Abstract

We study the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of two-dimensional conformal quantum critical systems, i.e., systems with scale-invariant wave functions. They include two-dimensional generalized quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices and quantum loop models, as well as the quantum Lifshitz model and related gauge theories. We show that under quite general conditions, the entanglement entropy of a large and simply connected subsystem of an infinite system with a smooth boundary has a universal finite contribution, as well as scale-invariant terms for special geometries. The universal finite contribution to the entanglement entropy is computable in terms of the properties of the conformal structure of the wave function of these quantum critical systems. The calculation of the universal term reduces to a problem in boundary conformal field theory

Universal behavior of entanglement in 2D quantum critical dimer models

Benjamin Hsu, Eduardo Fradkin

We examine the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy for the 2D quantum dimer model (QDM) at criticality and derive the universal finite sub-leading correction $γ_{QCP}$. We compute the value of $γ_{QCP}$ without approximation working directly with the wave function of a generalized 2D QDM at the Rokhsar-Kivelson QCP in the continuum limit. Using the replica approach, we construct the conformal boundary state corresponding to the cyclic identification of $n$-copies along the boundary of the observed region. We find that the universal finite term is $γ_{QCP}=\ln R-1/2$ where $R$ is the compactification radius of the bose field theory quantum Lifshitz model, the effective field theory of the 2D QDM at quantum criticality. We also demonstrated that the entanglement spectrum of the critical wave function on a large but finite region is described by the characters of the underlying conformal field theory. It is shown that this is formally related to the problems of quantum Brownian motion on $n$-dimensional lattices or equivalently a system of strings interacting with a brane containing a background electromagnetic field and can be written as an expectation value of a vertex operator.

Entanglement Entropy of 2D Conformal Quantum Critical Points: Hearing the Shape of a Quantum Drum

Eduardo Fradkin, Joel E. Moore

The entanglement entropy of a pure quantum state of a bipartite system A union or logical sumB is defined as the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over one of the two parts. In one dimension, the entanglement of critical ground states diverges logarithmically in the subsystem size, with a universal coefficient that for conformally invariant critical points is related to the central charge of the conformal field theory. We find that the entanglement entropy of a standard class of z=2 conformal quantum critical points in two spatial dimensions, in addition to a nonuniversal "area law" contribution linear in the size of the AB boundary, generically has a universal logarithmically divergent correction, which is completely determined by the geometry of the partition and by the central charge of the field theory that describes the critical wave function.

Scaling of entanglement entropy at 2D quantum Lifshitz fixed points and topological fluids

Eduardo Fradkin

The entanglement entropy of a pure quantum state of a bipartite system is defined as the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over one of the two parts. Critical ground states of local Hamiltonians in one dimension have an entanglement entropy that diverges logarithmically in the subsystem size, with a universal coefficient that is is related to the central charge of the associated conformal field theory. Here I will discuss recent extensions of these ideas to a class of quantum critical points with dynamic critical exponent z = 2 in two space dimensions and to 2D systems in a topological phase. The application of these ideas to quantum dimer models and fractional quantum Hall states will be discussed.

Scaling of entanglement in 2 + 1-dimensional scale-invariant field theories

Xiao Chen, Gil Young Cho, Thomas Faulkner +1 more

We study the universal scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of critical theories in 2 + 1 dimensions. We specially consider two fermionic scale-invariant models, free massless Dirac fermions and a model of fermions with quadratic band touching, and numerically study the two-cylinder entanglement entropy of the models on the torus. We find that in both cases the entanglement entropy satisfies the area law and has the subleading term which is a scaling function of the aspect ratios of the cylindrical regions. We test the scaling of entanglement in both the free fermion models using three possible scaling functions for the subleading term derived from (a) the quasi-1D conformal field theory, (b) the bosonic quantum Lifshitz model and (c) the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence. For the later case we construct an analytic scaling function using holography, appropriate for critical theories with a gravitational dual description. We find that the subleading term in the fermionic models is well described, for a range of aspect ratios, by the scaling form derived from the quantum Lifshitz model as well as that derived using the AdS/CFT correspondence (in this case only for the Dirac model). For the case where the fermionic models are placed on a square torus we find the fit to the different scaling forms is in agreement to surprisingly high precision.

Corner contribution to the entanglement entropy of anO(3) quantum critical point in 2 + 1 dimensions

A B Kallin, E M Stoudenmire, Paul Fendley +2 more

The entanglement entropy for a quantum critical system across a boundary with a corner exhibits a subleading logarithmic scaling term with a scale-invariant coefficient. Using a Numerical Linked Cluster Expansion, we calculate this universal quantity for a square-lattice bilayer Heisenberg model at its quantum critical point. We find, for this 2 + 1 dimensional O (3) universality class, that it is thrice the value calculated previously for the Ising universality class. This relation gives substantial evidence that this coefficient provides a measure of the number of degrees of freedom of the theory, analogous to the central charge in a 1 + 1 dimensional conformal field theory.

Boundary Conformal Field Theory and Entanglement Entropy in Two-Dimensional Quantum Lifshitz Critical Point

Oshikawa Masaki

I discuss the von Neumann entanglement entropy in two-dimensional quantum Lifshitz criical point, namely in Rokhsar-Kivelson type critical wavefunctions. I follow the approach proposed by B. Hsu et al. [Phys. Rev. B 79, 115421 (2009)], but point out a subtle problem concerning compactification of replica boson fields: although one can define a set of new boson fields by linear combinations of the original fields, the new fields are not compactified independently. In order to systematically study boundary conformal field theory of multicomponent free bosons, I employ a geometric formulation based on compactification lattices. The result from the boundary conformal field theory agrees exactly with alternative calculations by J.-M. Stephan et al. [Phys. Rev. B 80, 184421 (2009)], confirming its universality as argued originally by B. Hsu et al.
