Abstract

In this manuscript, we introduce an exact expression for the response of a semi-classical two-level quantum system subject to arbitrary periodic driving. Determining the transition probabilities of a two-level system driven by an arbitrary periodic waveform necessitates numerical calculations through methods such as Floquet theory, requiring the truncation of an infinite matrix. However, such truncation can lead to a loss of significant interference information, hindering quantum sensors or introducing artifacts in quantum control. To alleviate this issue, we use the $\star$-resolvent formalism with the path-sum theorem to determine the exact series solution to Schrödinger's equation, therefore providing the exact transition probability. The resulting series solution is generated from a compact kernel expression containing all of the information of the periodic drive and then expanded in a non-harmonic Fourier series basis given by the divided difference of complex exponentials with coefficients corresponding to products of generalized Bessel functions. The present method provides an analytical formulation for quantum sensors and control applications.

Phase and temporal average transition probabilities for a multi-level system in a sinusoidal field

J.V. Moloney, William J. Meath

A previous exact formal and practical solution for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a two-level non-degenerate system in an arbitrarily strong sinusoidal field is transformed for an N-level system to a Floquet form. Using the Floquet form of the solution computationally convenient expressions are obtained for the phase and the phase-long time-averaged induced transition probabilities. The method exploits the time periodicity of the Schrödinger equation and the solution over the initial period of the hamiltonian provides all the information needed to obtain both the unaveraged and the averaged transition probabilities for the system. The method is illustrated by specific examples which are used to discuss some of the temporal features of the multi-photon spectra of two-level systems.

Coherent Control of Two-level Systems with Periodic $N$-Steps Driving Fields

Zhi‐Cheng Shi, Ye‐Hong Chen, Wei Yang Qin +4 more

In this work, we derive the exact solutions of the dynamical equation, which can describe all two-level Hermitian systems driven by periodic $N$-steps driving fields. The solutions are a set of quasi-periodic functions, and the expressions of the amplitudes and phases are obtained in the frequency-domain. Particularly, we develop a general formalism for the effective Hamiltonian without any approximations, and give the validity range according to the transition probability of the micromotion operator. With the guidance of the exact solutions and the effective Hamiltonian, we find that the coherent destruction of tunneling phenomenon, the resonance phenomenon, and the beat-frequency phenomenon can emerge in this system. Finally, some applications are demonstrated in quantum information processing by periodic $N$-steps driving fields.

Two-level systems with periodic N -step driving fields: Exact dynamics and quantum state manipulations

Zhi‐Cheng Shi, Ye‐Hong Chen, Wei Qin +4 more

In this work, we derive exact solutions of a dynamical equation, which can represent all two-level Hermitian systems driven by periodic $N$-step driving fields. For different physical parameters, this dynamical equation displays various phenomena for periodic $N$-step driven systems. The time-dependent transition probability can be expressed by a general formula that consists of cosine functions with discrete frequencies, and, remarkably, this formula is suitable for arbitrary parameter regimes. Moreover, only a few cosine functions (i.e., one to three main frequencies) are sufficient to describe the actual dynamics of the periodic $N$-step driven system. Furthermore, we find that a beating in the transition probability emerges when two (or three) main frequencies are similar. Some applications are also demonstrated in quantum state manipulations by periodic $N$-step driving fields.

Analytical connection between exact and approximate solutions of the periodically-driven two-level system starting from the Heun equation

Pietro Follia, Bassano Vacchini

We investigate and establish an analytic connection between the exact solutions describing the dynamics of a two-level system driven by periodic external fields, focusing on the cases of linear driving and the so-called rotating-wave approximation, or circular driving. In both cases, the exact solutions can be obtained by mapping the Schrodinger equation onto Heun equations: the confluent Heun equation for linear driving and the Heun equation for the rotating-wave case. In particular, we demonstrate a direct analytic connection between the exact solutions for linear driving and those for the rotating-wave case. This result is obtained by analyzing local solutions expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions, which, in the case of the confluent Heun equation, can be derived by considering path-multiplicative Floquet solutions involving a bilateral series. This series leads to two continued-fraction expansions that can be perturbatively solved by imposing a suitable consistency condition. The connection between the linear-driving and rotating-wave solutions is established through a perturbative procedure that allows us to recover not only the rotating-wave approximation itself, but also the correct Stark and Bloch-Siegert shifts, as well as the so-called high-frequency approximation.

Sambe Approach to Floquet-Lindblad Open Quantum Systems

Andriani Keliri, Marco Schirò

We study driven and open quantum systems described by a time-periodic Lindblad master equation. In closed systems, the stroboscopic dynamics can always be described by an effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian; this idea is the basis of Floquet engineering. However, in the presence of dissipation, the existence of an effective time-independent Floquet Lindbladian is not guaranteed due to the non-unitary nature of the evolution. Using Floquet theory, we construct a well-defined time-independent Floquet Lindbladian in an extended Sambe-Liouville space, transforming the initial time-dependent problem to a static and non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem. For harmonic driving, we introduce a matrix continued fraction method to nonperturbatively resum multiphoton processes and construct an effective Floquet Lindbladian acting only on the physical Liouville space. Compared to other high-frequency expansions, this method has the advantage of providing the whole infinite series expansion at once. Using a resolvent formalism, we show how to obtain a spectral Floquet representation of correlation functions of an open quantum system. As an application, we consider a dissipating two-level system in a linearly polarized field and calculate its resonance fluorescence spectrum. Furthermore, we consider a parametrically driven quantum dot with pump and loss for which we calculate its spectral function and current-voltage characteristics.

Analytically Solvable Driven Time-Dependent Two-Level Quantum Systems

Edwin Barnes, S. Das Sarma

Analytical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation describing a driven two-level system are invaluable to many areas of physics, but they are also extremely rare. Here, we present a simple algorithm that generates an unlimited number of exact analytical solutions. We show that a general single-axis driving term and its corresponding evolution operator are determined by a single real function which is constrained only by a certain inequality and initial conditions. Any function satisfying these constraints yields an exact analytical solution. We demonstrate this method by presenting several new exact solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Our general method and many of the new solutions we present are particularly relevant to qubit control in quantum computing applications.
