We investigate (1+1)d symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with fusion category symmetries. We emphasize that the UV description of an anomaly-free fusion category symmetry must include the fiber functor, giving rise to a local symmetry action, a charge category and a trivial phase. We construct an ``onsite'' matrix-product-operator (MPO) version of the Hopf algebra symmetry operators in a lattice model with tensor-product Hilbert space. In particular, we propose a systematic framework for classifying and constructing SPTs with non-invertible symmetries. An SPT phase corresponds to a Q-system in the charge category, such that the Q-system becomes a matrix algebra when the symmetry is forgotten. As an example, we provide an explicit microscopic realization of all three
Rep†(D8) SPT phases, including a trivial phase, and further demonstrate the
S3-duality among these three SPT phases.
The Kramers-Wannier transformation of the 1+1d transverse-field Ising model exchanges the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and, at criticality, manifests as a non-invertible symmetry. Extending such self-duality symmetries beyond gauging of abelian groups in tensor-product Hilbert spaces has, however, remained challenging. In this work, we construct a generalized 1+1d Ising model based on a finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra
H that enjoys an anomaly-free non-invertible symmetry
Rep(H). We provide an intuitive diagrammatic formulation of both the Hamiltonian and the symmetry operators using a non-(co)commutative generalization of ZX-calculus built from Hopf-algebraic data. When
H is self-dual, we further construct a generalized Kramers-Wannier duality operator that exchanges the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and becomes a non-invertible symmetry at the self-dual point. This enlarged symmetry mixes with lattice translation and, in the infrared, flows to a weakly integral fusion category given by a
Z2 extension of
Rep(H). Specializing to the Kac-Paljutkin algebra
H8, the smallest self-dual Hopf algebra beyond abelian group algebras, we numerically study the phase diagram and identify four of the six
Rep(H8)-symmetric gapped phases, separated by Ising critical lines and meeting at a multicritical point. We also realize all six
Rep(H8)-symmetric gapped phases on the lattice via the
H-comodule algebra formalism, in agreement with the module-category classification of
Rep(H8). Our results provide a unified Hopf-algebraic framework for non-invertible symmetries, dualities, and the tensor product lattice models that realize them.
It is well known that symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases host nontrivial boundaries that cannot be mimicked in a lower-dimensional system with a conventional realization of symmetry. However, for SPT phases of bosons (fermions) within the cohomology (supercohomology) classification the boundary can be recreated without the bulk at the cost of a non-onsite-symmetry action. This raises the following question: Can one also mimic the boundaries of SPT phases which lie outside the (super)cohomology classification? In this paper, we study this question in the context of
(2+1)-dimensional
[(2+1)D] fermion SPTs. We focus on the root SPT phase for the symmetry group $G={Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Starting with an exactly solvable model for the bulk of this phase constructed by Tarantino and Fidkowski, we derive an effective one-dimensional (1D) lattice model for the boundary. Crucially, the Hilbert space of this 1D model does not have a local tensor product structure, but rather is obtained by placing a local constraint on a local tensor product Hilbert space. We derive the action of the
Z2 symmetry on this Hilbert space and find a simple three-site Hamiltonian that respects this symmetry. We study this Hamiltonian numerically using exact diagonalization and DMRG and find strong evidence that it realizes an Ising conformal field theory where the
Z2 symmetry acts as the Kramers-Wannier duality; this is the expected stable gapless boundary state of the present SPT. A simple modification of our construction realizes the boundary of the
(2+1)D topological superconductor protected by time-reversal symmetry
T with ${\mathcal{T}}^{2}={(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{\mathcal{F}}$.
We construct 2+1-dimensional lattice models of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with non-invertible symmetries and investigate their properties using tensor networks. These models, which we refer to as generalized cluster models, are constructed by gauging a subgroup symmetry
H⊂G in models with a finite group 0-form symmetry
G. By construction, these models have a non-invertible symmetry described by the group-theoretical fusion 2-category
C(G;H). After identifying the tensor network representations of the symmetry operators, we study the symmetry acting on the interface between two generalized cluster states. In particular, we will see that the symmetry at the interface is described by a multifusion category known as the strip 2-algebra. By studying possible interface modes allowed by this symmetry, we show that the interface between generalized cluster states in different SPT phases must be degenerate. This result generalizes the ordinary bulk-boundary correspondence. Furthermore, we construct parameterized families of generalized cluster states and study the topological charge pumping phenomena, known as the generalized Thouless pump. We exemplify our construction with several concrete cases, and compare them with known phases, such as SPT phases with
2Rep((Z2[1]×Z2[1])⋊Z2[0]) symmetry.
We show that the standard 1+1D Z_{2}×Z_{2} cluster model has a noninvertible global symmetry, described by the fusion category Rep(D_{8}). Therefore, the cluster state is not only a Z_{2}×Z_{2} symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase, but also a noninvertible SPT phase. We further find two new commuting Pauli Hamiltonians for the other two Rep(D_{8}) SPT phases on a tensor product Hilbert space of qubits, matching the classification in field theory and mathematics. We identify the edge modes and the local projective algebras at the interfaces between these noninvertible SPT phases. Finally, we show that there does not exist a symmetric entangler that maps between these distinct SPT states.
Self-dualities and the stacking of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are basic operations on quantum many-body systems. For a
Zp one-form symmetry in 3+1d these correspond to the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner duality
S, which is the gauging operation underlying non-invertible duality symmetries, and the stacking of a 1-form symmetry SPT
T. In the continuum, they form a central extension of
PSL(2,Z4) for
p=2, and of
SL(2,Zp) for odd primes
p, whose central elements are invertible theories with purely gravitational response. These central extensions are governed by a twisted, graded generalization of the Witt group of abelian anyon theories, which we determine. For
p=2 the resulting group is the single-qubit Clifford group, with duality and entangler acting as the Hadamard and phase gates. We realize this entire structure microscopically as quantum cellular automata (QCA) acting on a certain local operator algebra associated with a spin lattice Hilbert space on a cubic lattice. Specifically, our local operator algebra is built by starting with all local operators commuting with a
Zp 1-form symmetry, and taking the quotient by all the (local) 1-form symmetry generators. The central elements can always be extended to the full tensor product algebra with a uniquely defined QCA class. For
p=2 they are generated by the non-trivial semion QCA, and for odd prime
p they are generated by the non-trivial
Zp Clifford QCA. Consequently the lattice fusion rules reproduce the continuum ones only up to these QCAs and lattice translations, giving rise to fusion rules refined by QCAs.
