Unitary equivalence in generalized uncertainty principle theories

Abstract

We analyze the issue of unitary equivalence within Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) theories in the one-dimensional case. For a deformed Heisenberg algebra, its representation in terms of Hilbert space and conjugate operators is not uniquely determined, raising the question of whether different realizations of the same algebra are equivalent and describe the same physics. After proposing a definition of a quantum GUP theory, we establish conditions for unitary equivalence. Using this framework, we rigorously prove that two commonly used representations are unitarily equivalent, specifying the conditions under which this equivalence holds. We demonstrate this equivalence explicitly by providing a unitary map and showing how both GUP formulations yield the same physical results in two examples: the quantum harmonic oscillator and a free-falling particle. Finally, we discuss a case where equivalence fails, suggesting that a generalization of the Stone-von Neumann theorem may not be possible within the GUP framework under our definition of unitary equivalence.

Unitary Equivalence and Physical Equivalence

Laura Ruetsche

This chapter evaluates whether unitary equivalence is an appropriate criterion of physical equivalence for quantum theories that fall outside the scope of the comforting uniqueness results. It describes the Stone-von Neumann and Jordan-Wigner uniqueness results, provides examples of unitarily inequivalent representations, and proposes an alternative to unitary equivalence as a criterion for physical equivalence. The chapter also offers an impressionistic introduction to the rudiments of operator algebra theory.

Quantum gravitational decoherence from Generalized Uncertainty Principle with stochastic deformation parameter.

Eissa Al-Nasrallah, Saurya Das, Fabrizio Illuminati +2 more

Several theories of quantum gravity propose the existence of a minimal measurable length and maximum measurable momentum near the Planck scale. When integrated into the framework of quantum mechanics, such restrictions lead to the generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which is commonly referred to as the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). The GUP has been applied to a plethora of physical models in order to provide further insights on our understanding of the Universe, both in the macroscopic and the microscopic regime. Nevertheless, the corrections related to GUP are expected to be extremely small, which thus renders experimental verification a difficult task. Therefore, phenomenological approaches on a qualitative level are typically addressed with the aim of enhancing our possibility of detecting these tiny effects. Motivated by a recent work on a universal decoherence mechanism stemming from the standard formulation of GUP, we extend the ideas contained therein by considering a more general form of GUP which includes linear and quadratic momentum terms to examine its implications. To achieve such a picture, we equip the deformation parameter appearing in front of all momentum terms with a stochastic nature, so that the effective decoherence mechanism emerges by taking the average over fluctuations. We find that, despite the apparently small differences among the two generalizations of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the consequences at the level of the universal decoherence mechanism they entail is significant, as they predict decoherence times that are completely uncorrelated and distinct.

Generalized uncertainty principle from deformed angular momentum algebra

Ahmad Adel Abutaleb

This work establishes a link between deformed angular momentum operators and modifications of the quantum uncertainty principle. Starting from an algebra in which the standard angular momentum operators are deformed by two parameters, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], we construct the corresponding momentum operators via [Formula: see text] where the radial operator [Formula: see text] is determined by the requirement that the standard momentum operator is recovered in the limit [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]. The resulting commutation relations take the form [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is a position-dependent deformation matrix. This leads to an uncertainty relation [Formula: see text] which is state-dependent, anisotropic and position-dependent. We use the term Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) in its broad sense referring to any modification of the Heisenberg relation motivated by quantum-gravity ideas. However, the model does not yield a fixed minimal length of the kind familiar from conventional GUP models (e.g. [Formula: see text]). In the isotropic, limit the trace of the deformation matrix simplifies the bound to [Formula: see text] which can be considered as a rescaling of the uncertainty constant. Our work thus provides a geometric origin for modified uncertainty relations from symmetry breaking in the rotation group, and offers a framework in which quantum-gravity effects manifest themselves through state- and direction-dependent measurement limits, without necessarily introducing a universal minimal length.

A framework for nonrelativistic isotropic models based on generalized uncertainty principles

André Herkenhoff Gomes

Abstract The existence of a fundamental length scale in nature is a common prediction of distinct quantum gravity models. Discovery of such would profoundly change current knowledge of quantum phenomena and modifications to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle may be expected. Despite the attention given to this possibility in the past decades, there has been no common framework for a systematic investigation of so-called generalized uncertainty principles (GUP). In this work we provide such a framework in the context of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Our approach is based on very few assumptions: there is a fundamental length scale, space isotropy, invariance under parity and time reversal transformations, and symmetricity of the position and momentum operators. We show that simple dimensional analysis allows building a common framework for isotropic models based on GUP (we call those iGUP models). We discuss some popular GUP models in this context after elaborating on relevant theoretical aspects of the framework. At last, we translate current bounds on three often investigated GUP models into bounds on parameters of such common iGUP framework.

QUANTUM MECHANICAL COHERENT STATES OF THE HARMONIC OSCILLATOR AND THE GENERALIZED UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE

KOUROSH NOZARI, Tahereh Azizi

In this paper, dynamics and quantum mechanical coherent states of a simple harmonic oscillator are considered in the framework of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). Equations of motion for the simple harmonic oscillator are derived and some of their new implications are discussed. Then, coherent states of the harmonic oscillator in the case of the GUP are compared with the relative situation in ordinary quantum mechanics. It is shown that in the framework of GUP there is no considerable difference in definition of coherent states relative to ordinary quantum mechanics. But, considering expectation values and variances of some operators, based on quantum gravitational arguments, one concludes that although it is possible to have complete coherency and vanishing broadening in usual quantum mechanics, gravitational induced uncertainty destroys complete coherency in quantum gravity and it is not possible to have a monochromatic ray in principle.

Nonrelativistic quantum mechanics with a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) is examined in $d$-dimensional free particle and harmonic oscillator systems. The Feynman propagators for these systems are exactly derived within the first order of the GUP parameter.
