Abstract

The Kramers-Wannier transformation of the 1+1d transverse-field Ising model exchanges the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and, at criticality, manifests as a non-invertible symmetry. Extending such self-duality symmetries beyond gauging of abelian groups in tensor-product Hilbert spaces has, however, remained challenging. In this work, we construct a generalized 1+1d Ising model based on a finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra $H$ that enjoys an anomaly-free non-invertible symmetry $\mathrm{Rep}(H)$. We provide an intuitive diagrammatic formulation of both the Hamiltonian and the symmetry operators using a non-(co)commutative generalization of ZX-calculus built from Hopf-algebraic data. When $H$ is self-dual, we further construct a generalized Kramers-Wannier duality operator that exchanges the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and becomes a non-invertible symmetry at the self-dual point. This enlarged symmetry mixes with lattice translation and, in the infrared, flows to a weakly integral fusion category given by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ extension of $\mathrm{Rep}(H)$. Specializing to the Kac-Paljutkin algebra $H_8$, the smallest self-dual Hopf algebra beyond abelian group algebras, we numerically study the phase diagram and identify four of the six $\mathrm{Rep}(H_8)$-symmetric gapped phases, separated by Ising critical lines and meeting at a multicritical point. We also realize all six $\mathrm{Rep}(H_8)$-symmetric gapped phases on the lattice via the $H$-comodule algebra formalism, in agreement with the module-category classification of $\mathrm{Rep}(H_8)$. Our results provide a unified Hopf-algebraic framework for non-invertible symmetries, dualities, and the tensor product lattice models that realize them.

Non-invertible symmetries and boundary conditions for the transverse-field Ising model

Huan-Qiang Zhou, Qian-Qian Shi

Non-invertible Kramers-Wannier (KW) duality symmetries are constructed for the transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) at the self-dual point under various boundary conditions (BCs), as long as the resultant Hamiltonian commutes with the ${\rm Z}_2$ symmetry operator. This is achieved by introducing extra degrees of freedom into the Hilbert space, in order to turn a non-translation-invariant Hamiltonian in the original Hilbert space into a translation-invariant Hamiltonian in the augmented Hilbert space. One may lift the trivial identity operator, the ${\rm Z}_2$ symmetry operator and the non-invertible KW duality symmetry operator to their counterparts in the augmented Hilbert space, valid for each of four types of toroidal BCs. As it turns out, they yield a lattice version of fusion rules, which bears a resemblance to the Tambara-Yamagami ${\rm Z}_2$ fusion category. Our construction is thus consistent with the basic physical requirement that all possible BCs should yield a converging result in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, the lattice versions of fusion rules, constructed by Seiberg, Seifnashri and Shao [SciPost Phys. \textbf{16}, 154 (2024)], are reproduced for periodic and anti-periodic BCs, but a discrepancy is revealed for duality-twisted BCs.

Quantum phases and transitions in spin chains with non-invertible symmetries

Arkya Chatterjee, Ömer M. Aksoy, Xiao-Gang Wen

Generalized symmetries often appear in the form of emergent symmetries in low energy effective descriptions of quantum many-body systems. Non-invertible symmetries are a particularly exotic class of generalized symmetries, in that they are implemented by transformations that do not form a group. Such symmetries appear in large families of gapless states of quantum matter and constrain their low-energy dynamics. To provide a UV-complete description of such symmetries, it is useful to construct lattice models that respect these symmetries exactly. In this paper, we discuss two families of one-dimensional lattice Hamiltonians with finite on-site Hilbert spaces: one with (invertible) S_3 S 3 symmetry and the other with non-invertible \mathsf{Rep}(S_3) 𝖱 𝖾 𝗉 ( S 3 ) symmetry. Our models are largely analytically tractable and demonstrate all possible spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns of these symmetries. Moreover, we use numerical techniques to study the nature of continuous phase transitions between the different symmetry-breaking gapped phases associated with both symmetries. Both models have self-dual lines, where the models are enriched by so-called intrinsically non-invertible symmetries generated by Kramers-Wannier-like duality transformations. We provide explicit lattice operators that generate these non-invertible self-duality symmetries. We show that the enhanced symmetry at the self-dual lines is described by a 2+1d symmetry-topological-order (SymTO) of type JK_4\boxtimes \overline{JK}_4 J K 4 ⊠ J K ¯ 4 . The condensable algebras of the SymTO determine the allowed gapped and gapless states of the self-dual S_3 S 3 -symmetric and \mathsf{Rep}(S_3) 𝖱 𝖾 𝗉 ( S 3 ) -symmetric models.

