Abstract

We study symmetries and anomalies of dissipative Majorana chains described by Lindblad dynamics. Using the operator-state mapping, we represent the Lindbladian as a non-Hermitian operator on a doubled Hilbert space. In this formulation, the ket and bra contours admit strong fermion parities and strong translations, while their diagonal combinations define weak symmetries. For even and odd chain lengths, we diagnose anomalies by comparing symmetry algebras with and without weak fermion-parity defects. These algebras retain the lattice precursor of the modulo-$8$ anomaly of the closed Majorana chain and exhibit projective relations between strong fermion parity and weak translation, as well as between weak fermion parity and strong translation, which are intrinsic to open quantum systems. We establish the IR correspondence between the lattice symmetry algebras and those of the doubled Majorana CFT in four spin sectors, identifying chiral fermion parities emanated from the lattice translations. Finally, we develop the lattice bosonization of the dissipative chain. For even length with collective energy dephasing, combining the defect and no-defect sectors and imposing GSO projections gives rise to an Ising Lindbladian with non-invertible Kramers--Wannier symmetries descending from the anomalous strong translation and fermion parity of the Majorana chain. For odd length, constructing mutually commuting ket- and bra-sector spin operators instead yields an Ising Lindbladian with a Kramers--Wannier duality defect. Our results provide a controlled framework for extending lattice anomalies and non-invertible symmetries to open quantum systems.

Majorana chain and Ising model - (non-invertible) translations, anomalies, and emanant symmetries

Nathan Seiberg B, Shu-Heng Shao

We study the symmetries of closed Majorana chains in 1+1d, including the translation, fermion parity, spatial parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The algebra of the symmetry operators is realized projectively on the Hilbert space, signaling anomalies on the lattice, and constraining the long-distance behavior. In the special case of the free Hamiltonian (and small deformations thereof), the continuum limit is the 1+1d free Majorana CFT. Its continuum chiral fermion parity (-1)^{F_L} ( − 1 ) F L emanates from the lattice translation symmetry. We find a lattice precursor of its mod 8 ’t Hooft anomaly. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we sum over the spin structures of the lattice model (a procedure known as the GSO projection), while carefully tracking the global symmetries. In the resulting bosonic model of Ising spins, the Majorana translation operator leads to a non-invertible lattice translation symmetry at the critical point. The non-invertible Kramers-Wannier duality operator of the continuum Ising CFT emanates from this non-invertible lattice translation of the transverse-field Ising model.

Liouvillian Non-Invertible Symmetry

Ying-Cheng Yang, Jhen-Dong Lin, Yueh-Nan Chen

Non-invertible symmetries extend conventional symmetries beyond group-like transformations and play an important role in quantum field theory and many-body physics. However, a general framework of non-invertible symmetries in open quantum systems is still lacking. Here, we formulate a general Liouville-space duality framework that extends Hilbert-space non-invertible dualities to open quantum systems. The resulting defect relates Liouvillians with dual Hamiltonian and dissipative parameters and becomes an exact symmetry at self-duality. We apply this framework to the periodic transverse-field Ising chain with two collective Lindblad channels exchanged by Kramers--Wannier (KW) duality. A strong $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry divides Liouville space into four parity sectors, while the defect acts nontrivially only in the even-even sector. At self-duality, the KW defect imposes a momentum-resolved selection rule on Liouvillian Jordan blocks. Modes with different Liouville momenta or KW-defect eigenvalues cannot form a common exceptional Jordan block. For a three-site chain, a global Rényi-2 KW asymmetry dynamically identifies the self-dual conditions. At the same time, the spectral structure exhibits both a semisimple degeneracy and a self-dual exceptional point with a perturbation-selective response. These results extend non-invertible dualities to Markovian quantum dynamics and establish a symmetry-based selection rule for Liouvillian Jordan structures.

