Abstract

We propose a mechanism to explain the emergence of an intermediate gapless spin liquid phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in an externally applied magnetic field, sandwiched between the well-known gapped chiral spin liquid and the gapped partially polarized phase. We propose that, in moderate fields, π-fluxes nucleate in the ground state and trap Majorana zero modes. As these fluxes proliferate with increasing field, the Majorana zero modes overlap creating an emergent $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ quantum Majorana metallic state with a “Fermi surface” at zero energy. We further show that the Majorana spectral function captures the dynamical spin and dimer correlations obtained by the infinite Projected Entangled Pair States method, thereby validating our variational approach. The authors study the formation and characteristics of a Majorana metallic quantum spin liquid state in Kitaev’s honeycomb model under a moderate external magnetic field. This state represents a novel class of gapless quantum spin liquids stabilized by magnetic field.

Classification of gapless Z2 spin liquids in three-dimensional Kitaev models

Kevin M. O'Brien, Maria Hermanns, Simon Trebst

In quantum magnetism, Kitaev's honeycomb model is well known for its gapped and gapless spin liquid ground states in which the elementary spin degrees of freedom fractionalize into Majorana fermions and a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field. In this paper, the authors discuss the gapless spin liquids arising in three-dimensional Kitaev models and show that the gapless Majorana fermions form metallic states which, depending on the underlying lattice structure, exhibit Fermi surfaces, nodal lines, or Weyl points.

Gapless excitations in Kitaev materials with defects

Lucas R. D. Freitas

A quantum spin liquid is a magnetic phase of matter that is remarkable for its ground state long-range entanglement and fractional excitations. A quantum spin liquid appears in the well-known Kitaev honeycomb spin-half model. In a magnetic field, there is a phase transition to a topological phase with an energy gap in the bulk and chiral Majorana fermions at the edge. However, recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments suggest excitations without a gap in this phase, signalled by the cubic temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at low temperatures. In this work, I propose a mechanism to account for this experimental result. I use the localization of chiral Majorana modes in defects to explain the presence of gapless modes in the bulk. Treating the weak interaction between the chiral modes in the defects within a mean-field approximation, I find that these modes remain gapless when the interaction is below a critical value that depends on the magnetic field strength. I used the effective low-energy theory to calculate the spin-lattice relaxation rate and found a behavior that agrees with the experimental result.

Emergent magnetic order in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in a [111] field

Will Holdhusen, Daniel Huerga, Gerardo Ortíz

The Kitaev spin liquid, stabilized as the ground state of the Kitaev honeycomb model, is a paradigmatic example of a topological ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid. The fate of the Kitaev spin liquid in presence of an external magnetic field is at present, a subject of intense scrutiny due to recent experimental signatures pointing to a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological phase in certain materials, as well as theoretical studies predicting the emergence of a quantum spin liquid phase of debated nature. In this work, we employ hierarchical mean-field theory, a method based on the use of clusters preserving relevant symmetries and short-range quantum correlations, to investigate the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev's model in a [111] magnetic field. By using clusters of 24 sites, we predict that the Kitaev spin liquid transits through two intermediate phases, characterized by emerging stripe and chiral orders, respectively, before entering the trivial partially polarized phase, differing from previous studies. We assess our results by performing exact diagonalization and computing the scaling of different observables, including the many-body Chern number and other topological quantities, thus establishing hierarchical mean-field theory as a method to study models of frustrated quantum magnetism potentially hosting topological quantum spin liquids.

Fractionalization signatures in the dynamics of quantum spin liquids

Kang Wang, Shi Feng, Penghao Zhu +4 more

The authors investigate dynamical signatures of fractionalization in the Kitaev honeycomb model under an out-of-plane magnetic field using advanced tensor network methods. By analyzing spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations through the infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS) simulations, they demonstrate distinct spectral features separating Majorana fermions from Z₂ flux excitations in the chiral spin liquid phase. Crucially, they identify the controversial intermediate phase as a gapless Majorana metal driven by strong flux fluctuations, characterized by logarithmic divergence in the low-energy density of states. This resolves a longstanding debate about the regime in question.

Dynamical structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the presence of quenched disorder

Daniel Otten, Ananda Roy, Fabian Hassler

Kitaev's model of spins interacting on a honeycomb lattice describes a quantum spin liquid, where an emergent static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field is coupled to Majorana fermions. In the presence of an external magnetic field and for a range of interaction strengths, the system behaves as a gapped, non-Abelian quantum spin liquid. In this phase, the vortex excitations of the emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field have Majorana zero modes bound to them. Motivated by recent experimental progress in measuring and characterizing real materials that could exhibit spin-liquid behavior, we analytically calculate the dynamical spin structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. In particular, we treat the case of quenched disorder in the vortex configurations. Our calculations reveal a peak in the low-energy dynamical structure factor that is a signature of the spin-liquid behavior. We map the effective Hamiltonian to that of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor by using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Subsequently, we analytically calculate the wave functions of the Majorana zero modes, the energy splitting for finite separation of the vortices and, finally, the dynamical structure factor in presence of quenched disorder.

Three-Dimensional Kitaev Spin Liquids

Kevin M. O'Brien

The formation of quantum spin liquids in frustrated magnets represents an exciting possibility due to the rather exotic features they harbor, including fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. \nUnfortunately, they are notoriously difficult to study as there are often no good analytical methods available and quantum Monte Carlo simulations are hindered by the negative sign problem. \nThe Kitaev honeycomb model is a notable exception of a frustrated quantum model which is exactly solvable and which hosts a number of distinct quantum spin liquid ground states. \nAs such, it allows for a rare opportunity to study the physics of spin liquids with full analytical control. \n \nIn this thesis, we study the fractionalization of spin-1/2 moments into Majorana fermions and an emergent Z2 gauge field in a generalization of the Kitaev honeycomb model to a number of three-dimensional lattices. \nWhile the excitations of the gauge field are always gapped, the fermionic quasiparticles may exhibit a gapless dispersion, forming fully two-dimensional Fermi surfaces, symmetry protected nodal lines, or topological Weyl nodes. \nWe show that one can deduce rather general constraints on the possible gapless excitations by making use of an object called the projective symmetry group. \nIn doing so we provide a scheme for classifying the various gapless Kitaev spin liquids. \nA thorough analysis is carried out for a number of these spin liquids, primarily investigating the stability of the gapless modes and the novel features resulting from their sometimes non-trivial topology, as well as their effects on certain equal-time correlation functions.