Non-invertible symmetries and LSM-type constraints on a tensor product Hilbert space

Nathan Seiberg B, Sahand Seifnashri, Shu-Heng Shao

We discuss the exact non-invertible Kramers-Wannier symmetry of 1+1d lattice models on a tensor product Hilbert space of qubits. This symmetry is associated with a topological defect and a conserved operator, and the latter can be presented as a matrix product operator. Importantly, unlike its continuum counterpart, the symmetry algebra involves lattice translations. Consequently, it is not described by a fusion category. In the presence of this defect, the symmetry algebra involving parity/time-reversal is realized projectively, which is reminiscent of an anomaly. Different Hamiltonians with the same lattice non-invertible symmetry can flow in their continuum limits to infinitely many different fusion categories (with different Frobenius-Schur indicators), including, as a special case, the Ising CFT. The non-invertible symmetry leads to a constraint similar to that of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis, implying that the system cannot have a unique gapped ground state. It is either in a gapless phase or in a gapped phase with three (or a multiple of three) ground states, associated with the spontaneous breaking of the lattice non-invertible symmetry.

Non-invertible defects in generalized Ising models via strange correlator

Aswin Parayil Mana, Yaman Sanghavi

Defects associated with non-invertible symmetries have attracted significant attention in recent years. Among them, Kramers-Wannier (KW) duality defects have been investigated in both classical statistical systems and quantum Hamiltonian models. Aasen et al. analyzed duality defects in the 2D Ising model and in statistical models built from fusion categories, while Koide et al. later constructed a duality defect in 4D lattice gauge theory. In this work, we extend these developments by providing a systematic construction of KW duality defects/KW defects for a broad class of models formulated within the chain complex framework. Our construction employs the strange correlator, an overlap between a topologically ordered state and a product state, to realize these KW defects.

Self-dual $S_3$ gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions

Da-Chuan Lu, Chong Wang, Ashvin Vishwanath

Electric-magnetic self-duality of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory, realized microscopically as a half-lattice-translation exchanging electric charge and magnetic flux, has been an influential example of a duality symmetry with an exact lattice realization. We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the $S_3$ quantum double $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the $\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2$ anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon $C$ and fluxon $F$, is realized via lattice translation. Consequently we find that the zigzag boundary termination of the model realizes, without fine-tuning, a gapless critical edge state described by the tetracritical Ising CFT. The bulk admits three independent $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{em}}$-preserving bosonic perturbations, driving $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ into distinct gapped phases. We analyze these transitions by three independent methods: category-theoretic anyon condensation, microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, and Chern-Simons-Higgs theory, which all agree, yielding a unified picture. These examples motivate a minimal-condensation principle: proliferating a bosonic anyon generically drives condensation of a minimal condensable algebra containing it, with symmetry-related condensates appearing as degenerate vacua that spontaneously break the anyon-permutation symmetry. Our model construction extends to an infinite family of self-dual dihedral quantum doubles $\mathcal{D}(D_{2n})$. Notably, each model is sign-problem-free, opening the door to large-scale numerical exploration of the phases of non-Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs theories.

Non-invertible SPT, gauging and symmetry fractionalization

Yabo Li, Litvinov, Mikhail

We explicitly realize the Rep($Q_8$) non-invertible symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state as a 1+1d cluster state on a tensor product Hilbert space of qubits. Using the Kramers-Wannier operator, we construct the lattice models for the phases of all the symmetries in the Rep($Q_8$) duality web. We further show that we can construct a class of lattice models with Rep($G$) symmetry including non-invertible SPT phases if they have a dual anomalous abelian symmetry. Upon dualizing, there is a rich interplay between onsite symmetries, non-onsite symmetries, non-abelian symmetries, and non-invertible symmetries. We show that these interplay can be explained using the symmetry fractionalization in the 2+1d bulk SET.

Self-dual S3S_3S3 gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions
Electric-magnetic self-duality of the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2Z2 gauge theory, realized microscopically as a half-lattice-translation exchanging electric charge and magnetic flux, has been an influential example of a duality symmetry with an exact lattice realization. We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the S3S_3S3 quantum double D(S3)\mathcal{D}(S_3)D(S3) on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the Z2em\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2Z2em anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon CCC and fluxon FFF, is realized via lattice translation. Consequently we find that the zigzag boundary termination of the model realizes, without fine-tuning, a gapless critical edge state described by the tetracritical Ising CFT. The bulk admits three independent Z2em\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{em}}Z2em-preserving bosonic perturbations, driving D(S3)\mathcal{D}(S_3)D(S3) into distinct gapped phases.
