Abstract

Generating the vortex-state superposition in a matter wave is demanded in many quantum processes such as quantum memory and quantum metrology. Here we report the experimental generation of macroscopic superposition of vortex states in ultracold quantum gases. By transferring an optical vortex-state superposition to the center-of-mass rotational state of ultracold atoms using the Raman coupling technique, we realize two-vortex and three-vortex superposition states in quantum gases, demonstrating the high dimensionality of the vortex state. We show the controllability of the superposition states on the Bloch sphere. The lifetime of the vortex superposition state in quantum gases is as large as 25 ms, about two orders of magnitude longer than the storage time in atomic ensembles. This work paves the way for high dimensional quantum processing in matter waves.

Phase-locking matter-wave interferometer of vortex states

Lingran Kong, Tianyou Gao, Longzhi Nie +5 more

Abstract Matter-wave interferometer of ultracold atoms with different linear momenta has been extensively studied in theory and experiment. The vortex matter-wave interferometer with different angular momenta is applicable as a quantum sensor for measuring the magnetic field, rotation, geometric phase, etc. Here we report the experimental realization of a vortex matter-wave interferometer by coherently transferring the optical angular momentum to an ultracold Bose condensate. We use the angular interference technique to measure the relative phase of two vortex states. For a lossless interferometer with atoms only populating two spin states, the difference between the relative phases in the two spin states is locked to π. We also prove the robustness of this out-of-phase relation, not sensitive to the angular-momentum difference between two vortex states, constituent of Raman optical fields and expansion of the condensate. The experimental results agree well with the calculation from the unitary evolution of wave packet in quantum mechanics. This work opens a new way to build a quantum sensor based on the vortex matter-wave interference.

Interaction of atom with nonparaxial Laguerre-Gaussian beam: Forming superposition of vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates

Anal Bhowmik, Pradip Kumar Mondal, Sonjoy Majumder +1 more

The exchange of orbital angular momentum (OAM) between paraxial optical vortex and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of atomic gases is well known. In this paper, we develop a theory for the microscopic interaction between matter and an optical vortex beyond paraxial approximation. We show how superposition of vortex states of BEC can be created with a focused optical vortex. Since the polarization or spin angular momentum (SAM) of the optical field is coupled with OAM of the field, in this case, these angular momenta can be transferred to the internal electronic and external center-of-mass motion of atoms provided both the motions are coupled. We propose a scheme for producing the superposition of matter-wave vortices using Gaussian and a focused Laguerre-Gaussian beam. We study how two-photon Rabi frequencies of stimulated Raman transitions vary with focusing angles for different combinations of OAM and SAM of optical states. We demonstrate the formation of vortex-antivortex structure and discuss interference of three vortex states in a BEC.

Transfer and Storage of Vortex States in Light and Matter Waves

Zachary Dutton, Janne Ruostekoski

We theoretically explore the transfer of vortex states between atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and optical pulses using ultraslow and stopped light techniques. We find shining a coupling laser on a rotating two-component ground state condensate with a vortex lattice generates a probe laser field with optical vortices. We also find that optical vortex states can be robustly stored in the atomic superfluids for times, in Rb-87 condensates, limited only by the ground state coherence time.

Vortex macroscopic superpositions in ultracold bosons in a double-well potential

Miguel Ángel García-March, Lincoln D. Carr

We study macroscopic superpositions in the orbital rather than the spatial degrees of freedom, in a three-dimensional, double-well system. We show that the ensuing dynamics of $N$ interacting excited ultracold bosons, which, in general, requires at least eight single-particle modes and $(\genfrac{}{}{0pt}{}{N+7}{N})$ Fock vectors, is described by a surprisingly small set of many-body states. An initial state with half the atoms in each well, and purposely excited in one of them, gives rise to the tunneling of axisymmetric and transverse vortex structures. We show that transverse vortices tunnel orders of magnitude faster than axisymmetric ones and are therefore more experimentally accessible. The tunneling process generates macroscopic superpositions only distinguishable by their orbital properties and within experimentally realistic times.

Vortex Phase Qubit: Generating Arbitrary, Counterrotating, Coherent Superpositions in Bose-Einstein Condensates via Optical Angular Momentum Beams

Kishore T. Kapale, Jonathan P. Dowling

We propose a scheme for the generation of arbitrary coherent superpositions of vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) using the orbital-angular-momentum states of light. We devise a scheme to generate coherent superpositions of two such counterrotating states of light using well-known experimental techniques. We show that a specially designed Raman scheme allows for transfer of the optical vortex-superposition state onto an initially nonrotating BEC. This creates an arbitrary and coherent superposition of a vortex and antivortex pair in the BEC. The ideas presented here could be extended to generate entangled vortex states, design memories for the orbital-angular-momentum states of light, and perform other quantum information tasks. Applications to inertial sensing are also discussed.

Arbitrary coherent superpositions of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates via orbital angular momentum of light

Sulakshana Thanvanthri, Kishore T. Kapale, Jonathan P. Dowling

We recently proposed a scheme for the creation of coherent superpositions of vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) using orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of light [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 173601 (2005)]. Here we discuss further technical details of the proposal, provide an alternative, time-reversal-symmetric scheme for transfer of a superposition of OAM states of light to the BEC via a procedure analogous to the traditional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage technique, and discuss an alternative trap configuration conducive for sustaining large charge vortices. Superpositions of OAM states of light, that can be created using the existing experimental techniques, can be transferred to an initially nonrotating BEC via a specially devised Raman coupling scheme. The techniques proposed here open up avenues to study coherent interaction of OAM states of light with matter. The study could also be employed for performing various quantum-information-processing tasks with OAM states of light---including a memory for a quantum state of the initial superposition.
