Abstract

We investigate an interface in the transverse field quantum Ising chain connecting an ordered ferromagnetic phase and a disordered paramagnetic phase that are Kramers-Wannier duals of each other. Unlike prior studies focused on non-invertible defects, this interface exhibits a symmetry that combines Kramers-Wannier transformation with spatial reflection. We demonstrate that, under open boundary conditions, this setup gives rise to a discrete \mathbb{Z}_4 ℤ 4 symmetry, encompassing the conventional \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 Ising parity as a subgroup, while in a closed geometry a non-invertible symmetry emerges. Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation, we map the spin chain onto a solvable quadratic Majorana fermion system. In this formulation, the \mathbb{Z}_4 ℤ 4 symmetry is realized manifestly as a parity-dependent reflection with respect to a Majorana site, in contrast to the conventional reflection which mirrors with respect to the central link of the Majorana chain. Additionally, we construct Majorana strong zero modes that retain the \mathbb{Z}_4 ℤ 4 symmetry, ensure degeneracies of all energy eigenstates, and are robust under generic local symmetry-preserving perturbations of the fermion model, including interactions. Finally, we develop quantum circuit realizations of our model paving the way towards the creation of exact Majorana strong zero modes with digital quantum hardware.

Bosonization and Kramers-Wannier dualities in general dimensions

Lei Su, Ivar Martin

It is well known that the noninteracting Majorana chain is dual to the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model, either through the Jordan–Wigner transformation or by gauging fermion parity. In this correspondence, the minimal translation of the Majorana chain maps to the celebrated Kramers–Wannier (KW) duality of the spin model, with the critical point mapped to the self-dual point. In this work, we generalize this mapping to two and higher dimensions by constructing a unitary equivalence between the parity-gauged fermionic system and a spin system defined on arbitrary polyhedral decompositions of space. Imposing the flatness condition on the gauge field yields a bosonization duality between the original (ungauged) fermionic system and a gauged spin system obeying a Gauss law. The dependence of the Gauss law in the spin system on the Kasteleyn orientation (and the discrete spin structure) of the fermionic system is made explicit. Applying this bosonization to one or two copies of Majorana fermions on translationally invariant lattices, we derive higher-dimensional analogs of KW (self-) dualities in spin systems arising from fermionic minimal translations. The KW (self-) dualities are non-invertible due to projections onto eigenspaces of higher-form symmetries in the associated symmetry operators. The bosonization framework we present is intuitive, general, and systematic, encompassing other known exact bosonization methods while offering a novel approach to establish new connections between fermionic and spin systems in arbitrary dimensions.

Emergent Andreev Reflection from a Lattice Duality Defect

Atsushi Ueda, Tokiro Numasawa, Boris De Vos +1 more

Andreev reflection converts an incoming fermion into an outgoing hole and is usually tied to a superconducting interface. We show that an analogous charge-conjugating boundary condition emerges from a purely lattice duality defect. Starting from a Majorana representation of the transverse-field Ising chain, we construct a folded lattice model in which a boundary Majorana impurity implements a one-site translation of a staggered Majorana chain. In the continuum, this translation becomes a chiral fermion-parity defect: it flips the sign of the only left-moving Majorana mode while leaving the right-moving mode unchanged. When the two Majorana modes are recombined into a complex fermion in the folded geometry, this sign flip becomes the Andreev-like boundary condition. Our lattice formulation gives a microscopic interpretation of the Emery--Kivelson boundary of the two-channel Kondo problem and of Maldacena--Ludwig monopole scattering, while identifying the boundary as the interface between a Kitaev-chain SPT phase and a gapless chain. The same Majorana translation defect also provides a lattice realization of an axial $U(1)_A$-symmetric charge-flip boundary.

1d lattice models for the boundary of 2d "Majorana" fermion SPTs: Kramers-Wannier duality as an exact $Z_2$ symmetry

Robert A. Jones, Max A. Metlitski

It is well known that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases host non-trivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. However, for SPT phases of bosons (fermions) within the cohomology (supercohomology) classification the boundary can be recreated without the bulk at the cost of a non-onsite symmetry action. This raises the question: can one also mimic the boundaries of SPT phases which lie outside the (super)cohomology classification? In this paper, we study this question in the context of 2+1D fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G =Z_2 \times Z^f_2$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective 1d lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1d model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We derive the action of the $Z_2$ symmetry on this Hilbert space and find a simple 3-site Hamiltonian that respects this symmetry. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising CFT where the $Z_2$ symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the 2+1D topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry ${\cal T}$ with ${\cal T}^2 = (-1)^{\cal F}$.

Dissipative Majorana Chain---Anomalies and Non-Invertible Symmetries

Hung-Hsuan Teh, Tokiro Numasawa

We study symmetries and anomalies of dissipative Majorana chains described by Lindblad dynamics. Using the operator-state mapping, we represent the Lindbladian as a non-Hermitian operator on a doubled Hilbert space. In this formulation, the ket and bra contours admit strong fermion parities and strong translations, while their diagonal combinations define weak symmetries. For even and odd chain lengths, we diagnose anomalies by comparing symmetry algebras with and without weak fermion-parity defects. These algebras retain the lattice precursor of the modulo-$8$ anomaly of the closed Majorana chain and exhibit projective relations between strong fermion parity and weak translation, as well as between weak fermion parity and strong translation, which are intrinsic to open quantum systems. We establish the IR correspondence between the lattice symmetry algebras and those of the doubled Majorana CFT in four spin sectors, identifying chiral fermion parities emanated from the lattice translations. Finally, we develop the lattice bosonization of the dissipative chain. For even length with collective energy dephasing, combining the defect and no-defect sectors and imposing GSO projections gives rise to an Ising Lindbladian with non-invertible Kramers--Wannier symmetries descending from the anomalous strong translation and fermion parity of the Majorana chain. For odd length, constructing mutually commuting ket- and bra-sector spin operators instead yields an Ising Lindbladian with a Kramers--Wannier duality defect. Our results provide a controlled framework for extending lattice anomalies and non-invertible symmetries to open quantum systems.

Majorana chain and Ising model - (non-invertible) translations, anomalies, and emanant symmetries

Nathan Seiberg B, Shu-Heng Shao

We study the symmetries of closed Majorana chains in 1+1d, including the translation, fermion parity, spatial parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The algebra of the symmetry operators is realized projectively on the Hilbert space, signaling anomalies on the lattice, and constraining the long-distance behavior. In the special case of the free Hamiltonian (and small deformations thereof), the continuum limit is the 1+1d free Majorana CFT. Its continuum chiral fermion parity (-1)^{F_L} ( − 1 ) F L emanates from the lattice translation symmetry. We find a lattice precursor of its mod 8 ’t Hooft anomaly. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we sum over the spin structures of the lattice model (a procedure known as the GSO projection), while carefully tracking the global symmetries. In the resulting bosonic model of Ising spins, the Majorana translation operator leads to a non-invertible lattice translation symmetry at the critical point. The non-invertible Kramers-Wannier duality operator of the continuum Ising CFT emanates from this non-invertible lattice translation of the transverse-field Ising model.

1d lattice models for the boundary of 2d "Majorana" fermion SPTs: Kramers-Wannier duality as an exact Z2Z_2Z2 symmetry
In this paper, we study this question in the context of 2+1D fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group G=Z2×Z2fG =Z_2 \times Z^f_2G=Z2×Z2f.
