Abstract

In this work, we precisely measure the transition energies between the Rydberg state n$\text{D}_{5/2}$ to the nearby Rydberg states $(\e{n}+2)\text{P}_{3/2}$, $(\e{n}-2)\text{F}_{7/2}$ for the range $41\leq \e{n}\leq46$. This was done by carrying out microwave spectroscopy via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in a room temperature vapor reference cell of Rubidium, which is similar to the experimental approach followed by Li et al. [Results in Physics \textbf{29}, 104728 (2021)]. This range is interesting because there is a quasi Förster resonance between the atomic pair $43\text{D}_{5/2}+43\text{D}_{5/2}$ and $45\text{P}_{3/2}+41\text{F}_{7/2}$. We compared the obtained results with numerically calculated transition energies based on previously tabulated quantum defect numbers by various research groups using both hot and ultra-cold atomic samples. Our data are more consistent with measurements made within ultra-cold atomic systems [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{67}, 052502 (2003), Phys. Rev. A \textbf{74}, 054502 (2006)].

Measurement of the quantum defects of 85Rb P and F-series via microwave-assisted electromagnetically induced transparency spectroscopy

Shaohua Li, Jinpeng Yuan, Lirong Wang +2 more

We report the measurement of the quantum defects of 85Rb P3/2 and F7/2-series Rydberg levels in a room temperature vapor cell by microwave-assisted electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectroscopy. First, a novel microwave optical three-photon excitation method is employed to obtain the microwave-assisted EIT spectroscopy of the 5S1/2 − 5P3/2 – nD5/2 – (n+1)P3/2 or (n-1)F7/2 transition. Next, the Stark shifts of the corresponding Rydberg states relative to the Rabi frequency of microwave field are measured with high accuracy. Finally, the quantum defects, δ0 = 2.64142(15), δ2 = 0.295 for P3/2-series, and δ0 = 0.016411(16), δ2 = -0.0784 for F7/2-series, are forcibly extracted by the modified Rydberg-Ritz formula. This result can serve as a check on advanced theoretical calculations and promote the application of quantum simulations and quantum sensors in atomic ensembles.

Electromagnetically-induced-transparency spectroscopy of high-lying Rydberg states in K39

Yuqi Zhu, Sumita Ghosh, S. B. Cahn +3 more

We present a study of the Rydberg spectrum in $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ for $nS$ and $n{D}_{3/2}$ series connected to $5{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ using two-photon spectroscopy based on electromagnetically induced transparency in a heated vapor cell. We observed some 80 transitions from $5{P}_{1/2}$ to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers $n\ensuremath{\sim}50--90$, and determined their transition frequencies and state energies with sub-GHz precision. Our spectroscopy results lay the groundwork for using Rydberg atoms as sensitive microwave photon detectors in searches for dark matter axions in the $\ensuremath{\sim}40--200 \ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{eV}$ mass range, which is a prime range for future axion searches suggested by theory studies.

Microwave transitions of pairs of cold Rb Rydberg atoms as Forster resonances of Floquet states

Jeonghun Lee, Javed Iqbal, Thomas F. Gallagher

Previous measurements of single photon $n{d}_{5/2}n{d}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(n+1){d}_{j}(n\ensuremath{-}2)f$ transitions by two of us were described as microwave transitions made possible by configuration interaction (CI) between the $n{d}_{5/2}n{d}_{5/2}$ and the nearly degenerate $(n+2){p}_{3/2}(n\ensuremath{-}2)f$ states [Lee and Gallagher, Phys. Rev. A 93, 062509 (2016)]. Here we report the observation of the one photon $n{d}_{5/2}n{d}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(n+3){s}_{1/2}(n\ensuremath{-}2)f$, two photon $n{d}_{5/2}n{d}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(n+3){p}_{j}(n\ensuremath{-}2)f$, and three photon $n{d}_{5/2}n{d}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(n+4){s}_{1/2}(n\ensuremath{-}2)f$ microwave transitions. We show that both single and multiphoton microwave transitions are conveniently described as Forster resonant energy transfers between resonant Floquet states, and we show that the Floquet-Forster model reduces to the CI model used previously. Finally, to show that the transitions observed previously are by no means unique, we report pair transitions with different initial and final states as well as radio instead of microwave frequencies.

Measurement and numerical calculation of Rubidium Rydberg Stark spectra

Jens Grimmel, Markus Mack, Florian Karlewski +4 more

We report on the measurement of Stark shifted energy levels of 87 Rb Rydberg atoms in static electric fields by means of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Electric field strengths of up to 500 V cm −1 , ranging beyond the classical ionization threshold, were applied using electrodes inside a glass cell with rubidium vapour. Stark maps for principal quantum numbers n = 35 and n = 70 have been obtained with high signal-to-noise ratio for comparison with results from ab initio calculations following the method described in (Zimmerman et al 1979 Phys. Rev. A 20 2251 ), which was originally only verified for states around n = 15. We also calculate the dipole matrix elements between low-lying states and Stark shifted Rydberg states to give a theoretical estimate of the relative strength of the EIT signal. The present work significantly extends the experimental verification of this numerical method in the range of both high principal quantum numbers and high electric fields with an accuracy of up to 2 MHz.

Measurement of absolute transition frequencies of Rb87 to nS and nD Rydberg states by means of electromagnetically induced transparency

Markus Mack, Florian Karlewski, H. Hattermann +4 more

We report the measurement of absolute excitation frequencies of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ to $nS$ and $nD$ Rydberg states. The Rydberg transition frequencies are obtained by observing electromagnetically induced transparency on a rubidium vapor cell. The accuracy of the measurement of each state is $\ensuremath{\lesssim}$1 MHz, which is achieved by frequency stabilizing the two diode lasers employed for the spectroscopy to a frequency comb and a frequency comb calibrated wavelength meter, respectively. Based on the spectroscopic data we determine the quantum defects of ${}^{87}\text{Rb}$, and compare it with previous measurements on ${}^{85}\text{Rb}$. We determine the ionization frequency from the $5{S}_{1/2}(F=1)$ ground state of ${}^{87}\text{Rb}$ to $1010.029 164 6(3)\mathrm{THz}$, providing the binding energy of the ground state with an accuracy improved by two orders of magnitude.
