correlation functions as a function of matter density. We find confined and deconfined phases, charge density waves, correlated insulators, and supersolids.
