Quantum Phase Transition and Entanglement in Topological Quantum Wires

Abstract

We investigate the quantum phase transition of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by inspecting the two-site entanglements in the ground state. It is shown that the topological phase transition of the SSH model is signified by a nonanalyticity of local entanglement, which becomes discontinuous for finite even system sizes, and that this nonanalyticity has a topological origin. Such a peculiar singularity has a universal nature in one-dimensional topological phase transitions of noninteracting fermions. We make this clearer by pointing out that an analogous quantity in the Kitaev chain exhibiting the identical nonanalyticity is the local electron density. As a byproduct, we show that there exists a different type of phase transition, whereby the pattern of the two-site entanglements undergoes a sudden change. This transition is characterised solely by quantum information theory and does not accompany the closure of the spectral gap. We analyse the scaling behaviours of the entanglement in the vicinities of the transition points.

Topological phases and entanglement in real space for 1D SSH topological insulator: effects of first and second neighbor-hoppings

Leonardo A. Navarro-Labastida, Francisco A. Domínguez-Serna, F. Rojas

The hybrid atoms-cell site entanglement in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) topological insulator with first and second neighbor hopping in space representation of finite chains is analyzed. The geometrical phase is calculated by the Resta electric polarization and the entanglement in the atomic basis by the Schmidt number. A relation between entanglement and the topological phase transitions (TPT) is given since the Schmidt number has local critical points of maximal entangled (ME) states in the singularities of the geometrical phase. States with second neighbors have higher entanglement than first-neighbors hopping. The general conditions to produce ME hybrid Bell states and the localization-entanglement relation are given.

Thermodynamics and entanglement entropy of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

D. F. Munoz-Arboleda, R. Arouca, C. Morais Smith

Topological phase transitions are found in a variety of systems and were shown to be deeply related with a thermodynamic description through scaling relations. Here we investigate the entanglement entropy, which is a quantity that captures the central charge of a critical model and the thermodynamics of the nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. Although this model has been widely studied, the thermodynamic properties reveal interesting physics not explored so far. In order to analyze the boundary effects of the model, we use Hill's thermodynamics to split the grand potential in two contributions: the extensive one, related to the bulk, and the subdivision one, related to the boundaries. Then, we derive the thermodynamic entropy for both the edges and the bulk, and the heat capacity for the bulk at the topological phase transitions. The latter is related to the central charge when the underlying theory is a conformal field theory, whereas the first reveals the resilience of the topological edge states to finite temperatures. The phase transition between phases that are adiabatically connected with the Hermitian SSH model display the well-known behavior of systems within the Dirac universality class, but the transition between phases with complex energies shows an unexpected critical behavior that signals the emergence of an imaginary time crystal.

Identifying the two-dimensional topological phase transition by entanglement spectrum: a fermion Monte Carlo study

Weilun Jiang, Xiaofan Luo, Bin-Bin Mao +1 more

Abstract Among many types of quantum entanglement properties, the entanglement spectrum provides more abundant information than other observables. Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods could handle the system in one-dimension properly, while in a higher dimension, it exceeds the capacity of the algorithms. To expand the ability of existing numerical methods, we take a different approach via quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. By exploiting the particle number and spin conservation, we realize an efficient algorithm to solve the entanglement spectrum in the interacting fermionic system. Taking the two-dimensional interacting Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model as an example, we verify the existence of topological phase transition under different types of many-body interactions. The calculated particle number distribution and wavefunction of the entanglement Hamiltonian indicate that the two belong to distinct types of topological phase transitions.

Detection of topological phases by quasilocal operators

Wing Chi Yu, Pedro D Sacramento, Yanchao Li +2 more

It was proposed recently by some of the authors that the quantum phase transition of a topological insulator like the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model may be detected by the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix. Here we further extend the scheme of identifying the order parameters by considering the SSH model with the addition of triplet superconductivity. This model has a rich phase diagram due to the competition of the SSH ``order'' and the Kitaev ``order,'' which requires the introduction of four order parameters to describe the various topological phases. We show how these order parameters can be expressed simply as averages of projection operators on the ground state at certain points deep in each phase and how one can simply obtain the phase boundaries. A scaling analysis in the vicinity of the transition lines is consistent with the quantum Ising universality class.

Topological marker approach to an interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Pedro B. Melo, Sebastião dos Anjos Sousa-Júnior, Wei Chen +2 more

The topological properties of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in the presence of nearest-neighbor interaction are investigated by means of a topological marker, generalized from a noninteracting one by utilizing the single-particle Green's function of the many-body ground state. We find that despite the marker not being perfectly quantized in the presence of interactions, it always remains finite in the topologically nontrivial phase while converging to zero in the trivial phase when approaching the thermodynamic limit, and hence correctly judges the topological phases in the presence of interactions. The marker also correctly captures the interaction-driven, second-order phase transitions between a topological phase and a Landau-ordered phase, which is a charge-density wave order in our model with a local-order parameter, as confirmed by the calculation of entanglement entropy and the many-body Zak phase. Our paper thus points to the possibility of generalizing topological markers to interacting systems through Green's function, which may be feasible for topological insulators in any dimension and symmetry class.
