Universal entanglement revival of topological origin

Abstract

We investigate the dynamics of entanglement in dissipative fermionic and bosonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) models and discover that they exhibit a revival dynamics of entanglement when the decoherence channel preserves the chiral symmetry. This behavior is only observable in the topological phase, and the visibility of the revival diminishes to zero at the phase boundary. Furthermore, the revival acquires a universal character, meaning that the entire time-evolution profile remains independent of system size, provided that the size exceeds the localization length of the edge modes associated with the topological phase. Our findings suggest that the universal entanglement revival originates from the topological properties of the SSH model. These dynamical properties may be experimentally accessible, for instance, by utilizing photonic quantum computers.

Topological phases and spontaneous symmetry breaking: the revenge of the original Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Polina Matveeva, Dmitri B. Gutman, Sam T. Carr

We study the interplay of spontaneous symmetry breaking and topological properties in interacting one-dimensional models. We solve these models using bozonization and identify topologically non-trivial phases by counting the additional degeneracy (affiliated with the edge modes) of a finite-size system relative to the infinite one. We find even if the mean-field solution is topological, this may not be true when it arises from spontaneous symmetry breaking, including in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. This implies that the original SSH model, as presented by Su, Schrieffer, and Heeger, is topologically trivial, as opposed to its mean-field version. A spinful version, on the other hand, does exhibit a topologically non-trivial phase. In that state, both mean-field solutions are topologically non-trivial and correspond to non-interacting SSH chains in the opposite phases with the winding number $ν=1$. We show that this phase is protected by a chiral symmetry, similar to the non-interacting phases.

Reentrant topological phases and entanglement scalings in moiré-modulated extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model

Guo-Qing Zhang, L. F. Quezada, Shi-Hai Dong

Recent studies of moiré physics have unveiled a wealth of opportunities for significantly advancing the field of quantum phase transitions. However, properties of reentrant phase transitions driven by moiré strength are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the reentrant sequence of phase transitions and the invariant of universality class in moiré-modulated extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. For the simplified case with intercell hopping $w=0$, we analytically derive renormalization relations of Hamiltonian parameters to explain the reentrant phenomenon. For the general case, numerical phase boundaries are calculated in the thermodynamic limit. The bulk boundary correspondence between zero-energy edge modes and entanglement spectrum is revealed from the degeneracy of both quantities. We also address the correspondence between the central charge obtained from entanglement entropy and the change in winding number during the phase transition. Our results shed light on the understanding of universal characteristics and bulk-boundary correspondence for moiré induced reentrant phase transitions in 1D condensed-matter systems.

Dynamics of edge modes in monitored Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models

Giulia Salatino, Gianluca Passarelli, Angelo Russomanno +3 more

We investigate the effect of dissipation on the dynamics of edge modes in the monitored Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. Our study considers both a linear observable and a nonlinear entanglement measure, namely the two-point correlation function and the Disconnected Entanglement Entropy (DEE), as diagnostic tools. While dissipation inevitably alters the entanglement properties observed in the closed system, statistical analysis of quantum trajectories reveals that by protecting the chain's edges from dissipation, it is possible to recover characteristic features analogous to those found in the unitary limit. This highlights the fundamental role of spatial dissipation patterns in shaping the dynamics of edge modes in monitored systems.

Detecting topology through dynamics in interacting fermionic wires

Andreas Haller, Pietro Massignan, Matteo Rizzi

This work describe a dynamical method to characterize one dimensional chiral models, based on the direct observation of time-evolving bulk excitations. The protocol is tested on top of a readily-feasible experimental set-up of an interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain which realizes both topological and symmetry-broken phases.

Topological entanglement properties of disconnected partitions in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Tommaso Micallo, Vittorio Vitale, Marcello Dalmonte +1 more

We study the disconnected entanglement entropy, S^\mathrm{D} S D , of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. S^\mathrm{D} S D is a combination of both connected and disconnected bipartite entanglement entropies that removes all area and volume law contributions and is thus only sensitive to the non-local entanglement stored within the ground state manifold. Using analytical and numerical computations, we show that S^\mathrm{D} S D behaves like a topological invariant, i.e., it is quantized to either 0 0 or 2\log(2) 2 log ( 2 ) in the topologically trivial and non-trivial phases, respectively. These results also hold in the presence of symmetry-preserving disorder. At the second-order phase transition separating the two phases, S^\mathrm{D} S D displays a finite-size scaling behavior akin to those of conventional order parameters, that allows us to compute entanglement critical exponents. To corroborate the topological origin of the quantized values of S^\mathrm{D} S D , we show how the latter remain quantized after applying unitary time evolution in the form of a quantum quench, a characteristic feature of topological invariants associated with particle-hole symmetry.

Quantum Phase Transition and Entanglement in Topological Quantum Wires

Jaeyoon Cho, Kun Woo Kim

We investigate the quantum phase transition of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by inspecting the two-site entanglements in the ground state. It is shown that the topological phase transition of the SSH model is signified by a nonanalyticity of local entanglement, which becomes discontinuous for finite even system sizes, and that this nonanalyticity has a topological origin. Such a peculiar singularity has a universal nature in one-dimensional topological phase transitions of noninteracting fermions. We make this clearer by pointing out that an analogous quantity in the Kitaev chain exhibiting the identical nonanalyticity is the local electron density. As a byproduct, we show that there exists a different type of phase transition, whereby the pattern of the two-site entanglements undergoes a sudden change. This transition is characterised solely by quantum information theory and does not accompany the closure of the spectral gap. We analyse the scaling behaviours of the entanglement in the vicinities of the transition points.