Bosonization and Kramers-Wannier dualities in general dimensions

Lei Su, Ivar Martin

It is well known that the noninteracting Majorana chain is dual to the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model, either through the Jordan–Wigner transformation or by gauging fermion parity. In this correspondence, the minimal translation of the Majorana chain maps to the celebrated Kramers–Wannier (KW) duality of the spin model, with the critical point mapped to the self-dual point. In this work, we generalize this mapping to two and higher dimensions by constructing a unitary equivalence between the parity-gauged fermionic system and a spin system defined on arbitrary polyhedral decompositions of space. Imposing the flatness condition on the gauge field yields a bosonization duality between the original (ungauged) fermionic system and a gauged spin system obeying a Gauss law. The dependence of the Gauss law in the spin system on the Kasteleyn orientation (and the discrete spin structure) of the fermionic system is made explicit. Applying this bosonization to one or two copies of Majorana fermions on translationally invariant lattices, we derive higher-dimensional analogs of KW (self-) dualities in spin systems arising from fermionic minimal translations. The KW (self-) dualities are non-invertible due to projections onto eigenspaces of higher-form symmetries in the associated symmetry operators. The bosonization framework we present is intuitive, general, and systematic, encompassing other known exact bosonization methods while offering a novel approach to establish new connections between fermionic and spin systems in arbitrary dimensions.

The Ising dual-reflection interface : Z4 symmetry and Majorana strong zero modes

Juliane Graf, Federica Maria Surace, Marcus Berg +1 more

We investigate an interface in the transverse field quantum Ising chain connecting an ordered ferromagnetic phase and a disordered paramagnetic phase that are KramersWannier duals of each other. Unlike prior studies focused on non-invertible defects, this interface exhibits a symmetry that combines Kramers-Wannier transformation with spatial reflection. We demonstrate that, under open boundary conditions, this setup gives rise to a discrete Z4 symmetry, encompassing the conventional Z2 Ising parity as a subgroup, while in a closed geometry a non-invertible symmetry emerges. Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation, we map the spin chain onto a solvable quadratic Majorana fermion system. In this formulation, the Z4 symmetry is realized manifestly as a parity-dependent reflection with respect to a Majorana site, in contrast to the conventional reflection which mirrors with respect to the central link of the Majorana chain. Additionally, we construct Majorana strong zero modes that retain the Z4 symmetry, ensure degeneracies of all energy eigenstates, and are robust under generic local symmetrypreserving perturbations of the fermion model, including interactions. Finally, we develop quantum circuit realizations of our model paving the way towards the creation of exact Majorana strong zero modes with digital quantum hardware.

Non-invertible defects in generalized Ising models via strange correlator

Aswin Parayil Mana, Yaman Sanghavi

Defects associated with non-invertible symmetries have attracted significant attention in recent years. Among them, Kramers-Wannier (KW) duality defects have been investigated in both classical statistical systems and quantum Hamiltonian models. Aasen et al. analyzed duality defects in the 2D Ising model and in statistical models built from fusion categories, while Koide et al. later constructed a duality defect in 4D lattice gauge theory. In this work, we extend these developments by providing a systematic construction of KW duality defects/KW defects for a broad class of models formulated within the chain complex framework. Our construction employs the strange correlator, an overlap between a topologically ordered state and a product state, to realize these KW defects.

Symmetry of Open Quantum Systems: Classification of Dissipative Quantum Chaos

We develop a theory of symmetry in open quantum systems.Using the operator-state mapping, we characterize symmetry of Liouvillian superoperators for the open quantum dynamics by symmetry of operators in the double Hilbert space and apply the 38-fold internal-symmetry classification of non-Hermitian operators. We find rich symmetry classification due to the interplay between symmetry in the corresponding closed quantum systems and symmetry inherent in the construction of the Liouvillian superoperators. As an illustrative example of open quantum bosonic systems, we study symmetry classes of dissipative quantum spin models. For open quantum fermionic systems, we develop the Z 4 classification of fermion parity symmetry and antiunitary symmetry in the double Hilbert space, which contrasts with the Z 8 classification in closed quantum systems. We also develop the symmetry classification of open quantum fermionic many-body systems-a dissipative generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model described by the Lindblad master equation. We establish the periodic tables of the SYK Lindbladians and elucidate the difference from the SYK Hamiltonians.Furthermore, from extensive numerical calculations, we study its complex-spectral statistics and demonstrate dissipative quantum chaos enriched by symmetry.
