Abstract

We report on the fabrication and characterization of superconducting magnesium diboride (MgB2) thin films intended for quantum-limited devices based on non-linear kinetic inductance (NLKI) such as parametric amplifiers with either elevated operating temperatures or expanded frequency ranges. In order to characterize the MgB2 material properties, we have fabricated coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission lines and microwave resonators using ≈40 nm thick MgB2 films with a measured kinetic inductance of ∼5.5 pH/□ and internal quality factors Qi≈3×104 at 4.2 K. We measure the NLKI in MgB2 by applying a DC bias to a 6 cm long by 4 μm wide CPW transmission line and measuring the resulting phase delay caused by the current dependent NLKI. We also measure the current dependent NLKI through CPW resonators that shift down in frequency with increased power applied through the CPW feedline. Using these measurements, we calculate the characteristic non-linear current parameter, I*, for multiple CPW geometries. We find values for corresponding current density, J*=12–22 MA/cm2, and a ratio of the critical current to the non-linear current parameter, IC/I*=0.14–0.26, similar to or higher than values for other superconductors such as NbTiN and TiN.

Gain evaluation of a superconducting parametric amplifier using the transmission characteristics of YBCO thin film coplanar waveguides

Ibuki Takahashi, Hisashi Shimakage

Abstract We measured the microwave transmission characteristics of coplanar waveguides (CPWs) fabricated using YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) thin films with DC current biases. Kinetic inductances ( L K ) and nonlinear parameters ( I * ) were evaluated for CPWs with film thicknesses of 20, 50, and 200 nm. The results indicate that the experimental values closely follow the second-order nonlinearity exhibited by the L K . To operate as a superconducting parametric amplifier with a standard gain of 20 dB and a pump power of −10 dBm, we introduced a step-impedance structure into the transmission line. As a result, when using an MgO substrate, the required line length was estimated to be approximately 1.25 m, corresponding to approximately 29 times the wavelength of the CPW.

Kinetic inductance compact resonator with NbTiN micronwires

Ming Yang, Xiaoliang He, Wanpeng Gao +6 more

Nonlinear resonators of superconducting thin-film kinetic inductance have attracted considerable research interest in the fields of detectors, qubits, parametric amplifiers, and more. By tuning the deposition parameters, niobium titanium nitride (NbTiN) films (∼12 nm in thickness) present high resistivity(∼2000 μΩ cm) and large sheet kinetic inductance (∼0.7 nH/□). We designed resonators with NbTiN micronwire as the inductor and aluminum as the capacitor, which result in a high internal quality factor and a Kerr nonlinearity of a few hertz. The radio frequency response of the resonators demonstrates nonlinear behavior similar to that of the cubic Duffing oscillator, including frequency shift and hysteresis region. The kinetic inductance resonator is a promising candidate for high saturation power parametric amplifiers.

Evaluation of kinetic-inductance nonlinearity in a single-crystal NbTiN-based coplanar waveguide

Masanori Takeda, Takafumi Kojima, Atsushi SAITO +2 more

We have developed a kinetic inductance travelling-wave amplifier toward the THz-band operation. In this paper, we discuss the nonlinear kinetic inductance of single-crystal niobium titanium nitride (NbTiN) thin film in response to the application of current to the film. In our calculation, it is found that single-crystal NbTiN films have a large current variation in the kinetic inductance compared with that of polycrystalline NbTiN films. To evaluate the nonlinearity, we fabricated a superconducting coplanar waveguide with a 0.2-m line length and measured the transmittance. We observed a variation of the electrical length of the line caused by the modulation of the kinetic inductance as a function of the value of the current applied to the strip.

Measurements of phase shifts in YBCO transmission lines for evaluation of kinetic inductance change

Reiya Ishida, Tokio Goto, Hisashi Shimakage +1 more

Abstract We fabricated a coplanar waveguide (CPW) using high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) and evaluated its characteristics for the realization of a superconducting parametric amplifier. A YBCO thin film with a film thickness of 200 nm was formed by the PLD method using a YAG laser on a 10 × 10 mm MgO substrate. The YBCO thin films were processed into the CPW shape with a line width of 8 μm, a gap width of 8 μm and a line length of 5 mm by photolithography and sputter etching. Using a network analyzer, phase differences of microwave were measured at dc current bias from 0 mA to 14 mA. From the measurement results, it was found that the phase difference decreased with increasing temperature. In addition, it was found that the phase shifts greatly varied near the superconducting transition temperature at each current bias. We observed a maximum phase difference Δθ of -0.08 rad at a bias current of 14.0 mA, which is the closest to the transition temperature. A parametric gain was estimated to be 0.15 dB from the measured maximum phase difference.

Broadband RF Characterization and Modeling of Superconducting Coplanar Waveguides

Corentin Beilvert, Norman Vivien, Candice Thomas +4 more

We present the RF characterization of 2-µm-wide superconducting coplanar waveguides made of 100-nm-thick niobium (Nb) or niobium nitride (NbN) films fabricated on 200 mm silicon wafers. Measurements of the two-ports S-parameters up to 25 GHz in a 4.7K–14 K temperature range with an added direct current up to 115 mA were done using a cryogenic probe station. With proper RF calibration and de-embedding procedure, both temperature and dc current dependence of the RF superconducting properties are analyzed. We report a kinetic inductance of 0.15 pH/$\square$, a critical current density of 50 MA/cm$^{2}$, and a critical temperature of 8.9 K for Nb as well as 4.27 pH/$\square$, 3 MA/cm$^{2}$, and 13.8 K for NbN. A telegraphist transmission line model taking into account the BCS theory has been developed and the comparison with the measurements is discussed.

Fabrication and Characterization of Superconductive Coplanar Waveguide Resonators

Adem Ergül

The objective of this thesis is to evaluate a generic process for fabrication and characterization of the Superconductive coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators. Superconductive CPW resonators with various lengths and shapes are designed to investigate their electrical and magnetic properties as well as resonance properties and sensitivities. In the first part of thesis, two different models are introduced in order to estimate the nonlinear kinetic inductance of a superconducting CPW resonator. The first model is based on Bean criticalstate model and the second one is based on current dependence of London penetration depth, λL(I). The existence of a shift in resonant frequency, f0, of Superconductive CPW resonator caused by a non-linear kinetic inductance is also shown experimentally. Simulations were carried out to estimate the nonlinear kinetic inductance due to the selfinduced magnetic field penetration. The rest of the thesis is concerned with development of very smooth Aluminum (Al) thin films with RMS (Root Mean Square) roughness ∼ 1 nm and CAD (Computer Aid Design) of superconductive CPW resonators. Experimental investigation of a generic fabrication technique for superconductive CPW resonator is carried out. Many resonators are fabricated with different design parameters, such as centerline or gap width, film thickness and gap capacitors length. The fabrication process is described in detail. Electron Beam Lithography is used to fabricate Nb and Al CPW resonators which are coupled to outer conductors via gap capacitors. We have fabricated GHz frequency CPW resonators with quality factors, Q up to 5× 10.
