Abstract

This article theoretically proposes a multi-layer Fabry-Perot cavity structure based on nonlinear MoS2, whose cavity is composed of asymmetric photonic crystals. In this structure, we observed a low threshold optical bistability phenomenon on the order of a in the visible light band, which is caused by the large third-order nonlinear conductivity of the bilayer MoS2 and the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance. Research has found that when light is incident from two different directions in an asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity, the optical bistability exhibits not exactly the same behavior. In addition, we further investigated and found that the optical bistability behavior in this simple multi-layer structure is closely related to parameters such as incident wavelength, Fabry-Perot cavity length, and refractive index of the photonic crystal dielectric. This work provides a new approach for the implementation of low threshold optical bistable devices in the visible light band, which is expected to be applied in nonlinear optical fields such as all optical switches and all optical logic devices.

Optical bistability in semiconductor periodic structures

Jian‐Jun He, Michael Čada

A theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices is presented. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in this case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.>

Optical bistable behavior involving photonic crystals nonlinear cavity

K. F. Deng, Du Fang Shi

We present an analytical model and numerical experiments to describe optimal bistable switching involving photonic crystals nonlinear cavity. The involving photonic crystals nonlinear cavity is particularly suitable for large-scale all-optical integration. It is interesting to show that the refractive index of the system can be altered by the incident intensity when the incident frequency is tuned to the evanescent mode and the cavity contains a nonlinear Kerr medium. The response of this system to high-intensity incident waves is studied in detail. A cavity host a localized mode at 1.55 um with a Q of 4000 and a mode volume of 0.055 um3, we predict the onset of bistable reflection at incident powers of ~40 mW. The downstream reflections lead to hysteresis loops in the reflectivity that are topologically distinct from conventional Lorentzian-derived loops characteristic of isolated Fabry-Perot cavities. We provide a stability argument that reveals the unstable branches of these unique hysteresis loops, and we illustrate some of the rich bistable behaviors that can be engineered with such downstream sources, this fact may be used to obtain more flexibility in designing nonlinear devices.

Controllable optical bistability in a Fabry–Pérot cavity with a nonlinear three-dimensional Dirac semimetal

Hong-Xia 红霞 Yuan 袁, Jia-Xue 佳雪 Li 李, Qi-Jun 奇军 Ma 马 +5 more

Optical bistability (OB) is capable of rapidly and reversibly transforming a parameter of an optical signal from one state to another, and homologous nonlinear optical bistable devices are core components of high-speed all-optical communication and all-optical networks. In this paper, we theoretically investigated the controllable OB from a Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity with a nonlinear three-dimensional Dirac semimetal (3D DSM) in the terahertz band. The OB stems from the third-order nonlinear bulk conductivity of the 3D DSM and the resonance mode has a positive effect on the generation of OB. This FP cavity structure is able to tune the OB because the transmittance and the reflectance can be modulated by the Fermi energy of the 3D DSM. We believe that this FP cavity configuration could provide a reference concept for realizing tunable bistable devices.

Bistability of Nonlinear Fabry-Perot Cavity

Song Jun

The bistability of vertical microcavity MQW structure is studied using transfer matrix method.Calculation results show that it is much easier to produce bistable states when the material with higher refractive index is in the vicinity of the nonlinear dielectric (i.e.MQW structure).Curves of the reflective phase and reflectivity varying with the incident optical power of nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity are also calculated. The effect of the number of the DBR periods on the bistability is analyzed.

Large non-biased all-optical bistability in an electroabsorption modulator using p-i-n-i-p diode and asymmetric Fabry–Perot cavity structure

O.-K. Kwon, K. Kim, Kyung-Sook Hyun +3 more

We have constructed a non-biased all-optical bistable device using electroabsorption in multiple quantum wells (MQWs). The device is made of a serial connection of two identical double p-i-n (p-i-n-i-p) diode structures within asymmetric Fabry–Perot (AFP) cavity. This scheme ensures both large internal electric field swing and full exploitation of the light intensity. From the measurement of the diode properties, the non-biased bistability parameters—reflection change of 19%, contrast ratio of 17:1, and bistable loop width of 70%—were obtained.

All-Optical Bistability in Photonic Crystal Resonators based on InGaAsP Quantum-Wells

Myung‐Ki Kim, In-Kag Hwang, Yong-hee Lee

We demonstrate extremely low-power all-optical bistability by using photonic crystal linear resonators based on InGaAsP quantum-wells. Since the photonic crystal cavity has a high quality-factor and a small mode-volume, the photon density in the cavity is extremely high, which makes it possible to reduce the bistable power. The measured minimum bistable threshold power was 37 muW by using a fiber coupling technique, and the estimated nonlinear refractive index (n2) was -6.84times10-14m2/W at a wavelength of 1610.8 nm which is near the resonant wavelength of quantum-well. The low-power optical bistable operations in a single photonic crystal cavity open the possibility of integrated optical devices such as an all-optical memory and switch, based on photonic crystals
