Abstract

It is well known that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases host non-trivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. However, for SPT phases of bosons (fermions) within the cohomology (supercohomology) classification the boundary can be recreated without the bulk at the cost of a non-onsite symmetry action. This raises the question: can one also mimic the boundaries of SPT phases which lie outside the (super)cohomology classification? In this paper, we study this question in the context of 2+1D fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G =Z_2 \times Z^f_2$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective 1d lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1d model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We derive the action of the $Z_2$ symmetry on this Hilbert space and find a simple 3-site Hamiltonian that respects this symmetry. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising CFT where the $Z_2$ symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the 2+1D topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry ${\cal T}$ with ${\cal T}^2 = (-1)^{\cal F}$.

One-dimensional lattice models for the boundary of two-dimensional Majorana fermion symmetry-protected topological phases: Kramers-Wannier duality as an exact Z2 symmetry

We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G={Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective one-dimensional (1D) lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1D model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We derive the action of the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry on this Hilbert space and find a simple three-site Hamiltonian that respects this symmetry. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising conformal field theory where the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the $(2+1)\mathrm{D}$ topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ with ${\mathcal{T}}^{2}={(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{\mathcal{F}}$.

Symmetry-protected topological orders for interacting fermions: Fermionic topological nonlinear σ models and a special group supercohomology theory

Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$, which can all be smoothly connected to the trivial product states if we break the symmetry. It has been shown that a large class of interacting bosonic SPT phases can be systematically described by group cohomology theory. In this paper, we introduce a (special) group supercohomology theory which is a generalization of the standard group cohomology theory. We show that a large class of short-range interacting fermionic SPT phases can be described by the group supercohomology theory. Using the data of supercocycles, we can obtain the ideal ground state wave function for the corresponding fermionic SPT phase. We can also obtain the bulk Hamiltonian that realizes the SPT phase, as well as the anomalous (i.e., non-onsite) symmetry for the boundary effective Hamiltonian. The anomalous symmetry on the boundary implies that the symmetric boundary must be gapless for (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] boundary, and must be gapless or topologically ordered beyond (1+1)D. As an application of this general result, we construct a new SPT phase in three dimensions, for interacting fermionic superconductors with coplanar spin order (which have ${T}^{2}=1$ time-reversal ${Z}_{2}^{T}$ and fermion-number-parity ${Z}_{2}^{f}$ symmetries described by a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}^{T}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$). Such a fermionic SPT state can neither be realized by free fermions nor by interacting bosons (formed by fermion pairs), and thus are not included in the $K$-theory classification for free fermions or group cohomology description for interacting bosons. We also construct three interacting fermionic SPT phases in two dimensions (2D) with a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Those 2D fermionic SPT phases all have central-charge $c=1$ gapless edge excitations, if the symmetry is not broken.

Solvable lattice model for (2+1)D bosonic topological insulator

Yusuke Horinouchi

We construct an exactly sovable commuting projector Hamiltonian for (2+1)D bosonic topological insulator which is one of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases protected by U(1) and time-reversal $\mathbb{Z}_2^T$ symmetry, where the symmetry group is U(1)$\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2^T$. The model construction is based on the decorated domain-wall interpretation of the $E_{\infty}$-page of a spectral sequence of a cobordism group that classifies the SPT phases in question. We demonstrate nontriviality of the model by showing an emergence of a Kramers doublet when the system is put on a semi-infinite cylinder $(-\infty,0]\times S^1$ with an inserted $π$-flux. The surface anomaly manifests itself as a non-onsite representation of the U(1)$\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2^T$ symmetry. Anomaly matching on a boundary is discussed within a simple boundary theory.

Non-invertible SPT, gauging and symmetry fractionalization

Yabo Li, Litvinov, Mikhail

We explicitly realize the Rep($Q_8$) non-invertible symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state as a 1+1d cluster state on a tensor product Hilbert space of qubits. Using the Kramers-Wannier operator, we construct the lattice models for the phases of all the symmetries in the Rep($Q_8$) duality web. We further show that we can construct a class of lattice models with Rep($G$) symmetry including non-invertible SPT phases if they have a dual anomalous abelian symmetry. Upon dualizing, there is a rich interplay between onsite symmetries, non-onsite symmetries, non-abelian symmetries, and non-invertible symmetries. We show that these interplay can be explained using the symmetry fractionalization in the 2+1d bulk SET.

General group super-cohomology theory of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases

Qing-Rui Wang, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

The classification and lattice model construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting fermion systems are very interesting but challenging. In this paper, we give a systematic fixed point wave function construction of fermionic SPT (FSPT) states for generic fermionic symmetry group $G_f=\mathbb{Z}_2^f \times_{\omega_2} G_b$ which is a central extension of bosonic symmetry group $G_b$ (may contain time reversal symmetry) by the fermion parity symmetry group $\mathbb{Z}_2^f = \{1,P_f\}$. Our construction is based on the concept of equivalence class of finite depth fermionic symmetric local unitary (FSLU) transformations and decorating symmetry domain wall picture, subjected to certain obstructions. We will also discuss the systematical construction and classification of boundary anomalous SPT (ASPT) states which leads to a trivialization of the corresponding bulk FSPT states. Thus, we conjecture that the obstruction-free and trivialization-free constructions naturally lead to a classification of FSPT phases. Each fixed-point wave function admits an exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We believe that our classification scheme can be generalized to point/space group symmetry as well as continuum Lie group symmetry.

Gapped boundary of ( 4 + 1 ) d beyond-cohomology bosonic SPT phase

Xinping Yang, Meng Cheng

In this paper we study gapped boundary states of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in (4+1)d, which are characterized by mixed ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$-gravity response, and the closely related phases protected by ${C}_{N}$ rotation symmetry. We show that if $N\ensuremath{\notin}{2,4,8,16}$, any symmetry-preserving boundary theory is necessarily gapless for the root SPT state. We then propose a (3+1)d ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory coupled to fermionic matter as a candidate boundary theory for $N=2,4,8,16$, where the anomalous symmetry is implemented by invertible topological defects obtained from gauging (2+1)d chiral topological superconductors. For the ${C}_{N}$ case, we present an explicit construction for the boundary states for $N=2,4,8,16$, and argue that the construction fails for other values of $N$.
