Abstract

We construct an exactly sovable commuting projector Hamiltonian for (2+1)D bosonic topological insulator which is one of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases protected by U(1) and time-reversal $\mathbb{Z}_2^T$ symmetry, where the symmetry group is U(1)$\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2^T$. The model construction is based on the decorated domain-wall interpretation of the $E_{\infty}$-page of a spectral sequence of a cobordism group that classifies the SPT phases in question. We demonstrate nontriviality of the model by showing an emergence of a Kramers doublet when the system is put on a semi-infinite cylinder $(-\infty,0]\times S^1$ with an inserted $π$-flux. The surface anomaly manifests itself as a non-onsite representation of the U(1)$\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2^T$ symmetry. Anomaly matching on a boundary is discussed within a simple boundary theory.

One-dimensional lattice models for the boundary of two-dimensional Majorana fermion symmetry-protected topological phases: Kramers-Wannier duality as an exact Z2 symmetry

Robert A. Jones, Max A. Metlitski

It is well known that symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases host nontrivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. However, for SPT phases of bosons (fermions) within the cohomology (supercohomology) classification the boundary can be recreated without the bulk at the cost of a non-onsite-symmetry action. This raises the following question: Can one also mimic the boundaries of SPT phases which lie outside the (super)cohomology classification? In this paper, we study this question in the context of $(2+1)$-dimensional $[(2+1)\mathrm{D}]$ fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G={Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective one-dimensional (1D) lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1D model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We derive the action of the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry on this Hilbert space and find a simple three-site Hamiltonian that respects this symmetry. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising conformal field theory where the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the $(2+1)\mathrm{D}$ topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ with ${\mathcal{T}}^{2}={(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{\mathcal{F}}$.

Exactly solvable model for a 4+1D beyond-cohomology symmetry-protected topological phase

Lukasz Fidkowski, Jeongwan Haah, Matthew B. Hastings

We construct an exactly solvable commuting projector model for a ($4+1$)-dimensional ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-symmetry-protected topological phase (SPT) which is outside the cohomology classification of SPTs. The model is described by a decorated domain wall construction, with ``three-fermion'' Walker-Wang phases on the domain walls. We describe the anomalous nature of the phase in several ways. One interesting feature is that, in contrast to in-cohomology phases, the effective ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry on a ($3+1$)-dimensional boundary cannot be described by a quantum circuit and instead is a nontrivial quantum cellular automaton. A related property is that a codimension-two defect (for example, the termination of a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ domain wall at a trivial boundary) will carry nontrivial chiral central charge 4 mod 8. We also construct a gapped symmetric topologically ordered boundary state for our model, which constitutes an anomalous symmetry-enriched topological phase outside of the classification of Chen and Hermele, and define a corresponding anomaly indicator.

1d lattice models for the boundary of 2d "Majorana" fermion SPTs: Kramers-Wannier duality as an exact $Z_2$ symmetry

It is well known that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases host non-trivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. In this paper, we study this question in the context of 2+1D fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G =Z_2 \times Z^f_2$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective 1d lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1d model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising CFT where the $Z_2$ symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the 2+1D topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry ${\cal T}$ with ${\cal T}^2 = (-1)^{\cal F}$.

Full commuting projector Hamiltonians of interacting symmetry-protected topological phases of fermions

Nathanan Tantivasadakarn, Ashvin Vishwanath

Using the decorated domain wall procedure, we construct finite-depth local unitaries that realize fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. This results in explicit full commuting projector Hamiltonians, where ``full'' implies the fact that the ground state as well as all excited states of these Hamiltonians realize the nontrivial SPT phase. We begin by constructing explicit examples of 1+1D phases protected by the symmetry group $G={\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{T}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{F}$, which also has a free fermion realization in class BDI, and by the symmetry group $G={\mathbb{Z}}_{4}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}^{F}$, which does not. We then turn to 2+1D, and construct the square roots of the Levin-Gu bosonic SPT phase, protected by ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{F}$ symmetry, in a concrete model of fermions and spins on the triangular lattice. Edge states and the anomalous symmetry action on them are explicitly derived. Although this phase has a free fermion representation as two copies of $p+ip$ superconductors combined with their $p\ensuremath{-}ip$ counterparts with a different symmetry charge, the full set of commuting projectors is only realized in the strongly interacting version, which also implies that it admits a many-body localized realization.

Exactly solvable model for two-dimensional topological superconductors

Zitao Wang, Shang-Qiang Ning, Xie Chen

In this paper, we present an exactly solvable model for two-dimensional topological superconductors with helical Majorana edge modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. Our construction is based on the idea of decorated domain walls and makes use of the Kasteleyn orientation on a two-dimensional lattice, which was used for the construction of the symmetry protected fermion phase with ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry by Tarantino et al. and Ware et al. By decorating the time-reversal domain walls with spinful Majorana chains, we are able to construct a commuting projector Hamiltonian with zero correlation length ground state wave function that realizes a strongly interacting version of the two-dimensional topological superconductor. From our construction, it can be seen that the ${T}^{2}=\ensuremath{-}1$ transformation rule for the fermions is crucial for the existence of such a nontrivial phase; with ${T}^{2}=1$, our construction does not work.

Commuting projector models for ( 3+1 )-dimensional topological superconductors via a string net of ( 1+1 )-dimensional topological superconductors

Ryohei Kobayashi

We discuss a way to construct a commuting projector Hamiltonian model for a ($3+1$)-dimensional topological superconductor in class DIII. The wave function is given by a sort of string net of the Kitaev wire, decorated on the time-reversal ($T$) domain wall. Our Hamiltonian is provided on a generic three-dimensional (3D) manifold equipped with a discrete form of the spin structure. We will see how the 3D spin structure induces a 2D spin structure (called a ``Kasteleyn'' direction on a 2D lattice) on $T$ domain walls, which makes it possible to define fluctuating Kitaev wires on them. Upon breaking the $T$ symmetry in our model, we find the unbroken remnant of the symmetry, which is defined on the time-reversal domain wall. The domain wall supports the 2D nontrivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase protected by the unbroken symmetry, which allows us to determine the SPT classification of our model, based on the recent quantum field theory argument by Hason, Komargodski, and Thorngren.
