Abstract

Kitaev's model of spins interacting on a honeycomb lattice describes a quantum spin liquid, where an emergent static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field is coupled to Majorana fermions. In the presence of an external magnetic field and for a range of interaction strengths, the system behaves as a gapped, non-Abelian quantum spin liquid. In this phase, the vortex excitations of the emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field have Majorana zero modes bound to them. Motivated by recent experimental progress in measuring and characterizing real materials that could exhibit spin-liquid behavior, we analytically calculate the dynamical spin structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. In particular, we treat the case of quenched disorder in the vortex configurations. Our calculations reveal a peak in the low-energy dynamical structure factor that is a signature of the spin-liquid behavior. We map the effective Hamiltonian to that of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor by using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Subsequently, we analytically calculate the wave functions of the Majorana zero modes, the energy splitting for finite separation of the vortices and, finally, the dynamical structure factor in presence of quenched disorder.

Spectroscopy of Majorana modes of non-Abelian vortices in Kitaev's chiral spin liquid

Masafumi Udagawa, Roderich Moessner

We study the temperature (T) dependence of the dynamical structure factor of the chiral spin liquid phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model. We find, using a recently developed analytical approach, direct signatures of the Majorana modes associated with the non-Abelian Z_2 vortices (visons). In particular, a characteristic multiplet of discrete peaks at low but nonzero-T and its field dependence reflect the existence of thermally activated visons whose varying separation yields different splittings of the Majorana `zero' modes. The resonant processes involved are specific to the Majorana modes, and will persist even in the presence of weak non-integrable interactions.

Gapless excitations in Kitaev materials with defects

Lucas R. D. Freitas

A quantum spin liquid is a magnetic phase of matter that is remarkable for its ground state long-range entanglement and fractional excitations. A quantum spin liquid appears in the well-known Kitaev honeycomb spin-half model. In a magnetic field, there is a phase transition to a topological phase with an energy gap in the bulk and chiral Majorana fermions at the edge. However, recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments suggest excitations without a gap in this phase, signalled by the cubic temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at low temperatures. In this work, I propose a mechanism to account for this experimental result. I use the localization of chiral Majorana modes in defects to explain the presence of gapless modes in the bulk. Treating the weak interaction between the chiral modes in the defects within a mean-field approximation, I find that these modes remain gapless when the interaction is below a critical value that depends on the magnetic field strength. I used the effective low-energy theory to calculate the spin-lattice relaxation rate and found a behavior that agrees with the experimental result.

Exact chiral-spin-liquid state in a Kitaev-type spin model

Jianlong Fu

We study a frustrated two-dimensional lattice spin model with Kitaev-type interaction. The lattice is obtained from the honeycomb lattice by replacing half of its sites with triangles. Using the SO(3) Majorana representation of spin, the model is exactly mapped into a ${Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory of complex fermions with standard Gauss law constraint. We show that the ground state of the model is a chiral spin liquid, and it has gapless excitations. The Chern number of the ground state is $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, implying the existence of a chiral edge mode. The vortex excitation of the model is bound with a Majorana zero mode, such mode behaves as non-Abelian anyons.

Quasiparticle Signatures in Quantum Spin Liquids

We provide a complete and exact theoretical study of the dynamical structure factor of a twodimensional quantum spin liquid in gapless and gapped phases, as realized in Kitaev's honeycomb model. We show that there are direct signatures-qualitative and quantitative-of the Majorana fermions and gauge fluxes emerging in this model. These include counterintuitive manifestations of quantum number fractionalization, such as a neutron scattering response with a gap even in the presence of gapless excitations, and a sharp component despite the fractionalization of electron spin. Our analysis identifies new varieties of the venerable x-ray edge problem and explores connections to the physics of quantum quenches.

Dynamical response theory of interacting Majorana fermions and its application to generic Kitaev quantum spin liquids in a field

Peng Rao, Roderich Moessner, Johannes Knolle

Motivated by the appearance of Majorana fermions in a broad range of correlated and topological electronic systems, we develop a general method to compute the dynamical response of interacting Majorana fermions in the random-phase approximation (RPA). This can be applied self-consistently on top of Majorana mean-field theory backgrounds, thereby in particular providing a powerful tool to analyze behavior in the vicinity of (various heavily studied) exactly soluble models. Prime examples are quantum spin liquids (QSL) with emergent Majorana excitations, with the celebrated exact solution of Kitaev. We employ the RPA to study in considerable detail phase structure and dynamics of the extended Kitaev honeycomb K J Γ model, with and without an applied field. First, we benchmark our method with Kitaev's exactly soluble model, finding a remarkable agreement. The interactions between Majorana fermions even turn out to mimic the effect of local Z 2 flux excitations, which we explain analytically. Second, we show how small non-Kitaev couplings J and Γ induce Majorana bound states, resulting in sharp features in the dynamical structure factor in the presence of fractionalization: such “spinon excitons” naturally appear, and can coexist and interact with the broad Majorana continuum. Third, for increasing couplings or field, our theory predicts instabilities of the Kitaev QSL (KQSL) triggered by the condensation of the sharp modes. From the high-symmetry momenta of the condensation we can deduce which magnetically ordered phases surround the KQSL, in good agreement with previous finite-size numerics. We discuss implications for experiments and the broad range of applicability of our method to other QSL and Majorana systems.

Unpaired Majorana modes in the gapped phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model

Olga Petrova, Paula Mellado, Oleg Tchernyshyov

We study the gapped phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model (a ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid) in the presence of lattice defects. We find that some dislocations and bond defects carry unpaired Majorana fermions. Physical excitations associated with these defects are (complex) fermion modes made out of two (real) Majorana fermions connected by a ${Z}_{2}$ gauge string. The quantum state of these modes is robust against local noise and can be changed by winding a ${Z}_{2}$ vortex around a dislocation. The exact solution respects gauge invariance and reveals a crucial role of the gauge field in the physics of Majorana modes.
