We compute the phase diagram of a one-dimensional model of spinless fermions with pair hopping and nearest-neighbor interaction, first introduced by Ruhman and Altman, using the density-matrix renormalization group combined with various analytical approaches. Although the main phases are a Luttinger liquid of fermions and a Luttinger liquid of pairs, we also find remarkable phases in which only a fraction of the fermions are paired. In such a case, two situations arise: either fermions and pairs coexist spatially in a two-fluid mixture, or they are spatially segregated leading to phase separation. These results are supported by several analytical models that describe in an accurate way various relevant cuts of the phase diagram. Last, we identify relevant microscopic observables that capture the presence of these two fluids: while originally introduced in a phenomenological way, they support a wider application of two-fluid models for describing pairing phenomena.
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional
Z2 lattice gauge theory (LGT) model with hard-core bosons at half-filling, extending previous studies by including second nearest-neighbor (2NN) interactions. Using matrix product state techniques within the density matrix renormalization group, we compute charge gap, static structure factor, pair-pair correlation functions, and entanglement entropy for various interaction strengths and field parameters. We analyze two representative neatest-neighbor interaction strengths (
V1) that correspond to the Luttinger liquid (LL) and Mott insulator (MI) phases in the absence of the 2NN interactions. We introduce the 2NN coupling
V2 and investigate its impact on the system. Our results reveal very rich behavior. As the 2NN repulsion increases, in the case of small
V1, we observe a direct transition from the LL phase to a charge-ordered insulator (COI) phase with four-site ordering pattern, whereas for large
V1, we observe a transition from the MI phase with two-site ordering pattern (previously found with only
V1 included), going through an intermediate LL region, and finally reaching the COI regime. Additionally, the inclusion of 2NN interactions enhances charge order and suppresses pair coherence, evidenced by sharp peaks in the structure factor and rapid decay in pair-pair correlators. Our work extends the well-studied phase structure of 1D
Z2 LGT models and demonstrates the interplay between gauge fields, confinement, and extended interactions.
We revisit the phase diagram of the dimerized XXZ spin-
21 chain with nearest-neighbor couplings which was studied numerically by Mondal et al. [Phys. Rev. B 106, L201106 (2022)]. The model has isotropic
XY couplings which have a uniform value and
ZZ couplings which have a dimerized form, with strengths
Ja and
Jb on alternate bonds. We find a rich phase diagram in the region of positive
Ja,Jb. We provide a detailed understanding of the different phases and associated quantum phase transitions using a combination of mean-field theory, low-energy effective Hamiltonians, renormalization group calculations employing the technique of bosonization, and numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The phase diagram consists of two Ising paramagnetic phases called
IPM0 and ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$, and a phase with Ising Neel (IN) order; all these phases are gapped. The phases
IPM0 and ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ are separated by a gapless phase transition line $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{a}={J}_{b}\ensuremath{\le}1$---the well-known Tomonaga Luttinger liquid captured by a conformal field theory (CFT) with central charge
c=1. In contrast, there are two phase transition lines separating
IPM0 or the ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ from IN that are described by
c=21 CFTs and correspond to quantum Ising transitions. In fact, the
c=1 line bifurcates into the two
c=21 lines at the point
Ja=Jb=1; the shape of the bifurcation is found analytically using RG calculations. A symmetry analysis shows that
IPM0 is a topologically trivial phase while ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ is a time-reversal symmetry-protected topological phase (SPT) with spin-
21 states at the two ends of an open system. A gap opens in the low-energy spectrum whenever one moves away from one of the phase transition lines; the scaling of the gap with the distance from a transition line is found analytically using the RG method. The numerical results obtained by the DMRG method are in good agreement with the analytical results. Further, we show that useful insights into the nature of the phase diagram of the above Hamiltonian, particularly the SPT as well as the phase transitions, is obtained via Kramers-Wannier duality to a deformed quantum Ashkin-Teller model. Finally, we propose experimental platforms for testing our results.
We investigate the phase diagram of a one-dimensional model of hardcore bosons or spinless fermions with tunable nearest-neighbor interactions. By introducing alternating repulsive and attractive interactions on consecutive bonds, we show that the system undergoes a transition from a bond-ordered (BO) phase to a charge-density wave-II (CDW-II) phase as the attractive interaction strength increases at a fixed repulsive interaction. For a specific interaction pattern, the BO phase exhibits topological properties, which vanish when the pattern is altered, leading to a transition from a topological BO phase to a trivial BO phase through a gap-closing point where both interactions vanish. We identify these phases using a combination of order parameters, topological invariants, edge-state analysis and Thouless charge pumping. By extending our analysis beyond half-filling, we explore the phase diagram across all densities and identify the superfluid (SF) and the pair-superfluid (PSF) phases, characterized by single-particle and bound-pair excitations at incommensurate densities. The proposed model is experimentally realizable in platforms such as Rydberg excited or ultracold atoms in optical lattices, offering a versatile framework to study such interplay between topology and interactions in low-dimensional systems.
We investigate the nature of the quantum phase transition out of density-wave phase in a spinless fermion model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interaction at one-third filling. Using extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations, we show that the transition changes it nature. For weak next-nearest-neighbor coupling the transition is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type, in agreement with bosonisation predictions. For large next-nearest-neighbor repulsion we provide numerical evidences that the transition belongs to the Pokrovsky-Talapov univerality class describing a nonconformal commensurate-incommensurate transition. We argue that the change of the nature of the transition is a result of incommensurability induced by frustration and realized even at zero doping. The implications in the context of the
XXZ chain with next-nearest-neighbor Ising interaction is briefly discussed.
