Abstract

Local relevant deformations are important tool to study universal properties of quantum critical points. We investigate the effect of small relevant deformations on the bi-partite entanglement entropy at the quantum critical points. Within the quantum critical region, a universal power-law correction in the entanglement entropy induced by the relevant operator is found in both one- and two-dimensional critical lattice models. The exponent of the power-law correction term is determined by the scaling dimension of the relevant operator. Based on numerical simulations and scaling theory argument, it is conjectured that such a universal power-law correction in the entanglement entropy is universal for Lorentz invariant quantum critical points. Without Lorentz invariance, it is found the exponent in the power-law correction term does not fit in with the scaling argument in models with a dynamical exponent z=2 in two dimension. This may be because the relevant operator added in the lattice model corresponds to complicated operators in the corresponding conformal field theory. Our study provides a different perspective to extract universal information of quantum critical points. We expect it would be useful to detect unique properties of topological quantum phase transitions.

Unusual corrections to scaling and convergence of universal Renyi properties at quantum critical points

Sharmistha Sahoo, Edwin Miles Stoudenmire, Jean-Marie Stéphan +3 more

At a quantum critical point, bipartite entanglement entropies have universal quantities which are subleading to the ubiquitous area law. For Renyi entropies, these terms are known to be similar to the von Neumann entropy, while being much more amenable to numerical and even experimental measurement. We show here that when calculating universal properties of Renyi entropies, it is important to account for unusual corrections to scaling that arise from relevant local operators present at the conical singularity in the multisheeted Riemann surface. These corrections grow in importance with increasing Renyi index. We present studies of Renyi correlation functions in the $1+1$ transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) using conformal field theory, mapping to free fermions, and series expansions, and the logarithmic entropy singularity at a corner in $2+1$ for both free bosonic field theory and the TFIM, using numerical linked cluster expansions. In all numerical studies, accurate results are only obtained when unusual corrections to scaling are taken into account. In the worst case, an analysis ignoring these corrections can get qualitatively incorrect answers, such as predicting a decrease in critical exponents with the Renyi index, when they are actually increasing. We discuss a two-step extrapolation procedure that can be used to account for the unusual corrections to scaling.

Universal entanglement entropy in two-dimensional conformal quantum critical points

Benjamin Hsu, Michael Mulligan, Eduardo Fradkin +1 more

We study the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of two-dimensional conformal quantum critical systems, i.e., systems with scale-invariant wave functions. They include two-dimensional generalized quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices and quantum loop models, as well as the quantum Lifshitz model and related gauge theories. We show that under quite general conditions, the entanglement entropy of a large and simply connected subsystem of an infinite system with a smooth boundary has a universal finite contribution, as well as scale-invariant terms for special geometries. The universal finite contribution to the entanglement entropy is computable in terms of the properties of the conformal structure of the wave function of these quantum critical systems. The calculation of the universal term reduces to a problem in boundary conformal field theory

Entanglement entropy of singular surfaces under relevant deformations in holography

Mostafa Ghasemi, Shahrokh Parvizi

In the vacuum state of a CFT, the entanglement entropy of singular surfaces contains a logarithmic universal term which is only due to the singularity of the entangling surface. We consider the relevant perturbation of a three dimensional CFT for singular entangling surface. We observe that in addition to the universal term due to the entangling surface, there is a new logarithmic term which corresponds to a relevant perturbation of the conformal field theory with a coefficient depending on the scaling dimension of the relevant operator. We also find a new power law divergence in the holographic entanglement entropy. In addition, we study the effect of a relevant perturbation in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity for a singular entangling surface. Again a logarithmic term shows up. This new term is proportional to both the dimension of the relevant operator and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also introduce the renormalized entanglement entropy for a kink region which in the UV limit reduces to a universal positive finite term.

Relevant perturbation of entanglement entropy of singular surfaces

Mostafa Ghasemi, Shahrokh Parvizi

We study the entanglement entropy of theories that are derived from relevant perturbation of given CFTs for regions with a singular boundary by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the smooth case, it is well known that a relevant deformation of the boundary theory by the relevant operator with scaling dimension $Δ=\frac{d+2}{2}$ generates a logarithmic universal term to the entanglement entropy. As the smooth case, when the boundary CFT deformed by a relevant operator, we find that the entanglement entropy of singular surface also contains a new logarithmic term which is due to relevant perturbation of the conformal field theory, and depends on the scaling dimension of relevant operator. We also find for extended singular surfaces, $c_{n}\times R^{m}$, as well as logarithmic term, the new universal double logarithmic terms may appear depending on the scaling dimension of relevant operator and spacetime dimensions. These new terms are due to relevant perturbation of the boundary theory.

Topological Order and Quantum Criticality

Claudio Castelnovo, Simon Trebst, Matthias Troyer

In this chapter we discuss aspects of the quantum critical behavior that occurs at a quantum phase transition separating a topological phase from a conventionally ordered one. We concentrate on a family of quantum lattice models, namely certain deformations of the toric code model, that exhibit continuous quantum phase transitions. One such deformation leads to a Lorentz-invariant transition in the 3D Ising universality class. An alternative deformation gives rise to a so-called conformal quantum critical point where equal-time correlations become conformally invariant and can be related to those of the 2D Ising model. We study the behavior of several physical observables, such as non-local operators and entanglement entropies, that can be used to characterize these quantum phase transitions. Finally, we briefly consider the role of thermal fluctuations and related phase transitions, before closing with a short overview of field theoretical descriptions of these quantum critical points.

Volume Law and Quantum Criticality in the Entanglement Entropy of Excited Eigenstates of the Quantum Ising Model

Lev Vidmar, Lucas Hackl, Eugenio Bianchi A +1 more

Much has been learned about universal properties of entanglement entropies in ground states of quantum many-body lattice systems. Here we unveil universal properties of the average bipartite entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the paradigmatic quantum Ising model in one dimension. The leading term exhibits a volume-law scaling that we argue is universal for translationally invariant quadratic models. The subleading term is constant at the critical field for the quantum phase transition and vanishes otherwise (in the thermodynamic limit); i.e., the critical field can be identified from subleading corrections to the average (over all eigenstates) entanglement entropy.
